As it is technically Sunday here and I would like some sleep (As I doubt I'll be getting much for the next month) here's Gryffindor's tasks for the week.....don't worry guys, I'm slowing down now on the tasks as I have realised I kinda need to do some university work

Books

Discuss the significance of any character?s name and how it relates to their character and personality and/or what happens to them throughout the books. May do up to 3. 10 points.

Sirius Black
Named after Alpha Canis Majoris, the dog star constellation. Sirius is the luminary of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog. Sirius Black can transform into a large black dog, he managed to do this at a young age and use this to break out of Azkaban, making Sirius Black one of the brightest wizards.

Remus Lupin
Remus comes from the Roman stories of Remus and Romulus who were raised by wolves.
Lupin also comes from the word Lupine meaning characteristic of or resembling a wolf. However, his middle name is John meaning God is gracious or merciful. His middle name gives him the association with being human while the first and surname connect him to his wolf side. The names don't give much for his character however you can determine that the "John" is for his patient side while his first and surname being wild associations show there is another side to him which he keeps hidden.

Hermione Granger
Hermione comes from the Greek meaning "messenger; earthly."
Granger is a Saxon word meaning one who superintended a large farm or Grange. Often Hermione is the one having to go between Harry and Ron trying to get them to talk to each other a bit like herding a farm.

1. Hand of Glory, Brings light only to the holder partiulary good if you are a theif.

2. Boomslang Skin, Taken form the snake of the same name it is a vital ingredient in Polyjuice potion.

3. Porcupine Quills, these are used in a boil cure potion and help to reduce the boils thought the same means that the quills retract, must only be added to the potion after removing from the flame.

4. Drangons Blood, of all the various uses of this ingriediant number tweleve is that of oven cleaner.

5. Powdered Moonstone, combined with syrup of Helebore will make a Draught of Peace potion.

6. Horcrux, An object in which a wizard can hide part of his soul thus enabaling himself to cheat death.

7. Pesieve, A shollow stone basin that is used to store and recollect memories.

8. Scarab Beetles, when crushed they are used in a Wit Sharpening Potion.

9. Joberknoll Feathers, are used in truth potions particulary Veritaserum, these are used as the bird it is taken from makes no sound at all until the moment of its death, when it screams all of the noises that it has ever heard, because of this the feathers make the potion takers tell the truth.

10. Wartcap Powder, A substance which causes the skin of a person who touches it to form a thick hard crust.

Books

What exactly happened to Umbridge in the forest in OOTP? Please remember that these boards are PG. 5 points.

Well, since it has to be PG, we'll just say that the centaurs tied her up and just scared her in general. No actual physical contact, they just scared the willies out of her. Probably just a lot of intimidating looks, threats, etc. etc.


Ask me again on a non-PG rated board and I'll tell you something else.

Can one be an Animagus and a werewolf at the same time? Why or why not? 10 points.

The short answer is no. It is not possible to be an Animagus and a werewolf at the same time. The reasons why are rather complicated. A werewolf is a creature that is ruled by its basic emotions, and as such are not considered to have the emotional centre needed in order to control themselves. This makes them rather uncontrollable at the best of times (see Professor Lupin in POA). Animagus, like werewolves, are an animal form of a wizard or witch. Unlike werewolves, however, they are much more emotionally stable, given that the wizard or witch has full control of themselves in their animal state (barring certain circumstances such as a more carnivorous animal form or relenting to natural bloodlust). This is further augmented by the fact that becoming an Animagi is a voluntary process while becoming a werewolf is the result of getting bitten by another werewolf, an event usually outside of a wizard/witch?s control.

Movies

What scenes might be omitted from the HBP movie? Why would they be omitted? May do up to 3. 10 points.

Scene #1 - Chapter Six

I believe the scene in Madame Milkin's robe shop will be left out. There's not really anything that happens in there that is needed for the overall plot, other than the whole Malfoy's-sensitive-about-his-left-arm thing, which could be covered enough in the Borgin and Burke's scene with Draco. We all know Draco a butt, likes to call Hermoine a mudblood, and his mom is a snot, so that doesn't need to be seen and heard again. There's really no reason to have this scene in.


