Old enough to die after falling down some stairs. Probably could have used a bio mechanical handrail of some sort.

seems like the last three high and medium-profile deaths ive heard of where "from a fall". obama's probably got drones bumping into old people on his personal hitlist or something

it is funny how quickly we can hear about celebrideath in the internet age, tho. i wonder how soon after my inevitable untimely demise someone will have posted a thread. or a post in teh catchall death thread, as the case may be

Rest in peace, H.R. Giger. You helped to define one of the films that still immensely inspires me to this day. I'm not sure if my love for film would have been the same without you.

i wonder if he appreciates that the larger body of his work was overshadowed in the popular imagination by concept art work he did for a scifi film? that his entire core aesthetic as an artist has effectively been co-opted by a film and comic book franchise as a result. he seems like he might have been all alec guinness-ey about it

    Sad news.

Great little story about him about a minute and thirty seconds into this by Dan O'Bannon.

The sci fi film pretty much took his regular art and adapted it to define their aesthetic, no?

oh yeah and obvi he was okay with it at the time but im just saying it might be one of those situations like with alec guinness coming to regret doing star wars after the fact because the obi-wan role kind of overshadowed the more serious aspects of his acting career

seems like giger's biomechanical aesthetic could have had more currency in the art world if he hadnt effectively signed it away to 20th century fox or whoever owns the alien franchise

im probably just talking out of my ass, tho

Alan Dean Foster dedicated the Aliens novelisation to him: "To HR Giger. Who teaches us more about ourselves than we wish to know. From ADF and points west." Says it all.

Wow, it's really weird for me because I finally got around to seeing Jodorowsky's Dune last night. Of course, his strange and often disturbing art is all through that. As well as his equally strange presence. Would anyone but Giger say that the first time he saw Magma in concert he felt like "Christ on the cross?" And mean it as a compliment?

Certainly, he was no less than a visionary by any reasonable standard. Regrets and all that, though he certainly wouldn't like anyone getting teary or anything.

    Sad day. RIP

Been wanting a tattoo of one of his works for a while. Not yet willing to take the risk with local artist.

Just be glad he work was overshadowed by Alien and not by the giant microphone stand he built the singer from KoRn, Rogue_Ten

So sad to read this news during the early hours of the morning.

As you grow older, more and more of your childhood hero's pass away...

I know you'll edit, yet I can't resist... is that a version of Creole Art?
