Billy Connolly was easily the best thing about TBOTFA.

I like his scene with Thorin, where cgi orcs keep covering up the screen to hide the animators' shame (Thorin was mostly cg in that scene as well)

From what I've read, both of these are true. I read the Silmarilliom and many other of Tolkien's LotR-based books, and I usually get the distinct impression he never finished his work.

The Blue Wizards, Allatar and Pallando, did exist, although I've never read much about them.

Yeah. I've heard that Tolkien considered the possibility of writing a sequel to Lord of the Rings, but abandoned the project because he kept running into the same question over and over. How do you top Lord of the Rings? You don't.

That's true. Whenever I try to write a sequel for my own amusement, I always quit simply because I don't think I'd like any continuation of the story that wouldn't adversely affect LotR.

Still, it'd be cool to know what happened in the Far East during the war.

His ideas were really depressing, too. The children of Men, boys aspiring to be orcs, forming dark cults and stuff while society crumbles.

Not know of their existence? I don't know.
Not know of their exploits? Tolkien never did say much.

Having only seen the Middle-earth movies, and not having read any of the books, I haven't heard of Pallandro and Allatar before now. *Hangs head in shame*. But in just reading up about them now, apparently it's actually "Pallando and Alatar".

We only know that there were 5 wizards sent to Middle Earth - Alatar, Saruman, Gandalf, Radagast and Pallandro. Alatar and Pallandro journeyed east with Saruman, and never returned.

Their names aren't in the films, but they do get a mention in AUJ. And their names are fuzzy, anyway, since Tolkien gave them at least two sets and never got them into the main body of his work.

Yeah, I saw that in the information I read online yesterday. Apparently Jackson didn't have the rights to use their actual names, so in AUJ they just have Gandalf refer to the blue wizards (which I do recall now thinking back).

Didn't they have to CGI him up due to his Parkinson's?

He specifically said that he forgot their names, which I sort have to wonder at when there are only five wizards in the entire world.

Basically. A cute way of dancing around copyright issues. IU one can just argue that Gandalf can't remember their names because he hasn't seen them in thousands of years or something.
