Watching some of the OT recently and realized how "ordinary" the jump to light speed appears nowadays. Kind of matter-of-fact, mildly interesting at best, visually I mean.

So this begs the question, does Ep VII, assuming it has a jump to lightspeed, will it look more effects heavy? Should it? And with continuity a consistent concern, should it stay basically the same. I think so, but curious as to what others think.

    Lightspeed is too slow.

This is how Disney plans to make Star Wars movies.

Sir, We've never gone that fast before, I don't think the ship can take it!

It should remain the same as what we saw in the OT. I certainly missed that iconic visual from the PT. Give us a story and a group of characters we care deeply about, and the jump to light speed will be the cherry to top it off.

They seem pretty sure that they want to go all OT-style with this, so I expect it to be pretty much the same.

It could be changed with an advance in lightspeed technology being the reason.

A hyperspace accident would be good ;)

    Ordinary??

Are you serious? Its still a very cool effect.

I expect it to look the same as the OT.

Perhaps they should adapt themselves to the modern times ;)

No, just kidding. Let Hyperspace be the old hyperspace we know and love.

Jumping into hyperspace should look the same. That visual is timeless and doesn't need a new look.

It has to remain the same otherwise it might as well be a star trek movie we're watching.

I would think it would remain the same, but what do I know. I don't think they needed to update Stormtroopers. [face_devil]

I know the light speed cockpit view is missing from the PT; now I'm wondering, did we ever see that first person POV of light speed in any other ship besides the Falcon? I can't recall at the moment, but if so that would be cool if they reserved it only for the Falcon.

That's a good point. I think with the Falcon it is particularly fitting, especially with its famous nav computer capabilities. There is also the drama of wondering if it will in fact be able to make the jump with its spotty engine...always loved that...added tension and whimsy at the same time.

Hyperspace in color? Star Wars is't black and white, so hyperspace was already in color.

Star Trek movies kept jazzing up the jump with each successive sequel/reboot. With J.J. in charge I'm betting the SW7 jump will be very similar to the OT star streaks, but jazzed up a little. Not so much to tick everybody off, but enough to say "this is a new era."

That was Lucas' intention. He deliberately didn't do it for the PT because he wanted that moment to be unique to the Falcon. No other ship in the Star Wars movies gets the streak of light visual because all the jumps are seen from outside the ship.

He didn't want it to be unique to the Falcon, he wanted the impact of the first jump to Hyperspace to keep it's significance in ANH when viewing in chronological order.

As seen here, it is NOT unique to the Falcon in the OT.

Updating visual effects is a lot different to costumes.

Laser bolts, hyperspace travel, etc. would need to be consistent, even after 30 years - eg. Guns are a lot more powerful now than thirty years ago but a bullet is still a bullet, car is still a car.

The same old stormtroopers? That would be just plain boring.

There's a dramatic difference between some of the visual effects in the first Star Trek TV series, and the first Star Trek movies.

Still, series to movies, may be a different thing to "Movies to Later Movies".
