Darth College has been winning the battle. Sorry for being late in replying.

Alixxy laughed and shook her head. ?No, I am not. But there are those among the servants who are loyal to us and I merely sent word to him through them.?
Blushing slightly, Obi-Wan grimaced. ?I guess that makes more sense,? he conceded. Qui-Gon laughed softly and then turned back to Alixxy.
And Obi-Wan still doesn't quiet understand how most of the galaxy can get by without the Force.

?Oh, I am,? Obi-Wan answered mournfully. Typical!

Ilbin took a seat on a bench and motioned for them to sit on the one facing him. ?My sister told me that Jedi had come to our world,? he said in a voice that was both excited and curious. ?How wonderful to meet real Jedi Knights.? His eyes were bright with real interest and Obi-Wan felt himself responding to this young man?s genuine, almost childlike, enthusiasm. Yes, I doubt most people they meet are enthusiastic about meeting them.

Ilbin smiled at him. ?It is my life to spend as I see fit, is it not?? Yes, it is. Though it's hard to understand why you want to lose it.

?I am the Living Gift,? Ilbin murmured. ?This existence is an uncomfortable one for me ? one that I?ll not regret leaving behind.?
?We could take you away from here,? Obi-Wan offered. ?You could have a life somewhere else, someplace far from here.?
Ilbin shrugged. ?It is this life that suits me so badly, not this place.?
?You wish to die?? Qui-Gon asked bluntly.
?I wish to move onto the next existence, the World Beyond,? Ilbin answered quietly. ?I want to go home, where I am meant to be.?
And the explanation. I like it, and can understand more now, but it's still hard to accept.

Ilbin leaned forward and touched Obi-Wan?s hands. ?No?you do not understand yet. You know the facts, but you do not truly comprehend,? he admonished gently. ?I am giving up this existence for a better one. Nothing is being taken from me.? I'm glad Ilbin says this, though I doubt Obi-Wan will get it.

Ilbin shook his head in disappointment. ?What is faith? A belief in something we cannot see?cannot prove. We simply?believe.? Good explanation.

?But you?re going to die!? Obi-Wan said, as if Ilbin had not yet grasped the concept.

?I will be transformed,? Ilbin countered. ?From one form to another, that?s all. I give my life back to Shybyta ?my very existence was a gift from her. I merely return it, honoring what she has done for me and my people.? He leaned toward Obi-Wan and put his hands on the Padawan?s shoulders. ?I?m not asking you to understand this, Obi-Wan, just to respect it?respect me.? I love this paragraph. He's trying make Obi-Wan see this is what he truly wants to do, and that no person can change another one's mind just because they don't agree.

Qui-Gon quietly spoke, his voice as reverent as any holy man supplicating the deity he worshipped. ?Honored One,? he said, placing a distinct emphasis on the title, ?we cannot understand your beliefs. We have not been raised in them and they are foreign to us in every way imaginable.? Obi-Wan nodded emphatically. ?However,? he felt Obi-Wan flinch. ?The Jedi do not interfere with the religious beliefs and practices of another ? unless perhaps those practices cause harm to another. But in this case, the only?harm that will be done is to you.? Ilbin opened his mouth, but Qui-Gon motioned for a moment of patience. ?Yes, I know that you do not see it as harm, but you can also understand that the taking of a life is no small matter to us.? Good Gui-Gon!

?Yes, I understand that,? Ilbin answered. ?But this is my life and my choice.?
After a moment?s pause, Qui-Gon nodded. ?So it is,? he said and Ilbin gave a sigh of deep relief.
?Thank you for understanding,? he said simply.
At least Qui-Gon understans the difference.

Whatever might have been said was interrupted by a loud cry on the streets beyond the walls. A guard came rushing into the courtyard, his face flushed with excitement and fear. ?There?s revolt in the

What a conversation! Ilbin is very sincere in his convictions, but I'm with Obi-Wan, a bit squeamish about the whole idea. I can't begin to imagine where you're going to take this. And now there's a revolt! How will that affect the story? Beautifully written.

Jemmiah It's been a plot bunny that's been circling me for a while now... Inspired by some interesting family conversations. :p

Layren Or it might be helpful! [face_whistling]

Healer_Leona I wanted readers to be able to see both sides of this issue, and I hope I'm succeeding in that. :)

Arwen-Jade_Kenobi I think his age alone makes that difficult, and then add to that the fact that he's a very compassionate person... [:D]

Valairy_Scot Thank you! You're such a talented writer yourself that it means a lot to me that you'd enjoy this! :D

KELIA Ilbin has been raised to accept it. We'll have to see how he feels as things get closer. [face_worried]

Gkilkenny To be fair, it IS a hard concept to accept.

rebel_cheese Yes, he's so young. He's got nothing like this in his past to compare it to.

