The JC and other message boards

Massive drama potential, I know, but it's something I want a bit of clarification on. We're obviously not the only Star Wars message board on the Internet, there's plenty of other ones around. Many of us post on more than one message board (I post on two or three other than this one). I doubt that this would affect regular users like myself, but how does it affect moderators?

I only ask because I hear rumours abounding on other boards of "conflicts of interest", which seems like a pretty stupid idea to me. The JC may not be on the best of terms with one or two other boards, but unless someone from here goes around flaming the JC elsewhere, I don't see why it's an issue. (Even then, it's not on the JC so there's not a lot anyone here can do about it.)

 

Mods can go elsewhere, but they arent supposed to mod elsewhere.

Its more of a matter of split loyalties, I think. If problems arise between sites (as has happened in the past), the mod could cop flack from both sides....the mod could become the target of suspicion when there are hijinks.

So the rule seems to be that its safer to avoid situations where there are possible conflicts of interest.

I dont know...I would hope that if a member was thought highly enough to be trusted to be a mod, then they would be trusted enough to do the right thing by the JC, regardless of position at another SW site.

 

I don't know why, but reading dagsy's post it made me think about sidious. Yano, double idenities, controling two boards, creating conflict between them....

There usually isn't a problem with moderators signing up at other message boards. However, prior to modding at another board, it usually gets discussed on a case-by-case basis to make sure that it isn't any sort of conflict of interest.

 

Well Nashira, posting at a message board hardly qualifies as a life.

Hmmm, many mods are members at other boards, some are even famous for it, however given the time constraints of pretending the Internet isn't your life and haveing the internet be your life it's hard to mod multple large boards.

Managing Time is like juggling. Throw a ball up, catch another, throw another up, catch another and so on.

Once you ease yourself in, it gets easier to manage more and more. I don't see any problem with mods (here) modding other message boards, no matter who visits them. Now, yes, things like that may be seen as suspicious if suddenly information is leaking to that site from MS or something, and they should understand why they are suspect. It's simply one of the factors you must consider. Don't hang out with the wrong crowd.

I've never had any sort of problem working on several websites besides TFN, and modding their boards, even though it's painfully obvious to the TFN brass. I understand there's a difference between me and the Mods, but there's also a similarity.
