Ok, first of all I know that these sort of threads are frowned upon, but this one is different. This is based on a real life incident rather than a general on-line "I love this guy" type of thing. This is my way of saying Thank You to Dave.

    Let me give the background.

Last saturday was the FF-UK:M's first birthday meet-up, and I promised that I'd be there. However, I didn't realise how far that promise would take me.

On the way, I'd arranged to go to Leicester to pick up an item from eBay (it was only a 2 min diversion). I got there, paid for and collected the item, packed it in the car and got ready to set off. Unfortunately the car refused to start. I turned the key and nothing. I tried for over 10 mins and still the same. So I rang Mrs H who called the RAC and signed me up as a member there and then. 90 mins later, the guy turned up, and lo and behold the car started as soon as he tried it. Turns out it was a dodgy connection to the starter motor.

So off I set, glad of the fact I set off early so I could still arrive in good time. The journey was going smoothly, as I listened to "Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy" on my in-car MP3 player. However, 7 miles from my destination disaster struck. I started slowing down gradually. I had to pull over to the hard shoulder, and from there I couldn't move. The car just revved. So, I had to call the RAC again - the 2nd time in one day - the same day I joined!

They said they'd be there in 30 mins, and 2 hours later they rolled up. Took him 2 mins to tell me the clutch had gone. He gave me 2 options. Take me to a nearby garage, or tow me home (for an extra charge). It didn't take me long to make a decision. I'd promised I'd go to the meet, so I asked him to tow me to Lord Wiz's house. He said OK.

As we were approaching the house, I was listening to Classic FM, and they were playing (on request) the theme to Star Wars of all things. SO I wound the windows down, and pumped it up to full blast to make a magnificent entrance.

Sadly, everyone had already left to go to the bowling :(

So I was stuck at an unknown house in an unknown city with about 15 mins before the bowling started. So I rang a local Taxi firm, and got a lift to the bowling and arrived just in time. I was literally putting my shoes on when it was my first time to to bowl.

The rest of the day went fine, and so the next day when we all woke up with hangovers, I had to sort out what to do. I was offered another night, but I thought that it might take longer than that to sort out the car, so I took the offer of a lift from Veritasuk to Nottingham train station, and headed back to Lincoln.

This is where Lord-Wiz really took over.

He arranged to find a local garage that could deal with the problem. He rang them to get the car towed to the garage. He kept in constant communication with both them and me to let me know what was going on. He rang me several times on my mobile to get more info, and to keep me appraised of the current situation. Then when it was sorted for me to collect, he arranged to pick me up from Birmingham Train Station, took me back to his house for a 2nd time, and gave me a cup of tea from a multitudinous range of blends, then again took me into Birmingham City Centre during RUSH HOUR!!!!, and then escorted me back to the M6 so I could get home.

The help he gave me was absolutely astounding. He really is a true friend. I'm a member of a lot of boards and no-one (with one exception from another board) has EVER given me that much help. At the end of the day, he doesn't know me from Adam, yet he truly went out of his way to help me out in my hour of need.

So I say to you, Dave, Thank you. I really really appreciate it, and you have an open invitation to the halibut household :)

    shucks.

you went through a lot to get to the meet hal, and i was gutted about what had happened to you. it was your first "proper" meet and for it to go so badly wrong was unreal.

as someone i know just from these boards i have a lot of time and respect for you anyway, but as a member of my chapter, for you to make all that effort to get over here was outstanding in itself, and i couldn't sit by and let your disaster get any worse. i just did what was required in the situation.

i'm just glad that i could have been of help, and i'm glad you made it home in one piece :)

That was great of you Wiz to do that for poor old, Hal.

And NO one else deserves an appreciation thread more than that guy! He got me involved in the Midlands chapter through PM's bugging me to go :p I finally did and haven't really looked back! The best thing I have done since joining this place! :D

Not to mention he has kinda looked out for me since joining, given me a lift home, cooked for me and other members of the SFFG while he let us go back to his house (not for the first time either). Also sent me a text wishing me luck in exams, a text after I lost my nan cheering me up and offered support in person, stuck up for me on this place, sent me PM's on stuff I haven't been sure of, always been approachable and a lot of other things I can't think of at the moment. He has just generally been a kind and great guy to me and I can't speak high enough of him! :D

I'm not been a kiss arse but he is a great guy!!!! I am not suprised he did all that for you Hal cus he rocks and is a great friend! :)

    We love you, Wiz! [face_love]

Hal, I am glad you made it to the meet still regardless of the obsticles.
I have always been under the impression that Wiz was a good guy but this just proves it.
Wiz, you deserve an award mate.
You really are a nice buy through and through.
Gentlemen are a rare breed these days, glad to see there are still a few about still to inspire others.
I hope I do get to meet you one day just to see if you are real or just some sort of myth from the Midlands area.

"I was walking along the road the other night and out of no where this guy pulled me from in front of an oncoming car and when I turned to thank him he was gone.!"

    "Yeah, that'll be Wiz."

"Psssh, I thought that was just a myth?"

    ;)

    For Wiz - =D=

I second all of this. He's a brilliant chap always ready to lend a hand and is always there to listen if you have personal stuff to discuss (he's probably just nosey on that. :p ) He's also a great help for everybody who can't drive. The Wiz Taxi service!!

He's also probably the only Streets fan on the planet that I trust.

the streets are awesome. mike skinner is a lyrical genius. if you can listen to the lyrics of his songs and get over your narrow minded "oh they're crap" frame of mind, they are brilliant. there is a song off the new album (the hardest way to make a living) called "never went to church" that reduces me to tears everytime i hear it. the song is about his dad dying and the chorus is humbling. i won't hear a bad word about the streets [face_not_talking]

hal, i have just about every type of music on my pc, and bear in mind that i wasn't the dj for the night ;) . martin was dancing like my dad to some of the music that was playing :p . i have tunes that would make even mustafar happy to listen to (and that's no mean feat ;) :p )

all of this is irrelavent though. i came to these boards not knowing what to expect. i certainly didn't expect to meet a group of people that i am proud to call friends. there are people here that i haven't met and yet i get on with them like they are family (you know who you are ;) ) and when i do meet those people the night will be a very drunken one. the group of people who began life as the midlands chapter and have grown into the sffg are some of the best people you could want to meet, and i would help them all out without a second thought. i cannot stand by and watch those people suffer when i can do something to help, even if i didn't know them from adam. jon, i felt sometimes that i was pissing you off pestering you to come to meets and such, and i am glad that you have enjoyed our company up to this point, and there will be many many meets in the future ;)

anyway, enough of all this sentimental mushy crap. i hate being sickly sweet with my posts ;) :p .

    leave the streets alone :p

EDIT: tom i would have kicked your ass and had you banned :p :p ;)

That is why I am meh about him, he's a brummie singing in a cockney accent. And I agree some lyrics are very moving, whilst some songs are meh, just meh.

*coughs at sickly sweet jibe* You do realise I know what you are on about? It stops please. Do that for a friend will you?
