Great 1950s US cars, cigars, rum, t-shirts stencils with his pal Che Guveara, and doing the best he could with what the US had imposed upon his country?

If only he hadn't rounded up homosexuals, tried to end the world in nuclear war, and done so many tyrannical things. If only he'd been willing to give his power back to the people.

I have masses of sympathy and respect for Cuba, but I'll only apologise for Castro up to a point.

True. thank goodness the US government has never repressed homosexuals or got to the brink of ending the world with nuclear war, huh? [face_flag]

I'm no fan of Castro, but I'm no fan of lots of political behaviour.

It is widely accepted US sanctions strengthened Castro, not weaken the regime. Uncle Sam indirectly kept him in power and gave a lightening rod to rally support among the people; Cubans might have revolted in the 80s, like the rest of central and Latin America, if it wasn't for American sanctions.

It only takes 2016 one attempt to kill someone off.

You mean the cigar and rum businesses he illegally seized when he took power?

Certainly not defending the Batista regime. But he was scarcely better.

Castro was a tyrant, so I can't say that this is the worst thing in the world. One thing I will is that I think the people of the left will be too quick to defend him while being too harsh upon Western political leaders they don't like, while people of the right will be to quick to claim he is 'the worst tyrant ever' while not realising he is probably on par with some leaders they'd give some form of a pass. The partisan hypocrisy is pretty evident with this death. He was a dictator, however was probably a bit on the better side as far as dictators go.

Finally, we can focus on the suffering and injustice in Cuba that actually matters.

Does the "both sides are equally bad look how moderate I am" schtick ever get old?

Don't know. How is the "I'm a brainless nimrod schtick" working for you, Vivienne?

Edit: actually, I'm happily married; have two daughters I adore; a job that I enjoy, pays well and allows me hours that mean I can spend ample time with said wife and daughters; a top notch health care system; great ski areas; good friends.

Anything else you'd like to know?

Do you get all your insults from the fifth grade, or only the ones you use on the JCC?

There's not really one mention in that article, and I've now read it, of anything he did that was bad. It's basically a puff-obit. Literally not one mention of "gay" or "homosexual" in the article at all, or anything else.

The closest it comes is this:
Which... lol... yes, that's why there were so many fleeing to Miami...
