It had already seemed impossible that a whole standard day had passed as Siri sank tiredly onto her bed, trying to let out the stress of the day in an exhalation of breath, when the door swept open and Adi gestured her into the living room. Siri sat up, watching her master through bleary, sleep deprived eyes before stumbling off the bed and into the larger living area.

Her breath caught as she saw Qui Gon Jinn sitting on the sofa, and she threw a panicked glance at Adi. Had he told Adi? Had her promises been in vain?

"Siri" The older master's voice was scratchy as if he had not used it in a long time, or that he didn't trust his voice.

"Obi Wan is in the medcentre, would you like to see him."

The confines of the room shrunk, until Siri was aware of only her breathing which seemed to rattle in her chest. There was only one reason why Qui Gon would ask her to visit Obi Wan, if they hadn't been caught it meant....it meant.....the sentence trailed off into silence. She couldn't wrap her mind around it, but Qui Gon seemed to take her silence as an invitation to keep talking when all Siri wanted to do was throw him out.

"Obi Wan was....injured during a strike against the parliament building we were setting up negotiations, there was a bomb and...."

No, Siri's hearing wasn't getting any better, she could see Qui Gon's lips move but there was no sound, she checked Adi's face but her master didn't seem to be having the same problem. Her brain kept circling back to one thought.

There was only one reason that Qui Gon would come to her in person, instead of letting the grapevine do the work and somehow she doubted that this attackl had made Qui Gon rethink his decision about their relationsip.

    There was only one reason....

"Would you like to say goodbye?"

Suddenly Siri's hearing was perfect again and she swallowed numbly.

"Is it visiting hours?" Even as she said it Siri wanted to smack herself. That was the question she asked, the first thing out of her mouth? She should be demanding answers, How, what when and where the heck was Qui Gon when it was happening.

Qui Gon didn't seem to think her question was strange.

    "Allowences have been made"

She nodded, Qui Gon stood and motioned her forward, she moved without quite knowing how, Qui Gon was beside her, pitching his voice low so that passing Jedi could not overhear, Siri wandered if perhaps the mission had been top secret but then Qui Gon said.

"No one else knows about Obi Wan, he was calling for you...I know it has been a trying year for you but"

But seemed to sum it all up.

She was alone suddenly, Qui Gon was talking lowly to one of the healers but Siri couldn't make out what they were saying.

Here she was alone with Obi Wan, the one thing she had promised herself she would never do.

"He's on his own" she turned to look at Qui Gon who had come to stand beside her, a note of accusation in her voice. "You left him by himself"

    "Siri..."

She would later be aware that it didn't really matter if Obi Wan had been left on his own for that tiny, brief moment, he was beyond caring. Later when tucked into Adi's embrace she would plaintievly repeat that over and over again, and it would make her cry, the way that being alone with him in those last, stretching, aching moments had not.

She hadn't cried then because she had been unable to comprehend that she would never see Obi Wan again, and she later felt anguished and guilty.

She leaned down, resting her esr on his chest to hear the slow rise and fall, wanting to bolster the tiny motion with her own heartbeat but she couldn't.

Words filled her head, apologies, accusations, declerations of love but none past her lips except a small wail cut brokenly short into a sob.

And there was silence. Her whole world became that

Very sad, and the closing sentence was perfect to sum up the entire vignette. Lovely. Great job.
