Jedi_Satimber: Long story short, a badly damaged ISD (going by the name Equinox) finds itself in an isolated star system with one inhabited planet. Problem 1: the planet is threatened by an asteroid; Problem 2: whole system is under Imperial Security Bureau quarantine (for reasons unknown).

In order to resolve the dilemma between breaking ISB regulations and let billions of people die, the captain calls a meeting of his senior officers and decides to blast the asteroid into pieces. He faces serious opposition from Equinox's ISB liaison and his own first officer, who is then deftly manipulated by the ISB person to veto captain's decision.

Some battle of persuasion takes place then; captain's attempts to sway ISB liaison fails, convincing first officer to cancel his veto is successful. At that point, another officer (strong proponent of intervention on moral grounds) kills the first officer and wounds (accidentally) the captain, having previously near-fatally wounded ISB liaison. While captain is in sick bay, the asteroid is destroyed under orders by another of his officers.

So the story ends in some sort of a happy end, except for two people dead (including the killer officer who is later executed), two injured and future unpleasant consequences (detention, suspension) for all persons involved.
