Without the Holiday Special, there is no way that we'd know Chewbacca had a wife named Mala, a white-haired father named Itchy, and a cute little son named Lumpy.

Did you enjoy this look into what may be a typical family life for Wookiees?

Personally, I enjoyed it. I never had thought that Chewbacca had a family prior to this. All those times he went on daring missions with Han, he probably was thinking about his family, and he may have argued with Han over whether or not they should take certain assignments. After all, Chewbacca wants to return to his family, and Han has no family (that I know of) to return to. Therefore, Han would probably be more willing to take daring assignements than Chewbacca.

Is Chewbacca a bad father? It seems like he is away for long periods of time, leaving Mala and Itchy to run the household, and leaving them to raise Lumpy. Sure, it looks like Lumpy is a happy little Wookiee when Chewbacca finally returns, but I can't help but think he has a feeling of disappointment that his father is rarely around.

I did like the Holiday Special too.

More info about it: The Star Wars Holiday Special is a 2-hour long television special that aired on CBS on November 17, 1978. It starred all of the original cast of Star Wars except for Alec Guinness. Excluding commercials, the program ran about 90 minutes.
The entire show is live-action, but there is an 11 minute animated segment, that is most popular as Boba Fett's first appearance in the Star Wars universe.
George Lucas wrote the story for the program, but because of preparations for Empire Strikes Back he had hardly any further involvement.
The program is about Chewbacca trying to fly home to his family on Kashyyyk. His family consists of his father, wife, and son. The show also has several special guest and musical appearances including the Jefferson Starship, Diahann Carroll, Bea Arthur, Art Carney, and Harvey Korman.

I'm sure if they could have afforded Sir Alec's fee, we'd all now be fawning over his remarkable breakdancing skills.

I wanted this thread to discuss Chewbacca's family life, and not just the Holiday Special in general. :(

Oke then lets do that, and i will make later one tread were we can discuss the Holiday Special in general.

I found Lumpy a bit annoying from time to time. It was good to see Itchy, altough i believe they changed him being albino in other eusources. And Malla seemed tto me like a great wife for Chewie.

Was it just me or did Ichy have too much of an attraction to non-wookiee females? He seemed to get a little too excited about that dancer. :p

I agree, he was something of a pervert. I wonder if he ever looked under Chewie's bed.

You know, Lumpy is a character in one of the Black Fleet Crisis EU novels. I think they talk about his upbringing as a Wookie warrior, and goes into the coming of age rituals of Wookie youth, etc. I don't really remember it to well, but you might want to check it out... The novel also talked about Cindel Towani (another SW small screen icon... Kube McDowell loved the stuff, I guess...).

Does the EU give any sort of information on how old Lumpy is? Since Chewbacca is supposedly 300 or so, I'm curious as to how old his son is. Same thing with Itchy, does the EU state how old he is?

I'm not sure if Itchy's age is ever specified in any of the EU sources.

The Holiday Special provided background and introduced characters that would prove to be some of the best in SWEU, in my huble opinion. I really enjoyed AC Crispen's Han Solo Trilogy, expecially the scenes on Kashyyyk (the Wookiee homeworld).

Lumpy's about two, three years old at the time of THS. Itchy is 350, and Chewie is 200.

From the first time I saw the holiday special, I always thought that Itchy was a perve. I mean they try not to make him seem so, but it always looks like he is doing something interesting when he is watching that horrible 1970's show. I mean, what were the directors thinking?! Wookie porn, fosho!

I said it once, I'll say it again:

Lumpy is the biggest brat ever! Jeez! What kind of kid would steal something out of his elderly grandfather's hands! No wonder Chewie never sticks around!

I feel sorry for Chewie's porn addicted dad.

Plus. he's kinda a deviant. He's getting off to human porn. How can he be attracted to another species? :p

Chewbacca will marry Malla about 5 years before ANH... so there's no need to show something of that stuff in Ep3 :p

okay... you could show Attichitcuk or his future wife Mallatobuck... (she wanted him for a long time after all ;))

    but that's a fictional and never-to-be could...

hm... I didn't really liked the Holiday Special but it was interesting to see normal Kashyyyk every-day-life on screen and Lumpawarrump is cute...
but then I find Salacious Crumb cute, too o_O

Don't forget Itchy is also in the Chewbacca mini-series of comics.

The one thing I didn't like about Chewie's family in the Holiday Special, was how the same sound was used for Lumpy over and over again, that sounds like he's pretending to rev an engine, it was just used over and over again...annoying.

Other than that though, good times.

Is it just me, or is Mala a clinical idiot, even for a wookie?

Just look at the way she's routinely patronised via videophone by the likes of Luke and Leia.

And her all too intense concentration on that horrible cookery programme.

Next time you see it, listen out for the way Luke reassures Mala in the most disgustingly patronising way-

'Have a nice Life Day.' He says.

But what he's really saying is, 'Mala, you're just being moronic again, next time Chewie arrives back late for dinner, don't bother phoning me you Wookie cretin.'

The anthropological question is: Why did Chewie choose as a mate someone this idiotic?

Are all Wookie females genetically imbecilic, or is Chewie afraid of strong, intelligent women (like Leia)?
