LOL, a 53 minute scene on Bilbo packing? oh boy that is definitely fake even though i haven't seen the movie yet
Well I saw this and needless to say will be seeing it again either today or in the coming week. It's that good. As far as if it's as good as the LOTR trilogy, still too early for me to say. Just great fun all around, and it's a really great movie to wrap up a year of some really great movies. I don't remember that part in the book, and I'm assuming it was in the appendices? Also will the one-armed orc appear in the next two movies? Sorry the last time I read The Hobbit was in 4th grade when FOTR just came out in theaters.

You people are silly, and I like you. I'm busy composing my next "individuated dwarf" post, which is really more about the book than the film, but in the meantime I thought I'd post my wife's views on the movie. She posted this on FB this morning: Went to see the Hobbit midnight opening showing last night. It was the most spectacular film I have ever seen, especially in the new XD 3D. That is all I will say so as not to give anything away! It took a little while to get used to the crispness of the picture... it was like someone took the misty veil of the movie world and lifted it up, to reveal the crisp colors underneath. It was like getting a new pair of glasses... all movies you've ever seen seem misty and blurry in comparison! But then, I got used to it, and I was fully immersed!There is a reason I love this woman.
Saw it last night. It looked a little cartoony or something. And 48 fps or whatever is garbo. I don't understand why they would do that. I'll be seeing it again, though.

I thought "too cartoony" was a problem with the 24fps as well. I'd like to see HFR 3D to compare though.
Gandalf's make up looked terrible in my opinion. I got a way cartoon feeling from that. Same with older Bilbo.

To expound a bit on the HFR 3D, it offers a level of realism and immediacy that's absent from film projected at the standard frame rate. The look reminds me of the BBC "films" of the 70s and 80s, EG Count Dracula (with Louis Jourdan) and Pride & Prejudice (with Colin Firth), which were shot on video at higher frame rates than film, and have that same ultra-real look. It's a bit like looking into another world, in which the people move normally instead of with that blurry motion we're all used to, associated with normal film projection. It took a bit of getting used to, but after a while it seemed perfectly normal and natural, till I wasn't even aware of it anymore.
