Finn wearing the pilot gear is the most bizarre image there. What, were all of his Crait scenes re-shot? Did they do a version of his attempted desertion/meeting Rose with Finn wearing a flight suit, then the re-shot this scene completely with his jacket? When was he supposed to have this outfit on?

Huh...So Finn had some semblance of development and the time on Achh-oo wasn’t so basic.

I want my directors directors cut please...

It's an interesting mystery. An early script placed Finn on the bomber with Paige, per the Art of TLJ book, but this appears to have been changed by Rian well before any photography took place.

In other news, I find it amusing that this first picture of DJ shows him in a location that does not appear in the film.

And this (gorgeous) picture of Luke does not appear either (the youthfulness of Mark here almost could imply a flashback arrival on Achto?):

Anything to do with aliens or creatures always get me. Looking at the VD book, a lot of creatures and aliens were cut. The caretaker's village on Ach-To was completely excised. It looks beautiful. Also, the bathhouse moment on Canto Bight. All the aliens in there looked awesome. So sad they were cut.

It seems to me that's how Luke looked during the flashback to his Jedi academy and younger Ben.

This DJ photo should only be a promotional image.

It would most likely have to be a flashback scene.

What’s the status of deleted scenes in the Star Wars canon? Are they always canon, always non-canon, or does it depend?

I saw this yesterday, and was wondering the same thing. I guess flashback would be the only thing that would make sense. This seems like it's also an actual scene between Dern and Hamill, or at least one where the two interact with each other, as opposed to a "we're in the same scene, but just in the background." At least, that's how I interpret it.

Does anyone else recall set photos of Hamill during production that may shed some clues to this scene?

I believe it depends on their content and whether this contradicts anything else. They're basically weak canon and the most vulnerable to being overwritten. The deleted scene from TFA with Leia and Korr Sella for example we can probably safely see as canon, but the Unkar Plutt scene on Takodana and confrontation with Leia and Chewbacca is probably less canon.

Yeah, there were a lot of extras walking around in the daylight; and I seem to remember some Scenes being Shot at daytime. I also seem to remember seeing one of those Limited Edition Topps trading cards showing a couple Canto Bight police officers at daylight.

As far as the Rumored Rey fighting a sea creature Scene; it was probably cut for the Luke milking the alien Scene.

Actually, are we sure that was ever a thing? I think that was only a rumor because the sea monster existed, so people assumed it would be fought. I remember seeing its tail splash into the ocean in the background early on in the movie but there were never even any hints that it would be plot-relevant, let alone that Rey would fight it.

Could Hamill have played a motion captured CGI character in a scene with Dern???

Or it's more of Hamill trolling

Yeah, it was just a Rumor. I was just being sarcastic about the Milking Scene. :p And you are right about the tail splashing in the ocean; so there might have been some Scene Shot with Rey, and the sea monster. Who knows? [face_dunno]

So good time to bring this thread to fruition after the scenes were revealed with the digital versions last night. Here are my thoughts, and I like that RJ gives commentary on them to if you want that option.

    Original Alternate Opening:
This is actually was a really clever opening. Tilting down the galaxy to see what appeared to be a planet per usual was Finn's dome that he awoke in. It's a trick, and while I appreciate what he was going for, I agree that with SW you have to get right to the point, and I prefer the opening we got. Still cool to see this though.

Paige's Gun Jams: I liked this intro sequence. I guess it wouldn't fit in with the final version, but I wished they could have made it work.

Luke has a moment: What a powerful moment that MH brought, crying, and it really hit me. It made his character in this movie that much more better. Up until this point, Luke held back any emotion over Han and Rey telling him that the galaxy needed Luke Skywalker. He then gets his moment alone to let out those emotions. I guess Johnson's reasons is that he wanted sequences to flow longer with the story and this got in the way? Either way this should have stayed. But watching the regular cut of the movie, the transition is much smoother. Still could have put this somewhere else. The matching cut with him and Carrie was powerful but very sad at the same time.

Poe: Not much of a Sewer:poe and Finn moment. It was cool to see Poe give Finn his jacket again. There was a line "i'm not much of a sewer," and showed the jacket to be more of a mess. This was kind of a joke moment and glad it was cut. RJ mentioned rebels running the halls between them was kind of an Empire Strikes Back moment on Hoth, with everyone scurrying. I never really put those connections together but yeah good reference.

