Hi to all the new users! I'm reposting this edition of my JC Glossary here, so that all of you can familiarise yourselves with all the JC slang and terminology. I hope that all of you find this thread interesting and informative.

    The Jedi Council Glossary
A - H:

AC: On UBB, this was the JC Advisory Council, the private forum in which administrators and authorised members discussed forum policies. This forum was removed in the move to Snowboard, but a new Advisory Council was created recently, comprised of a new group of members.

active sort: A Snowboard option which sorts topics on the main board index by last reply date added, in descending order. This causes a topic to be pushed up higher on the index when a new reply is added to it.

active topic notification: A Snowboard option allowing a poster to be notified via e-mail or ICQ of replies to that post. Not normally a recommended option, as it has a tendency to have problems as well as take up much of a member?s e-mail account space.

admin: A generic term referring to any moderator, manager, or administrator.

administrator: On the UBB, an administrator was a member that was chosen by current administrators to administrate the board. On SnowBoard, administrators are the highest-ranking forum leaders. Like admin, it is also a generic term for any forum leader.

AFAIK: Rarely used abbreviation for "As far as I know".

AIM: Acronym for "AOL Instant Messenger", an instant messaging service used by many JCers.

alias: A secondary username for a member.

"All Things Imperial": A series of intelligent threads started long ago by Erik Pflueger in the P(SA) forum. All but one of the "All Things Imperial" threads were archived on UBB.

ANH: Commonly used abbreviation for the film Episode IV: A New Hope.

announcements: Special messages posted by forum leaders. In the "Golden Age", there was a forum named Announcements where these messages were posted. It was later replaced with an announcements feature that was linked to at the top of the topic listings. In late 2000, a second [link=http://boards.theforce.net/board.asp?brd=10182]Announcements[/link] forum was created.

AOTC: Commonly used abbreviation for the film Episode II: Attack of the Clones.

archive: A forum-like area in which topics are archived. Currently, UBB archives can be accessed in the new [link=http://www1.theforce.net/JC_Archives/]JC Archives Listing[/link]

archived thread: A thread that has been preserved in an archive. Archived threads are read-only.

AU: Abbreviation for "Alternate Universe". This abbreviation is used mostly in [link=http://boards.theforce.net/board.asp?brd=10016]Fan Fiction[/link].

BAH!: A humorous phrase used to express anger or dislike towards something, as in SotS? now defunct thread "Sex??? BAH!!!" or the former "Bah, newbies!". stinrab popularised this expression.

banning: The act of temporarily or permanently taking away a person's posting privileges. Bans are of two types: name bans (the person cannot post with that name), and IP bans (the person may not be able to post with that computer). Only administrators, managers and moderators can ban people. Instructions for banned users can be found [link=http://boards.theforce.net/message.asp?topic=2991572]here[/link].

bashers: A group of members who feel TPM could have been better made. Although individual bashers may either like or dislike the movie as a whole, all bashers agree that certain elements of TPM could have been improved.

Beardi Knights: A group of members who use their beard in order to control the Force. They follow the "Beard theory, plus some food". This group was started and resides in what is now the [link=http://boards.theforce.net/board.asp?brd=10001]Attack of the Clones (Spoilers)[/link] forum.

    H - P:

HAND: Abbreviation for "Have a nice day". Commonly used by Chyren.

"Hello" : A classic thread posted by david_43, which started the phenomenon of chat threads. yavin44's archived repost of the thread can be found here.

HoJo Knights: Another fan-fic group which began long ago.

H.S.B. of the A.O.G: Acronym for the "Holy Sacred Brotherhood of the Almighty and
Omniscient Gonk", otherwise known as the Gonk Knights. Pyrus came up with this
acronym in david_43's classic "Hello" thread.

HTH: Abbreviation for "Hope that helps". Commonly used by Chyren.

ICQ: A popular messaging service used by many JC members. ICQ stands for "I Seek You".

IIRC: Rarely used abbreviation for "If I recall correctly".

IM(H)O: Commonly used abbreviation for "In my (humble) opinion" or "In my (honest) opinion". It is often used in the JC after or before a person states his opinion on a subject.

index: A thread which links other Forum threads in categorical or alphabetical order. On the UBB JC, every Forum had one index thread. However, due to the need to search through all the forums and update the links after the Snowboards move, only a few forums currently have index threads. They can be found at the header navigation layout at the top of each forum's page.

IP: Abbreviation for ?Internet Protocol?. An IP address is a 32-bit number that identifies each sender or receiver of information that is sent across the Internet. An IP may be static, meaning it does not change from one session to the next (the case for most at-work computers), or it may be dynamic, meaning it varies with each session (the case for most dial-in services).

IP banning: The act of banning a person's IP from the forums.

Isabella: stinrab's loving and caring goat.

    Jackalope: Bullwinkle's nickname for troublemakers.

J.A.D.E: Acronym for "Just Another Darn Erratic (poster)". Jedi-Jade once came up with this alternative to S.I.T.H.

