    The Great Rivalry

    Genre: Au
    Time Period: OT (During ANH)
Summary: For longer than the Jedi Order existed, baseball has been the Galactic Pastime. Now for the first time, the story of baseball during the Rebellion.
Characters: Everybody that's ever appeared in the OT or Zahn's novels, just about. Plus Jar-Jar Binks and Watto. Some present day players might make cameos.

The Galaxy is entering its eighteenth year of civil war. Rebel ships, striking from a hidden base, have stolen the secret plans to the evil Galactic Empire's new battlestation, the DEATH STAR.

Princess Leia's mission to bring the plans safely to her home planet of Alderaan along with Jedi General Obi-wan Kenobi has failed. Before her capture, however, she managed to hide the plans in a droid and send it to fulfill her mission.

This is not that story. This is the story of something almost as vital to the survival of the Rebellion. Princess Leia also hid the contract for a great right-hander with the plans and the window to sign him is closing fast . . .

    Chapter One: Hot Stove

After the celebrations in honor of the Alliance's three newest heros had died down, General Dodanna called them, plus Princess Leia and the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO into his office.

"You wanted to see us, General?" Han Solo asked the venerable commander.

"Yes I did," Dodanna replied in his gravely voice. "Lost amid all the confusion is this: Princess Leia never made it to her other assignment."

"What other assignment?" Luke Skywalker asked.

Leia almost paled. "Artoo's carrying the contract the Alliance has for J. J. Binks and time is short."

"The Alliance hires mercenaries?" Luke asked, very surprised.

"No," Dodanna said. "Binks is a right-handed pitcher--the best of his generation. Our pennant hope rest on him, that is, if he signs."

Chewbacca barked something that 3PO translated as: "So we've got to deliver his contract?"

    Dodanna and Leia nodded.

"What happens if we don't?" Luke said.

"Then it's a bidding war with the Empire. You know the outcome of that," the General said. "Dismissed."

Han and Chewie went to prep the Falcon while Luke helped clean up after the party. The Alliance recycled everything. Some of the banners, Luke saw, were at least several years old. One read "Happy Birthday Yoda" and Luke wondered who Yoda was.

After that was done, on a lark he went to the baseball field. A few piolts were practising their hitting. Wedge Antilles was batting. While Wes Janson through BP.

"Hey, Wes!" Luke called. "Mind if I pitch for a while?"

Wes grinned. "Sure Luke. I've been waiting forever to hit."

Luke pulled on a nerf-skin glove and took the ball from Wes. The other guys didn't know that Luke had pitched for Anchorhead in the Tattooine League, an amateur league, somewhat succesfully until Sand People masacred a small crowd near Mos Espa and the league folded.

Luke came to the set position on the mound. He dropped his left foot back a couple of inches, turned his right foot out perpandicular to the rubber, raised his left leg up (bent at the knee), pointed it towards Third, brought his glove down to leg-level, extended his left leg out in front and took the ball out of his glove at the same time, and threw. He did it all in about three seconds.

Luke let his legs do the real work. He fired a ninety-eight mile-per-hour fastball over the plate with late movement. Wedge swung right through it.

From somewhere close to the Temple a ringing voice cried out: "There's our future ace!"