Gina I think all young men are like that! [face_laugh]

Independence1776 Thank you for reading. The concept of sacrifice IS hard to accept, and I wanted it to be. But as you said, I'm using Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon to show both sides of the issue and hopefully that works! :p

Ara-gon Some questions answered in this post. Some not. [face_whistling]

Chapter 6

?Come on,? Qui-Gon said in a rush. ?This is our chance.? He glanced at Obi-Wan, who nodded with understanding.

?Chance?? Ilbin asked, obviously confused.

?To get you out of here,? Obi-Wan replied with a slight smile and then he turned.

The guard gaped at them and opened his mouth to call out a warning, though whether the warning would be heard above the roar coming from the streets was questionable. The Padawan did not take the chance, but landed a skilled blow to the guard?s head, watched him crumple to the ground, and then quickly checked his pulse and made sure that the man was all right. He looked up and gave Qui-Gon a satisfied nod.

Qui-Gon took Ilbin by the arm and began leading him quickly out of the garden. Obi-Wan was already sliding off the priest?s robe and putting it over Ilbin?s shoulders. The young man looked over his shoulder and asked Obi-Wan. ?He?s all right, isn?t he? I don?t want anyone hurt on my account.?

?He?s fine,? Obi-Wan replied with a grin. ?He?s just taking a little nap. I think the poor fellow is tired.?

Obi-Wan thought he heard Qui-Gon give a little snort of laughter but could not be sure.

They proceeded through the larger courtyard, ready to deal with any guards that might try to stop them, but the courtyard was deserted and they could hear the shouted orders coming from the walls. Apparently, the guards were busy trying to keep the rioters out of the compound. That was good news for the Jedi, Qui-Gon mused.

Obi-Wan moved ahead of them, made sure that no unfriendly forces were waiting for them. He heard a soft voice call out. ?Hey!? Turning, he was already reaching for the saber he had taken out of his robe and slipped into a pocket of the loose tunic he wore. His fingers closed around it, concealed by the fabric. ?There?s a small door off in that far corner,? the servant whispered.

?Why should I care?? Obi-Wan asked carefully. He did not want to lead his Master and Ilbin into a trap.

The servant smiled, obviously having a grand time being part of such an exciting event. ?You?re here to help the Living Gift, aren?t you??

When Obi-Wan remained silent, the servant rolled his eyes. ?All right, keep your mouth shut then, see if I care.? Then he pointed in the same direction once more. ?But if you?re smart, you?ll get him out of here fast. If they get in ? and I?m guessing they will,? he said with a jerk of his head toward the street, ?then the Gift might get hurt in the commotion. And that?ll just be the beginning of a lot more trouble.? The servant?s expression grew solemn. ?Take him where he belongs,? he said quietly.

With a curt nod of his head, Obi-Wan turned and went directly to his Master and told him what the servant had said. ?He?s right,? Qui-Gon acknowledged

Awww...that was such a sweet reunion between the siblings! Nothing like a well-timed riot. Poor Obi-Wan, he sees the galaxy through vary jaded eyes for one so young and inexperienced, doesn't he! Love how Qui-Gon had to admonish him gently just as he has done all through the story: you get a real sense of a master/padawan team here, but one that is not the almost equal team seen in TPM. Obi-Wan's still adorably rough around the edges. Best of all I liked this:

Ilbin snorted and shook his head. ?You don?t know?? he asked, and seemed to take delight in knowing something that the Jedi did not.

?Know what?? Obi-Wan asked suspiciously.

?You?ve already met our High Tribal Leader,? Alixxy said, a smile still tugging at her mouth.

?We have?? Qui-Gon asked, and then his expression cleared and he turned toward Zim. He gave a deep bow of respect. ?Greetings, High Tribal Leader,? he said solemnly. Then his eyes shone with amusement. ?Shall we escort you to your city??

Zim returned the bow and smiled. ?That would be kind of you, Master Jedi.?

Bravo! =D=

Good timing is right. I agree with Jem, sweet, yet sad reunion with brother and sister.

I'm glad to see Qui and Obi got Ilbin safely back to the Temple.

I loved the reunion between him and Alixxy, though it starting to look as if she may not be as prepared to lose her brother as she thinks she is.

Wonderful update

Qui-Gon took Ilbin by the arm and began leading him quickly out of the garden. Obi-Wan was already sliding off the priest?s robe and putting it over Ilbin?s shoulders. The young man looked over his shoulder and asked Obi-Wan. ?He?s all right, isn?t he? I don?t want anyone hurt on my account.? And he still cares, even though the man helped hold him prisoner.

