Coipel's art is really pretty though, so there's that saving grace.

Oh come on, we can both agree that great art can turn a decent comic into a good one, and vice versa. Look at New Avengers for example, overall the story isn't BAD, but Yu's art just sinks that title in my eyes. It's painful to look at, at times.

A personal example of this was the "Countdown: Arena" mini-series. The story may not have been "stellar", but it still could've been fun... if the book didn't have a HORRID artist behind it. (It's like Scott McDaniel decided to rip off Frank Miller's art from "Dark Knight Strikes Back", and hit that style a few times with the ugly stick.)

What bothers me more than poor art is inconsistent art. I can adjust to ugly art most of the time, but in this day and age where most superheroics are being "written to the trade," having fill-in artists (or just a bunch of different artists) on one story arc is nigh inexcusable. It's almost okay if the two artists have a similar style, but if you look, for instance, at X-Men: Poptopia, the artist jumped from Ian Churchill to Sean Phillips, which is an amazingly off-putting transition.

Art can't save a terrible story or doom a great story. But it can make a great story a decent story. Or make a terrible story worth reading. Or turn a mediocre story into something that is worth picking up for all the eye candy. Hush is a perfect example of the latter.

In cases like Ultimates 3, where terrible art and terrible story meet, something truly special happens.

Anyone pick up Millar's "Kick-Ass"? I've been hearing mixed reviews on that one and am wondering what people here thought of it.

Obligatory Soontir "MILLAR IS BAD RARRGH" comment.

After reading the first issue of Millar's run on FF, I thank YOU very much for taking the words out of my mouth. :p

I was underwhelmed actually by FF. Granted, it wasn't bad but it wasn't anything special either. And the Human Torch as a male Paris Hilton annoyed me. Hitch's art was very nice though, if slightly looser than normal. Overall, it was just...there. For all the hype it got, it was disappointing I suppose.

Why is JSA always so consistently good? It is like sweet mana dropped from heaven. Only with Ted Grant punching things.

On the art situation, bad art does impact on my enjoyment of a story. If the art is really bad I won't even bother buying the issue even if its a book I usually pick up.

And Marvel drops the ball again. The Big Event of Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men, which is not coming out for another month (but was scheduled for this month, before which is was, IIRC, scheduled for January), is spoiled in this week's Uncanny X-Men #496. What the crap is that all about?

From what I can tell of it, it doesn't seem to give concrete details as to what happened. But still, it does generally tell that something big happened.
