Is that the Starkiller Base in the background of this snowy, mountainous environment?

    This, from google:

    Sounds like a certain saber...

Luke disappears. His nephew, Kylo leads the new knights?

This could veer slightly past "homage" territory...

Who owns the rights to those books/characters? Has the copyright ran out on that? I'm just curious about the legality of it all. I mean...there seem to be a lot of similarities (not to mention the name 'Ren' itself).

Let's hope Rian Johnson is inspired by the books of Dr. Ronald Chevalier. I'd be up for some cyborg harpies in VIII.

The second book shown has a copyright of March 1983.

    EDIT: Double post. Sorry.

My opinion about the sabre, is that Kylo and Co are after it specifically for its crystal. Why, I just don't know? But that concept art of Maz with (what I assume is the Sabres blue crystal) holds certain significance I think. Going to be intriguing to discover just what its importance is :)

My first choice would be that the KoR were formed after RotJ and are some kind of Vader worshipping fanatics. However if they are from way, way off in deep space...from a whole different galaxy, I could be OK with that too.

Regarding the Knights of Ren, I don't know if that book is the inspiration. But during the Droids or Ewoks cartoon series, wasn't there a character named Kybo Ren?

That Ren plot is not much different than Mordred trying take down his father Arthur for the right to rule Camelot.

There's nothing really new under the sun. ;)

    Only new mixes of elements.

Agreed. Is it possible that we've been mislead regarding these Knights of Ren? This is just too close to the ST thing. What if this whole KoR thing in the ST is misdirection? I can't believe that JJ would just straight copy these ideas?! If that's the case, that's brutal lol. Maybe the whole KoR thing is a lie or a smoke screen, maybe there aren't going to be any KoR, it was all a lie/fake to throw us off.

Probably a coincidence. The book is supposed to be awful.

Basically the plot is the plot you see in hundreds of fantasy stories: a magical gem and evil knights trying to take down a king.

The biggest coincidence is that both stories may have a "Knights of Ren," but I doubt the Knights of Ren in the ST will be flying around on winged creatures, but rather star ships, if anything. So they may have a name in common and be bad, but that's general enough to be pure coincidence.

Basically, it's a third or fourth rate book that no one should consider unique intellectual material because it's already borrowing its own generic structure and themes from fantasy and religious material.

Now if George Lucas had liked the name of a Knights of Ren from some old B movie, people here would be excited about the use of pastiche, but if JJ or Kasdan like a name in a B- level book, people start talking about plagiarism.

The name "ren" itself is ubiquitous enough I wouldn't be surprised if we find another Knights of Ren lurking around in B literature somewhere.

This is more of a minor curiosity than anything else, imho. Keep in mind, authors can actually use previously published book titles as their own titles. I could title my book Moby-Dick, and no one could do anything about it. The content, of course, would need be different enough though. My Moby-Dick could be about a dude named Larry who finds a mysterious tattoo on his arm one morning ("Moby-Dick").

If JJ has read this book, I'm sure the author would consider it a honorable homage.

The test is wether it's confusingly similar, I don't think that's an issue.

Ren is a one syllable, vaguely asian-sounding name. Thousans upon thousans upon thousands of books have been printed with different names of it. It is not all that unlikely that Ren pops up on a cover of one of them.