J.A.S.M.A.N: An acronym for "Jedicouncil Administrative Software Microsoft Application Nerdware". Probot came up with this acronym as part of a joke (having to do with jasman as an artificial intelligence) in a now long-gone thread.

jasman=porn: FreeBeer.com's wacky theory regarding the similarities between porn and jasman. It stated that since everything in porn was true and since everything jasman said was true, then they were one and the same. This theory was first posted in the original "The JC Glossary" thread.

jasman's speedo: An infamous article of clothing that terrifies oldbies to this day.

Jawa Thread Police: A mysterious group of small hooded figures known to frequent the Fan Fiction forum, tirelessly patrolling certain fanfic threads. Lt. Utin, Jawa Thread Cop is their fearless leader.

JC: Commonly used abbreviation for the Jedi Council.

JC Anniversary: The celebration that occurs when a member has been in the JC for one, two or even three years.

JC's Birthday: July 8. The JC was formed on that day in 1998.

JCC: Commonly used abbreviation for Your Jedi Council Community.

JCNGL: JediCouncil.Net Gaming League, a group of users in the Games forum who play a SW game every weekend. Typically Jedi Knight or Mysteries of the Sith, but they have been known to play others, such as X-Wing Alliance.

JC Purgatory: The imaginary place in which deleted threads go to.

JC Ruling Circle: A core group

    Q - Z

red folder: In the former UBB, when a thread had new posts, a red folder appeared next to it in the topic listing.

redundancy police: A group of members who have taken it upon themselves to ?police? the AOTC forum for redundant threads. Also jokingly called the "reduncany police".

redundancy-tolerant: A term defining those who do not feel redundancy is a major issue in the JC.

redundant thread: A topic that has been discussed ad nauseum.

"Reiterating Forum Etiquette": Octavya's very helpful thread posted during the "Golden Age" in 1998. jasman reposted the topic shortly after a pruning had deleted it, renaming it FORUM ETIQUETTE (Repost).

RHS: "Royal Handmaiden Society", a group of members who greatly admire the handmaidens featured in TPM and the actresses who played them.

RotE2&3I: An acronym for ?Return of the Episode 2 & 3 Index?, originally coined by Shi-Adi-Maya to bring an index to the top. Variations exist.

ROTFLMAO: "Rolling on the floor laughing my *** off". Another variant is ROTF. Both are stronger versions of LOL for expressing laughter.

RotJ: Commonly used abbreviation for the film Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.

SC: The Slacker Council, an "adult" EZ-Board which many JCers frequented. They moved recently to another board provider.

scalpers: Those who buy SW collectibles simply to sell them at a higher price. The topic of scalping is discussed very often in the Collecting forum.

Scott: Scott Chitwood, one of the founders of TF.N and the JC.

search function: An UBB feature that allowed users to search for threads. This feature was turned-off a few months before the Snowboard move due to problems that it caused for the server.

senior member: An unofficial status given to members who have been in the JC for a long period of time.

"Serendipity": The nickname of the very first blank thread.

server crash: A term used for when the server causes problems for the JC. A nearly weekly holiday for the UBB-based JC, it happens much less frequently on Snowboard.

signature: A catch phrase that appears automatically under posts. Snowboard?s current design standardises all signatures ever used by a specific member to the current signature listed in the profile. Thus, when the signature is changed in the profile, all other previously posted signatures by that member will also be changed to the new signature.

Sinrab: stinrab's one-time arch-nemesis who thought that no one could catch him. He has made several apperances in recent months.

site administrator: An administrator, moderator or VIP who is also a TF.N staff member.

S.I.T.H: An acronym for "Sick In The Head". It is an unofficial title given to members who have more than 1000 posts.

Sith Council: The JC was briefly renamed the Sith Council during the Halloween holiday in 1999. This is also the name of a now-defunct UBB board created by former JC member b]Son of a Hutt

Slackergate: A brief, but controversial time in the JC, when the slackers' threads were deleted.

slackers: A group of JC members who post in the JC from either work or school and usually spend more time posting than working or studying. This group has its own ezboard called the Slacker Council.

S.L.A.M.M.E.D: The acronym for "Stout Lovers Among Men Modestly Enjoying Drunkeness", a humorous interest group led by YODA the all powerful.

slowbie: A member who doesn't post too often.

smilies: In the old UBB, icons in the form of smiley faces that were used to show emotion. They currently serve the same purpose on Snowboards. The list of smilies can be

I have a conntention with definition of the word post

post: A reply to a thread.

if this was true then the original thread starter would not count as a post yet it does.

I agree. The new way of "flood control" happens to be the irritating "one post per minute rule".

This should be helpful. Thank you. Out of curiosity, does anyone think a list of the acronyms used for EU titles and authors would be helpful?

I'm still waiting to make it into the Glossary.

    I'd feel special then.

I think a list of those acronyms is in the yellowpages....
