My group doesn't tend to use maces, because of a combination of safety and authenticity: maces weren't really used in our time period. However, we do use swords, axes, spears, knives, shields, javelins, slings, and at larger shows, daneaxes and bows. I personally fight with a two-handed spear and a slung shield at the beginning of practice sessions and shows (we start off with demonstration line fights) then hand my spear to one of the newbies with strict instructions not to damage it. Newbies get trained with the spear before any other weapon because they can't hurt themselves or their equally newbie opponents too badly with it.

We then move on to melée fighting, and I use an axe, a langseax, or a sword in my right or my left hand, depending on which arm is currently more bruised, with a shield in my other hand and a scramseax (knife) at my belt. By the end of the last, most brutal melée, if I'm using a sword or a langseax, I tend to discard my shield and fight with a long blade in one hand and my scramseax in the other. Both line fights and melées can open with an exchange of missiles: javelins, combat arrows, apple cores, clumps of sod, anything that's to hand, really.

Oh, and I fight unarmoured, except for a very tough steel helmet. That way I don't have chainmail cutting down on my speed and agility.

Incidentally, EJ, which group do you fight with?

I wouldn't worry about eyesight being a problem, LJ - if you can see well enough with your specs or contacts to tell the yellow patch in the middle of the target from the other colours around it, you can shoot. Trust me on this: some of the newbies I've been training recently are blind as the proverbial bats!

I currently don't fight with one due to time issues, I was in the SCA for a little while till they decided not to come to my area to have practices then a similar group but I have forgotten the name. I haven't had the time in the last year or so to really do anything like that I mean I work a full time job and attend college full time right now not much in the way for spare time.

Yes maces are rather unsafe to use given there is no real way to dampen the damage they do, such is especially true with my flanged mace. Mainly I used it when fighting some one else with a shield and "lost" it halfway through to fight to finish with a sword to lessen the chance of injuring the other person

I've encountered the SCA - Regia Anglorum (my group) usually take the mickey of them for using rattan and not being very authentic in their garb and fighting styles. Steel is much more fun than rattan . . .

Yes I have noticed some SCA people with non authentic outfits but again I haven't had the time in a while to do such.

Any ways I am off to work now

Good night and sleep well JL [:D]