Scene #2 - Chapter Fifteen

Slughorn's Christmas party is another thing that can be left on the cutting room floor. The only super-significant thing that happens in that scene is Harry overhearing Snape and Draco's conversation in the classroom. This can be put in anywhere. I don't think the movie is going to have too big a focus on Slughorn and his "Slug Club". As far as the Hermoine/McLaggen and Harry/Luna coupling goes during this party, there's going to be enough going on without having to worry about yucky couples and more rumors. There's not much reason to put this scene in the movie.

Scene #3 - Chapter 18

Apparition Lessons are another thing I think doesn't hold enough water to make a place in the movie. The only thing that happens in this scene is Harry overhearing the conversation between Malfoy and his goons. That can happen anywhere. So, unless they want to add a little painful gore in the movie by showing someone splinch themselves, there's not much this scene can add to the movie.

Lupin became a werewolf at the hand of Fenrir Greyback. He will definitely step up as a father figure for Harry with James, Sirius and Dumbledore being gone. When the Order of the Phoenix returns, he will be one of the leaders taking up the roles of those who have fallen in previous books. Slytherin Update

Books

What would have happened if Harry hadn?t touched the Triwizard Cup in Goblet of Fire? For example, what if Fleur or Krum had reached it first? 10 points.

If either Krum or Fleur reached the cup before Harry, the Portkey would have taken them to Voldemort, of course. It could go one of two ways. First, Voldemort could have killed whoever reached the graveyard, like his killed Cedric when he came with Harry. However, Voldemort planned this moment (and Barty Crouch Jr. as well) all schoolyear, so Voldemort might have resorted to using either student's blood in order to be ressurected.

But, it would not be Harry's blood and that is the element that was needed in order for Voldemort to make him invincible and to have the protection Harry had. But, like stated, with a whole years worth of planning, he might just take what he could get. Although he would be really, really angry that his plan fell apart and would take it out on someone.

Cassandra Trelawney, a briefly mentioned ancestor of Professor Trelawney, probably got her name from the mythological seer Cassandra of Troy. According to Greek legend, Cassandra spurned the advances of the god Apollo, who then cursed her with the Sight. Though she knew the future, when she told people, they didn?t believe her. Because she was a famous seer, Rowling chose her name for that of Professor Trelawney?s relative, who was said to be a famous seer.

The first part of Draco Malfoy?s name is derived from the word ?dragon.? In European mythology, dragons were evil creatures that ate fair maidens and had to be slain by noble knights. His last name has the root ?mal? in it, which means ?bad.? His first and last name together show that he is all-around not a good guy.

Peter Pettigrew?s nickname, Wormtail, suits his personality perfectly. Worms are small creatures that crawl on the ground and try not to attract attention. They are seen as low and unworthy. They literally have no spines, while Wormtail is lacking a figurative one. Worms are almost like little cousins of snakes, but not as grand and noble. Thus, Wormtail is not as big and grand as the snakes (the Death Eaters who all came from Slytherin).

What would have happened if Slughorn had given the Potions Book to Ron in HBP? 10 points.

Ron would have used the Half-Blood Prince?s book to his advantage, just like Harry, and he would have reveled in his success more since he?s usually in Harry?s shadow. However, he would not become as obsessed with the book as Harry did, because Harry has an obsessive personality and Ron doesn?t. It would have made Hermione mad, but it wouldn?t have driven her nuts. Harry probably would have been a little jealous, but Ron probably would have shared the book and his success.

Movies

The HBP movie will probably not include the first chapter where Fudge and Scrimgoer visit the Muggle Prime Minister. All that the chapter does really is let us know that there is a new Minister of Magic, which can be done in a sentence someplace else. Taking an entire chapter to do that in the book was a bit much, and with the time constraints in the movie it would be silly to include that.

