Well, I say there, jolly good shot there, old man...

I loved the new pics, but I just have one comment to make about this competition, and the last one...

The blades are rotoscoped on to what appears to be pretty dark pictures, but I was wondering, how do these methods work on light surfaces?

On of the hardest things that I have had to combat when doing roto, is doing stuff set against a sky, where the glow seems to disappear. Have you guys had problems doing stuff like that with these methods?

That's part of the reason I suggested we do a picture that is not on a pure black background also. Hence the shot from Episode I.

Lightsabers do tend to dissapear the lighter the background is. The glow should only lighten the background behind them, and when the background id bright, it gets funny.

Basically, for it to show up on a light background, a whole different method comes into play in order for you to see the glow. Ideally, one can pick his/her location and keep it dim or suitable for the saber glow to appear impressive on it but in the event that there is a bright background that must be rotoed over, you would probably end up not wanting to use any of our methods as-is since you wouldn't see much of anyhting.

That's Ryan. He wanted to make sure that no matter who wins he would still be in the first place! :D

    lol. :D

Actually, WhisperingDeath, Pixel and Dorkman thought it would be a good pic to work on because it was a decent close-up pic and because of the incredibly blank background; nothing to hide the shape and color of the glow of the sabers.

    Personally I like B.

Yeah, doing a saber on a bright background gave me a headache too. This is the best result I've had with Photoshop using variations on the Ryan/Link technique.

clickie if you care to see

That's funny, I must think opposite than most of you. I thought the even glow of "A" looked the most realistic.

I like choice A the best, but choice C is the most movie-like.

By the way, Clickie for my efforts...

What, suddenly I'm not a finalist??

    Yeah I got that wrong didn't I :)

But it is definately for bragging rights between these three. And so far 'C' has those rights...

The last one was pretty close right up until the end, and people kept on voting right up until the end. For some reason (as you said) this one hasn't really moved for the part four days.

Hands up who thinks 'C' is going to win this one? :)

Just to drag it out for the last two days, anyone care to guess who they think did which clip? Competitiors, don't answer, but it might be fun to see if everyone gets it right (I didn't - I only got one right)

    Dorkman Scott - A
    PixelMagic - B
    Ryan_W - C

    That's my guess.

I chose A because I liked the color of the blue sabre best. i think C was the nicest, and I'll betcha B is the method I use. :p I think that's Ryan's.

Anyhow, I think I'd be thrilled to have any method grace my film. :D

    Good spot Funk :)

    The winner is........

    Ryan Wieber! (c)

    In second place is......

    PixelMagic (b)

and from hero to zero....... :p

    Dorkman Scott (a)

I always though it was a risk Scott, you had everything to lose. Congradulations Ryan, I guess that makes it 1-1 in the great 'saber comps' I wonder what a Saber Penalty Shootout would be?

Actually, as has been said before, they're all very good, and I remember on the last saber competition, there where some really good examples of rotoscoping that only got about four votes, the bar has been pushed really high just lately...

    AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

    NO LENS FLARES!!!!

    PLEASE!!!!!

WHY DO PEOPLE...ahem...why do people insist on putting lens flares on their lightsabers?

The movies didn't have them, and most fan films don't have them. SO WHY???? :_|

Btw, that picture WOULD be pretty good, if it didn't have those big, ugly, lens flares in it.

lol! ok, ok! lol, i'll fix it! Lens flares just kinda... "spice it up" i guess...

oh, and btw, in the movies, the sabers did have a small lens flare when there's a close up on them :p