?Take him where he belongs,? he said quietly. Listen to the servent, Obi-Wan.

?To your sister,? Obi-Wan answered. ?The Temple should be safe.? Let's hope it is.

?What are you-?? Ilbin began, and then he glanced up and saw his sister standing there. Without another word, the two siblings rushed at each other and Ilbin embraced his sister fiercely. Awww...

The old man shrugged, as if it had been nothing at all. ?These things are quite easy to arrange?.If you know the right people.? *snorts*

?See, I had faith in you Jedi and it was well placed.? Nice to know someone does.

?What now, Master?? Obi-Wan asked, clearly anxious to get away from the planet. He wanted to let these people work out their difficulties on their own. The customs here made his head spin and he was no longer sure of what was right and what was not. For a young man who valued knowing what he did was the right thing, the just thing, the situation here was most uncomfortable. I have the feeling it would be uncomfortable to most people, Obi-Wan.

Ilbin snorted and shook his head. ?You don?t know?? he asked, and seemed to take delight in knowing something that the Jedi did not. Again, most people would do the same, though I have the feeling Ilbin isn't going to be all uppity about it.

?We have?? Qui-Gon asked, and then his expression cleared and he turned toward Zim. He gave a deep bow of respect. ?Greetings, High Tribal Leader,? he said solemnly. Then his eyes shone with amusement. ?Shall we escort you to your city?? [face_laugh]

I love the humor in this chapter. It was a nice break from the serious philosophical stuff. But I know this is only an interlude, and things are going to be difficult once again.

Wonderful job!

?Everything will be all right,? Alixxy promised, though they could all see the sadness in her face. Even if things went exactly as planned from this point on, she was going to lose her brother and best friend. Obi-Wan turned away, feeling very much like an intruder on their private moment of reunion.

Such a bittersweet moment.

And quite a clever plan by Zim. Nice bit of humor at the end, too.

Chapter 7

?Tell me,? Qui-Gon asked with a touch of dry humor. ?Why did you come to the Temple, so close to the danger?? He seemed to find it amusing that the man everyone had been seeking had been right here in the capital the entire time.

Zim?s eyes shone with laughter. ?I prefer to think of it as a very clever move, Master Jedi, one my enemies would not expect. And obviously, they did not. Call it hiding in plain sight, if you must,? he answered. ?Besides, the Temple is the one place they were afraid to search, and because they were quite sure I was hiding in the jungle they gave it nothing more than cursory glance.? He shrugged. ?That was their mistake, not mine. I cannot help it that my ?replacement? was not all that bright.? He seemed please at having delivered that insult, even though the object of his disdain was not present to hear it.

?I bow to your cleverness,? Qui-Gon said, his lips quirking. ?What will happen to those who have tried to replace you??

?They will be judged in a court of law,? Zim answered. ?And if found guilty they will face the maximum punishment,? the old man said wearily.

?What is that?? Obi-Wan asked, his tone suspicious.

?For our people, the most severe punishment is to be separated from those whom Shybyta favors, so the most heinous criminals are banished.? Zim?s eyes were sharp as he noted Obi-Wan?s surprise. ?No, we do not kill criminals.? There was a trace of amusement in his expression.

?Just sacrifice innocents,? Obi-Wan muttered beneath his breath.

?Obi-Wan!? Qui-Gon barked, truly shocked at his Padawan?s comment. ?You will apologize to the Leader.?

Obi-Wan looked at his Master and then at the Leader. ?I am sorry if my words offended you, High Tribal Leader,? the young Jedi said with deference. ?But I cannot help the way I feel.? He glanced at Ilbin and Alixxy, who stood side-by-side. ?I know that both of you believe this is right, and it is part of your religious beliefs, but to me it is wrong. It is the wanton taking of a sentient life.? His expression miserable, the young man looked down at his feet. ?I was trained that all life is sacred and to be preserved. That is part of my beliefs, so you must see how difficult this is for me.?

Ilbin stepped forward and put his hands on Obi-Wan?s shoulders. ?You do not offend us,? the Living Gift said quietly. ?Indeed, I am honored that you would think my life worth preserving.? He smiled. ?But I cannot change what I think is right, nor will I try to change your beliefs. Perhaps we can just learn to respect each other, and try to see things from a different perspective while keeping our own truths in our hearts??

Obi-Wan slowly raised his eyes to meet Ilbin?s gaze. ?I will try to respect your beliefs, but I cannot like them.?

?I do not ask that of you,? Ilbin replied. ?And thank you for trying to respect what we believe.?

