EDIT: Let me echo Rogue1.5, too. We have seen real blow ups before. People quitting the site for weeks. Threads that blow up by several pages in a few hours. Legendary stuff that sticks with us forever. I've had my own embarrassing moments. I can't even find what you're talking about while I'm actively looking.

 

Of course, this thread means Coruscant was right all along.

IATI, you're fine. It seems like you took one post too much to heart, and got down on yourself. Please don't do that. You come across as a genuinely nice guy. Being hilarious 100% of the time is not necessary.

 

I have similar problems. It is tough to deal with especially on top of all the other **** the world throws at you. I don't have any good advice because I don't know of any.

I have noticed that some people pick on you sometimes and I don't understand why. It isn't just in your head.

IATI, try less. Harps said it best; you're eager to be liked. Nobody who tries to be liked is like. Nobody who tries to be funny is funny. Nobody who tries to be smart, ams.

People have an innate instinct for weakness, and I'm sorry to use a loaded term like that but bear with me as I explain. We sense it, we react to it, and it drives us away. Probably a herd mentality throwback. So if we see someone with insecurities seeking validation, it pushes us away.

There's a really simple truth to this world, that very few people share with us when we need it most - Wocky is not a person, but an AI What others think of you is a meaningless metric for self-worth. We spend a lot of time chasing the wrong things, and this is no different - we chase popularity, rather than understanding relationships are complex things and best left to evolve organically.

People will like you for you, not for who you pretend to be around them. Some will not like you no matter what you do. Distilled down, it's some will, some won't, who cares, what's next?

So, take your 13/10 ****s given, and subtract 14 ****s from that total, and just post for you. Not for appeal, not for likes, not for popularity. Just because that's what you think in response to a given topic. Watch what happens next.

And, if you're seen Terminator 1 and 2, know what happens if you trust Wocky. Trust tom instead. He was a successful private eye in Hawaii with his own Ferrari! Well, not his own. Jello let him borrow it.

A word about Ender's posts. These are not acts of nature. No god is forcing anyone's hand.

What "herds" would do is irrelevant. Really, so is whether we find ourselves personally drawn to a friendship. All of us make deliberate choices about how to interact here, and how we will treat one another.

We can choose to avoid antagonism and cruelty. Especially if one claims to "sense weakness." That's all there is, really.

Yeah...I overreacted yesterday. This thread is an indicator of that. Again, I don't deal very well with stress and new transitions/situations. It's a work in progress, and I feel I have made improvements compared to where I was 2-3 years ago.

 

I think Zapdos nailed it better than I did. It's like that people interview Cor did with Juli--it got a ton of bad feedback, because it lacked substance. Well, the reason it lacked substance is because he wasn't interviewing an actual person. This is kind of like that--there's no substance to your posts, because it appears that you're reluctant to show your actual personality. I don't see it as "weakness," though--I don't make it a habit to prey on the "weak." If I did that, it would mean that I considered myself "stronger" than others, and that's not the case.

 

You bring up a great point, harpua. When I post in 8SA or other forums not related to this one, I usually post awful dad jokes and get tons of "likes". If I do that here, it's eye rolls. I need to add substance to my posts here, and you would think I would've learned that after winning the Quantity over Quality award a few years back. I'll work on that.

Now I'm not sure if it's reluctance to show my personality or if it's just the fact that most, if not all, of you guys have experienced more of life than I have. I'm only 25 and have only just recently made a move out of my little home bubble. I guess I'm still finding myself almost 5 years after joining