It's Kind of Weird That You Recorded That: I liked this scene, one of my favorites. Was cut because of pacing issues. RJ stated that we knew what Finn wanted to do and who he wanted to see as he is carrying his backpack in the final cut, but here it shows a hologram recording of unconscious Finn being kissed on the forehead by Rey. BB-8 recorded this and now makes me want to rewatch TFA to see if BB-8 was even there when that moment happened. While I wanted this scene to remain, it's also disappointing, that this actually advances Finn and Rey as a friendship/relationship/characters, but then Finn gets thrown in to the Rose arc. I feel like if this had been included, it would have been a distraction to that Finn and Rose story, despite how much more I am interested in Rey and Finn.

The Caretaker sizes up Rey: I wanted to see more takers as this would have helped the world building aspect. It was only a shot of the caretaker talking to Rey after she accidentally blasted their hut. They kid of my reminded me of older Italian women in a kitchen cooking getting mad! lol. The animatronics looked great as well as RJ points out.

Caretaker Village Sequence: The third lesson...probably my favorite for various reasons, more MH, more animatronics with world building. It was a great scene. I loved Chewie and R2 there at the party to. Chewie was holding up a fish he was eating to show Rey he had moved on from Porgs. Haha. But the talk with Rey and Luke at the party kind of made the scene more darker than it needed to be, especially after the comical entrance by Rey to the party. RJ said pacing issues were the reason it got cut but they went back and forth with deciding to keep it or not. I personally would have kept it just because. Also, I don't recall in this scene Luke saying that this was Rey's third lesson. Makes you wonder if the third lesson is actually being saved for 9. But this was still a lesson for Rey to control herself.

Extended Fathier Chase: Ugh I didn't like this extended sequence at all. So much unnecessary stuff, but there was some cool creatures which would have resulted in better world building. RJ says, there is a lot of good stuff that was cut out, but it was too much, having to pick your own battles with what belongs there. I appreciate that RJ is aware of losing good stuff in order to keep up with pacing, which I think was more important with this scene, even though I believe the scene itself is still unnecessary in the final cut.

Mega Destroyer Excursion: Extended Version: I liked this one for the fact that there was more scenery with the mega destroyer which would have been great to see in the final version. The stormtroopers coming into the elevator was a nice touch up until the point the stormtrooper started talking to Finn and making a joke about the intense moment. In a way I was glad this was taken out of the final version.

Rose Bites The Hand That Taunts Her: Glad this was taken out. Makes Hux more of a joke than he already is in the movie.

Phasma Squeled Like A Whoop Hog: I wish this was the version included in the final version. Finn calling out Phasma, and Phasma having to kill the troopers who were witnesses makes her character much more awesome. Though I think the physical fight was better in the final version though.

Rose and Finn Go To Where They Belong: Cool visually but not needed.

Chewie and Rey have the falcon: Glad this was taken out. Takes away from the battle of Luke vs Kylo.

The Creatures of Canto Bight: Wow this would have made the casino so much better had we seen all of this broll footage of these characters. Feels like so much work put into nothing.

Wish there was more deleted scenes, but glad we got something rather than nothing for deleted scenes. Glad to see what other people's thoughts were with these scenes and if they should have stayed or not.

I enjoyed the deleted scenes but agreed with their exclusion (with the possible exception of Luke's moment--thought could have easily been included). The Caretaker party looked like a good time.

I don't think there's anything I wish was still in the film, but I like the Finn/ BB8 scene, I like the caretaker scene, the Luke mourning scene (though I can see why they cut it), the Finn & Poe scene, the extended Fathier scene (though I again, I get that it was too long) and the CB aliens. I don't like the Supremacy incursion (though the scene with Tom Hardy is funny enough) or the Chewie and Rey on the Falcon scene. Overall, I think that's a strong set of cut scenes as a feature, but I think they made the right choices in the film.

The Fathier chase does make a bit more sense in the extended scene. Not that it's confusing or anything in the film. The extended scene just shows how they get from one place to the other more clearly. I could have done without the alien butt shot though. :p
