The London Film Club - A Chat about Films

I haven't had time to go to the flicks for ages I might have some time on Saturday, so okay if there is one film I must see that's on at the moment, what should it be?

 

Either BORAT or... well, if it is only one film this year, that one. If you can stretch to two, and The Departed is still out, that as well.
Casino Royale is pretty good if you fancy a hat-trick.

Quality-wise, no particular order, though The Departed is certainly excellent.

 

Thanks Jase. I don't think Borat is really my taste but I was certainly hoping to see The Departed. I am being swayed to an extent by Casino Royale - it has some good reviews and the feedback generally seems to be positive.

went to see 'the prestige' last night.
what a fantastic film,even though i'd twigged what was going on about a third into into the film...which is odd for me as these things usually fly over my head.
my sister told me about the twist in the sixth sense and i still didn't see it coming when i eventually saw the film...
anyway,what stood out for me on this film was the superb cast... hugh jackman in particular.
what a handsome man.

 

I've just came back from seeing Pan's Labyrinth and it's yet again another great film. It's like two films rolled into one; one being a fantasy film the other a war film. It all ties in very nicely and everything is very well polished and includes some great performances. Can't believe this came from the same director as HellBoy which was (sorry Jamie) pretty poor. This however was a fine piece of work well worth seeing. And to the geeks out there, I saw it at the Odeon Covent Garden and it had a digital projector. I was really surprised by that considering it's a small art house cinema, but the picture quality was fantastic.

I bought Hellboy on DVD when it was a fiver and I regret spending that fiver now. Think of all the other great things I could have got with that fiver....even a five pound fine would have felt sweeter and been a better experience!

 

Hellboy wasn't that bad, much better than things like Elektra and Daredevil.

hellboy was a fine example of an very talented and original and independant film maker playing hollywood against itself.
i'm sure the studio wanted a rollickin' action superhero thriller and ol' potty mouth delivered what they wanted but with enough of his twisted vision to both remain completely faithful to the source material and pleasing to movie houses and the dung for brains movie producers.
my god,man... this is a film to be celebrated!!!

 

Lol! That so brings memories back. I was in Paris for a few days that year and my host took me to the cinema. I sat through Sixth Sense and thought, finally a Bruce Willis movie I actually like. It was a nice story and moving and all that stuff. So we come out of the cinema and my host asks me, 'Did you get the twist?' I was nonplussed, 'What twist?! I thought it was pretty straightforward, etc.' It took him half an hour to explain it to me.

I watched Don recently in the cinema and that had a twist in it too, which I simply didn't get until it was spelled out to me at the end. I can be pretty useless too, in this regard.

 

Went out yesterday and saw The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D.

Then went to work in the evening and saw a screening of Night in the Museum.
I thought it was a lot of fun. Dick van Dyke & Robin Williams were both on top form.
Owen Wilson did well also.

I recommend people go and see it, despite it's "children's film" tag.

I saw The Queen over Christmas and rather liked it. Much better then I thought it would be, although it would have been just as viable as a TV movie/mini-series. Great acting and inspired casting, and you'll always be asking yourself at the back of your mind how close to reality this portrayal is
Good stuff.

So here we are in 2007, and hopefully it'll be another good year for cinema. I predict Spider-man 3 will be the biggest film of the year, and even though it's nearly a year away, I'm starting to look forward to the release of The Golden Compass, the first part of the His Dark Materials trilogy. For me the year will belong to a Mr.Jason Bourne

 

I wish they'd stuck with the book title for the Pullman trilogy and called it Northern Lights. The Golden Compass sounds odd, plus the item in question is not a compass

Still, 2007 looks like a great year for films, there is a great selection to look forward to:

Spider-Man 3.
Live Free or Die Hard.
Shrek the Third.
Transformers.
Ghost Rider.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Mr Bean's Holiday.
Evan Almighty.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

I'm sure there are some I've not included.
And with Star Wars' 30th Anniversary this year I'm sure the proposed 3D versions will be great.

 

There's three films out this month that I am really looking forward to seeing: Flags of our Fathers, Babel and Bobby.

As for the biggest film of the year, could it be POTC3? After all if it keeps to the same high standard as POTC2 there is no reason why it couldn't be number one.

 

we wanted to go and see apocalypto this weekend but were too lazy to leave the house!

 

I'm thinking of seeing Apocalypto after lunch. The local cinema has a cut-price showing at 2pm.

 

I forsee it being crushed by Spider-Man 3 regardless of how good it is.

Mmmmm... what is all the fuss about Spiderman anyway? I didn't like the first film and never saw the second. Was it any better?

 

The second one was better but not a big fan of it still. I'd pick POTC3 over Spiderman 3.

 

Saw Apocalypto earlier. It wasn't bad but I don't recommend it for those who hate violence and blood. I liked it.

 

i shall insist major phennir accompanies me to the picture house for apocalypto,in that case.
