I'm about midway through mine, but I have no idea about the other writers? Not sure if a deadline would hurt or help them at the moment...

I'm about a quarter-third of the way through mine. For me personally a deadline would definately help me put my nose to the grindstone, but I'll go with the majority.

The thing is currently over 3,500 words, so I'm also wondering if I shouldn't do maybe two or three posts, and if so, when to post the first part.

I think my response is ready to go. I?ll probably post it in three segments, the first this Friday morning. I can space out the other two based on whatever deadline is decided.

I think that if there are to be judges, then there should be criteria of scoring, simplistic or otherwise.

    Done, already? [face_worried]

    How was scoring done previously?

Yeah, the Muse struck and the words poured out like literary diarrhea.

That might not be the best analogy.

Anyway, I looked back a bit and frankly I didn't see anything.

I think that we'd typically be so laid back with our 'challenges' that the winner was everyone who posted something. :p

The only criteria I can even think up (to keep from being too Lit-esque) would be "Enjoyability". ;)

Oh, and since we allow shameless plugging of our work here, I'm posting a link to my now-finished Ultimate Drabble Challenge Version 3. (Speaking of just finishing being a challenge)

Way back in the day we had a pretty hardcore scoring system, with a special rubric, and Skalen would take the aggregate scores from the individual judges and average them to find the winner...at which point he'd dispense the nifty little GWG challenge ribbons somebody made.

I can dig the rubric out if that's what everybody really wants to do. We stopped using it once the GWG quieted down a bit and people (read: me) got lazy; challenges just became a thing where you got an A for participation [face_laugh]

I really wish I had more time to write. The old way was great I loved it. Pretty ladies for judges, and shinny ribbons at the end... Oh the memories.

Hey, before I start reading, can someone please tell me in detail what I have to judge these pieces on, and then what I'm supposed to do with those results?

    I'll suggest a simple option:

Score from 1-10 according to enjoyment level of the fic (10 - highest).

Now perhaps someone can add something more substantive to that notion? :p

Here's the GWG judging rubric that was used for several years:

So, a judged entry would look like this:

Title: The Man Who Can't Finish Anything
    Author: Exeter
    Overall creativity: 5
    Writing Ability: 7
    Grammar/Mechanics: 7
    Guidelines: 0
    Scale of 1-10: 6
    Total x2: 50%
Comments: It was an okay start, but you lost me with the architectural lingo. It may have helped if your challenge entry didn't suddenly stop halfway through with a promise to "update soon!!". Also, I'm pretty sure you stole (half) the plot from Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels.

What we'd normally do is have the individual judges PM their scores to the GWG staff (Skalen) and after the judging period was over (usually about a week after the deadline, to give the judges the same courtesy as the writers) he would determine the winners and post the results in a single post.

I always thought it worked well and it seemed like a well-rounded, fair system for judging. Since Skalen can't be around as much these days, if everybody wants to use the rubric I can collect & post the judging results.

Since there seems to be a bit of an upswing in the GWG lately, I think I'll dig up lazy's challenge index and update it so some of our new members can check out our past challenges. There's been some real skill here in the past, so I'm looking forward to seeing that continue.

Yeah, once there's a deadline (or everybody who wants to participate has), I'll go back and gather up all the links for the judges.

Awesome idea, Exeter. I knew there was a reason we keep you around. Well, plus we're all dying for you to finish your stuff.

How far along is everyone? Would a deadline help? Oct. 31st maybe?

I've posted Part 2 of my response, The Siren's Call.

I'll post the third and final part sometime mid-late next week.

10/31 sounds like a good deadline. I've been away a lot. Yeesh, life keeps beating me down. Just had to take on a second job so my time is severely limited to a few hours each weekend of 'interneting'. I'm still willing to be a judge. Good luck to all the participants. :)

Well, it took some real digging around, but I managed to get the challenge index finished. In the future, we can just link back to this post which I'll keep updating from time to time. Let me know if you see any mistakes.

I also came across a couple of possible ideas for new challenges that were suggested but either didn't get used or had no any entries, so maybe we go back to semi-regular GWG challenges.

As for this month's challenge straight from the brain of corellian_ale:

Hopefully we can get a few more entries for the challenge. I think BigE's ego deserves some healthy competition (being judged numero uno by default is a little like the Lions finally earning their place in the NFL record book for the 2008-2009 season...by breaking the record for losses in a single season). I might try to get something going for the challenge, though it'll be ineligible on account of the fact that I'll be handling the results (and we all know how amoral I am).

It's really great to see some life around here again.
