The infamous Holiday Special....

What happens in it? Why do you all hate it? Where can I find a copy? Did they really deny that it ever happened? What was the point?

I'm all confused and that makes me sad... it's like some massive in-joke I know nothing of...

You can find copies on ebay. It's about the OT characters going to Chewbacca's home world to celebrate "Life Day" with Chewie's family. There's cameos from some 70s celebrities. Most of it is boring and embarassing crap (the Boba Fett cartoon is alright). Believe me, this show has earned its reputation.

 

You betcha, Latorski, earned its reputation as a piece of Star Wars junk.

GL has mentioned time-after-time that he wished that he had a hammer so that he could destroy every copy that is in existance.

 

The only place I've seen the Holiday Special officially mentioned is on Hyperspace. They've even shown a few stills from the show.

As for where you can get it, the legal answer is "nowhere".

Because LFL haven't released an official copy. All other copies are bootlegs, therefore illegal.

 

Fortunately I haven't seen it but I've read the script and trust me, that was bad enough!

 

If you happen to watch it you will understand why the 70's and drug usage is a bad combo. Not that drug usage is a good thing. Anyway...

Someone must have been high on "spice" when they proposed the whole concept.

What amazes me is that GL went along with it and gave it his blessing. Yikes!!!

 

One interesting aspect of that obtrusively dated but maybe a bit self-conscious film is the way it characterizes Chewbacca's family. I've read from the EU on occasion, and the Kashyykk scenes from Hutt Gambit and Rebel Dawn, and from Heir to the Empire, and from a Black Fleet Crisis book...and the only way I could imagine domestic wookiee life was to think of Lumpy toolin' around in the wookiees' home and watching the flatscreen up in the wroshyr trees for the Star Wars Holiday Special...

Same goes for the AOTC fireplace love scene!

 

In his scene in the special, Mark Hamill is wearing soooo much make up, I swear he looks like a girl...

To me, the Holiday Special is one of those things which is so bad that it's almost good.

Although, the musical scenes...are highly disturbing.
