Alright a few points worth reviewing:

1. Yes, the fundamental human interaction is in-person communication. Despite the synecdoche I employed, this isn't supposed to just be confined to vocalizations alone, but all parts of an in-person interaction. While we've developed several alternative forms, all are essentially surrogate for this one process.

2. For instance, someone asked about a husband and wife daily writing letters to one another. I'd reverse the question. Is it the posters position that people in such a situation did not try to think of themselves as trying to maintain the sort of contact they had in person, or that they somehow would not have preferred it?

3. I think that quality of various modes of communication are reflected in how closely they can approximate the ideal. So, for instance, in conveying someone's actual voice in real time, telephones are very effective for establishing a simulacrum of real interactions. Video conferencing is also popular in some quarters, though I have an aversion to photography of that sort, so I've never personally engaged. On the lower end of the scale, I think that something like written letters, which at least consist of tangible objects, are in that sense more substantive than e-mails, which do not. Smilies are a (in my opinion terrible) attempt to add more of the texture that some of these other forms can achieve.

4. Some forms of communication are of a fundmentally different type. I'd argue that a stop sign, for instance, is not really supposed to be visualized as an in-person interaction. Rather, it is meant to convey impersonal information about the world in a way that's almost reflexive, as when the setting sun signals that night approaches.
4b. The case of religious documents is a pretty interesting phenomena in many faiths, as they posit both direct interaction with their deities via the divine writ, while also positioning the same writings as they type found above, that aren't really based in direct communication at all. Someone should probably further explore this tension, though I'm sure someone somewhere has.

5. I really don't see how the idea I expressed is different than talking with someone you miss on the phone and wishing they were there, or being prompted to remember the good times you had in person with someone after reading a letter they wrote. As you all pointed out, several of you have chosen to seek out real life interactions with one another. I would think that testifies to the inadequacy of this medium. Perhaps you all have different way of conceptualizing or speaking about it, though? Or maybe you don't. I can't really say. But this how I understand things.