Mar is serving her first term as a Slytherin prefect, and her first full game with Slytherin. She isn?t scared of taking on long or hard tasks, and is comfortable enough in her role to post one of the weekly updates.

Mar is an ex-JC mod and a huge Monty Python addict. She is trying to convert the JC posters to Monty Python-ism. Since most of the other Slytherins are also slightly addicted to Monty Python, don?t be surprised when she announces that we are changing out House symbol from a serpent to the Holy Grail.

Barty Crouch Jr. is a perfect candidate for the Wizarding Darwin awards. After brilliantly entering Harry in the Twiwizard Tournament and getting him to Voldemort, he was stupid enough not to kill Harry right away after getting him away from Dumbledore. Instead he talked and ranted, which gave Dumbledore enough time to figure out who had taken Harry and where to. Then Barty was given the Kiss, effectively killing him. A smart man would have gotten Harry away and then killed him, after making sure he couldn?t be followed.

Barty Crouch Sr. is also a good candidate. Knowing that his son was dangerous and still a strong supporter of the Dark Lord, he took him out of prison and kept him in his house where he could potentially be noticed. He took Barty to a Quidditch game and let him escape, and then let Voldemort into his own house and so was put under the Imperious Curse. When he tried to fight it he was killed. If he had been more careful, it wouldn?t have happened.

Imelda Van Ike, and Auror for the Ministry of Magic, is a third candidate for the award. She was late to work one morning and forgot her wand when she Apparated. She was quickly sent from work to a sighting of Death Easters. When she arrived, she pulled out her wand to stupefy them and take them to Azkaban when she realized she didn?t have it. Before she could go back and get it, the Death Eaters killed her with Avada Kedavra.

Quidditch Spirit

Describe a famous game of Quidditch (such as a World Cup, or a game of exceeding length). 20 points.

In the longest ever Quidditch World Cup, it was raining for days and thus, the Seekers had an awful time trying to see the snitch. The players were constantly subbing in and out so they could get a chance to sleep. Also, because of the rain, the players took to wearing multiple layers of clothing so they wouldn't freeze to death. Finally, after nearly two weeks straight of playing, the Australian's seeker accidentally blundered into the snitch and would've caught it and won the game FINALLY if the Greek seeker hadn't been slightly more awake and snatched it right out of the Australian's robe sleeve and won the game for Greece.

It was the last Hogsmeade weekend of the year for Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny and they were enjoying it before they were forced to stay indoors and study for their exams. ?Hey Harry! Look at this!? Ron said, holding up a small blue package. ?It says that these can turn your clothes into an awesome costume and that it?ll wear off after a few hours.?

Harry took the package from his friend and read the back of it. ?Those could be fun. Let?s see if we can get the girls to try it too. Maybe some other people too.?

Ginny and Hermione wandered over. ?What are those?? Ginny asked.

?Pills that turn your clothes into a costume for a few hours,? Harry replied. ?Want to try them with us?? She nodded. ?Hermione??

?No, we?ve got to start studying for-? she started to say.

?Oh come on, Hermione,? Ron exclaimed. ?We?ve got to have a bit of fun before exams turn us all into hermits!?

She rolled her eyes. ?Fine then. I?ll try one too. But if these go terribly wrong, don?t blame me because I still think we should study.?

The four, plus Neville and Luna who had heard what they were doing and wanted to try to, were sitting outside near the lake, each with a pill in his or her hand.

?Alright, let?s try this,? Ron said excitedly. ?On a count of three then?? The others nodded.

?One. Two. THREE!? they said together before swallowing the pills. For a moment nothing happened. The next moment, they were thrown into a gray cyclone-like thing that definitely wasn?t changing their clothes into costumes.

Harry landed on his back with an oomph. Rubbing the back of his neck as he slowly rose to his feet, he glanced around and saw the others also slowly rising to their feet.

?Umm, guys?? Ginny asked. ?Why are we in a cemetery??
