The corporations would prefer a representative republic that they can influence. The Galactic Empire had a senate that was without real power, Imperial governors who were part of the military and loyal to the Emperor, with the Emperor himself centralising power around himself, dismantling the laws of the Republic over the course of a couple of decades. In a deleted scene from ANH, Biggs talks about the Empire nationalising commerce, whereas in Empire, it's implied that certain factions, such as the Mining Guild, had at least some autonomy. However, the Empire is clearly moving to take control of everything.

This all started way back during the Clone Wars. One of the reasons the Clone Wars started was because the big corporate interests, with their own private armies, wanted less restrictions and lower taxation. This turned out to be a complete ruse by Palpatine who used the war to take control of them completely, as evidenced by his seizure of the banks in Clone Wars. So the corporations would have undoubtedly supported the Empire publicly, but privately, they wanted nothing more than to see the Empire fall and be replaced with the same kind of corrupt and easily manipulated republic that had come before.

So... instead of moving AWAY from the much-criticized focus on galactic politics and economics that turned parts of the prequel trilogy into C-Span In Space, we are theorizing that Disney (probably the largest producer of children's entertainment in the world, and the second largest broadcasting business in the world), is going to allow the sequel trilogy to be turned into a pulpit for EVEN MORE divisive, unpleasant politics?

As a previous poster brought out, the technological disparity between the Empire and the Rebels had nothing to do with "class warfare". It was the language of cinema, showing the difference in power between the two factions without ever having to say a word. Nobody had to say: "The Empire is so powerful they're building superweapons named after celestial bodies, and here we are trotting about on a stinking hairy ram-beast!" We were shown the disparity - not a disparity in "class" or "income inequality", but in power.
