The Lightsaber Effects Thread

I just want to say that this:

(NB: "Lightsaber" was a spelling mistake that has since been perpetuated throughout the Star Wars series - the original and proper spelling was "lightsabre"; "sabre" being the correct spelling for such a sword-type weapon. I'm following the new convention of correcting improper Americanisation of spelling!)


from that Gimp site is wrong...

it's a matter of regional graphology.

If you're British it's Sabre

If you're American it's Saber.


Like Centre and Center
Both are correct

Batkins, I like the picture. If I am not mistaken, you can see a bit of the prop blade below your white core, but who cares.

krnbanguboi (wow, I keep remembering your name since you explained what it means), I like your results for the beam effect, but I personally prefer a wider, greater glow myself. Could you do that?

Ah, I consider RvB's a bit better. =)

It has a kind of white haze around the core, which makes it look getting brighter there. Your's is more saturated around the core, which makes it look stronger. But in this shot, the brighter method works better, I suppose.

The sabers flow smoothly so that's cool. The glows are the best yet.

Here is my try at re-creating the Rots ILM glow..

This one isn't too bad, even though the glow throughtout the movie is quite inconsistent anyway.

I think that is exact or very close. The only thing wrong is your glow is a little to large. Great job.

krnbanguboi, I think in the video you've posted, the blades are too blurry. There's gotta be a stronger contrast between the core and the actual glow.

batkins, in your video, I think the glows are about perfect. Keep it up!

CloudofSulfur, I think you need the glow to be cleaner. look at panicatthedisco's picture. The glows are more transparent. Yours is too thick looking. The lightsaber core stands out to much. I don't like gimp and I don't have it so I don't know what to tell you.
