Yeah, 10 of the 13 Dwarves survive the Hobbit. Of those survivors:

Oin was killed by the Watcher in the Water.
Balin was killed by Orcs inside Moria.
And Ori was one of the last Dwarves to be killed when the Orcs invaded Balin's tomb.

Rather depressing. But I guess it's fortunate that 7 of them are still alive during Frodo's quest. They also likely participated in the battles when Sauron's forces invaded Erebor.

Most likely. After all, Dain II fought during the War as well and so did Bard's grandson Brand; they both died before Erebor's gates. Kind of ironic.

Edit: I have the book and just skimmed through it; correct me if I'm wrong, but Bard doesn't appear until near the end after Smaug is slain and his son and heir Bain (father of King Brand) isn't even mentioned. Wonder why PJ decided to put them in the films - not that I'm complaining; it at least opens the possibility that events described in the Appendix could have been occuring unseen in LOTR despite Jackson's changes to the story.

No, Bard appears briefly in the book before the Dwarves head off to Erebor. But it's more like a "o hai, im Bard, cya guys" kind of thing.

Bombur (who "has grown so fat it takes six dwarves to lift him to the dinner") doing another barrel roll would have been a sight to see.

I'm starting another hearing of the LOTR audiobook and just now picked up the three dwarves who arrive to Bag End before Bilbo's birthday and travel to Rivendell with him. Who were they? Bofur, Bifur, Nori, Dori, Dwalin, Gloin? (Another sad thought: Besides the Bifur/Bofur/Bombur-family all the other dwarves of Bilbo's group have died or lost a brother before LOTR.)

Bard is the one who kills Smaug,

In the movies, his character gets expanded

I wasn't the biggest fan of the love triangle subplot, but the rest of the film was breathlessly paced, and thematically involving as well, not to mention pulling off perhaps the greatest dragon in film history.

    My full review is here.

Once TABA gets released, the Hobbit Trilogy will surpass the SW Saga

Yup, I said it, what ya gonna do?

Good lord you really don't pay attention during movies. Between you and the Will Smith fan this forum's IQ has dropped about 100 points.

Me too! I think Beorn may help Gandalf escape - there was a LEGO set called "Dol Guldur Ambush" featuring Beorn. Then Gandalf gets the White Council to finally attack, and the Necromancer will be more vulnerable to attack because he will have sent off all the Orcs to Erebor. The battle will end with the Necromancer fleeing, and the movie will end with the reconstruction of Barad-dur.

    Just my personal theory.

Most definitely, Battle of Five Armies and White Council attacking Dol Guldur? I am so down for that

Hope we actually see Mordor when Sauron gets defeated in TABA

Plus Sauron vs Gandalf was uploaded on Youtube