Zim watched it all with a slight smile. Obi-Wan looked at him as if expecting a sharp rebuke, but the Leader merely held out his hand and put it over Obi-Wan?s heart. ?You have a noble and generous heart, young one,? he said. ?That is never a fault.?

There was silence for a moment, and then Qui-Gon broke the spell that seemed to hold them all. ?We can escort you back to your home if you

If they honor what he wants, of course, they must stand aside and let him die. He is doing what he thinks is right. I don't know how this is going to turn out but I really liked the way you made Obi-Wan face that he couldn't always make his own beliefs into the beliefs of others.

Very nice chapter! Obi-Wan is so young; Qui-Gon so wise.

Alixxy smiled up at him, brushed back his hair. ?I admit that Alixxeria, High Priestess of Shybyta, fears what will happen if the Living Gift does not go to his Mother in the Ritual,? she said quietly, tears gathering in her eyes. ?But as your sister Alixxy, I fear more what will happen to me when my brother is gone.?

?I won?t be gone,? Ilbin whispered gently. ?Not really, you know that.?

?I believe in the Lands Beyond, and I know you belong to our Mother first,? Alixxy replied. ?But I am weak, and I am selfish.? Her head bent beneath the weight of her conflicting feelings. ?And I am so afraid??

That is the crux of the problem. This shows how "human" the characters are - wanting to do "right" and not clearly sure what the real "right" is. Fantastic.

?We can?t just stand by and watch him die for nothing!? the younger man cried out, his fists clenching at his sides. ?And he?s been raised to think he must die for them! Of course he believes! He?s never known anything else.?

?To him, it is not nothing,? Qui-Gon chided. The expression on Obi-Wan?s face was still hostile, and Qui-Gon repressed a grimace. The boy was so dedicated to serving what he saw as right that he sometimes lost sight of the fact that right was often a matter of perspective.

And who should make the determination? Hopefully, if the sacrifice happens, Obi-Wan can be at peace that the Living Gift was not coerced into the decision.

Very intelligently written chapter!

Turning to his Master, Obi-Wan?s eyes filled with misery. ?We should stand by and watch him die?? His voice was husky with repressed emotion.

?If Ilbin chooses to die, then yes, we stand by and honor his choice.?

?We let him die.?

?Yes, we let him die.?

That made me want to cry. Poor Obi-Wan . . . :_| But as much as I'm inclined to side with Obi, I know that Qui is wiser and is making the right decision . . . or so I hope. Even the wisest of Masters make mistakes . . . [face_worried]

?I bow to your cleverness,? Qui-Gon said, his lips quirking. ?What will happen to those who have tried to replace you?? Those two are truly too much alike.

?Just sacrifice innocents,? Obi-Wan muttered beneath his breath. Obi-Wan....

?Obi-Wan!? Qui-Gon barked, truly shocked at his Padawan?s comment. ?You will apologize to the Leader.?

"Perhaps we can just learn to respect each other, and try to see things from a different perspective while keeping our own truths in our hearts?? *shakes head* Hasn't he been saying that all along? And Obi-Wan still won't listen.

Zim watched it all with a slight smile. Obi-Wan looked at him as if expecting a sharp rebuke, but the Leader merely held out his hand and put it over Obi-Wan?s heart. ?You have a noble and generous heart, young one,? he said. ?That is never a fault.? Good for him.

?That is what I?m afraid of, too,? Ilbin murmured, ?not having you beside me anymore. I?ve never been alone before. You?ve always been there for me, ever since I can remember.? Aww... And I can understand this, far better than their beliefs.

Ilbin looked up at the two Jedi and the High Tribal Leader. ?My sister and I must have some privacy,? he said with great dignity. ?We must pray to Shybyta for wisdom and the gift of her guidance. I?I must have time to?? He shook his head. ?Please understand.? I'm glad that he's actively seeking guidance now.

The boy was so dedicated to serving what he saw as right that he sometimes lost sight of the fact that right was often a matter of perspective. That's our Obi-Wan. But he learns...

?No, but others might not see it that way,? Qui-Gon said. ?It is part of our beliefs that a Jedi should not have any attachments, and so we remove a child from their home and raise them in our ways. The child is too young to make a choice, so the parents and the Jedi make that choice for them. Most Jedi never know anything other than the life of the Order.? I love this parallel. I would not have thought of it.

Obi-Wan?s lipped thinned and the muscles of his shoulder bunched once more with tension. ?So you?re saying we cannot understand his choice, but we must honor it??
?Yes, Obi-Wan, that?s exactly what I?m saying,? the Master replied.
Heartwrenching.
