Nothing much. I was outside, managed to finish "Peter Pan" because Rosie's not here, and I ordered 12 Pratchett books plus "Master & Margarita" at Amazon.co.uk. And now I'm having my favourite rum/coke.

It's cool you could recommend those books, otherwise I might not have heard about them, or might not have checked them out.

 

Same here! I'm up to the wedding chapter in Mulisch's book. It's really good!

 

There's a lot I could tell you about that book and about Mulisch. I'm a big fan, got all his works, which is quite a lot.

What do you think of Onno?

 

Onno is... he's very hard to describe. In some cases he acts like the typical man, but sometimes he's so abrasive it's funny.

 

He is based on Mulisch's best friend Jan Hein Donner, who was a famous chess player. He once wrote a book on Mulisch called "Harry Mulisch, I presume?" And Max is Mulisch himself -- the trip to Cuba and things like that have all really happened.

But I won't reveal too much of what's real and what's what because that might spoil it a bit, maybe.

 

Ah, I see! That sounds interesting! You'll have to fill me in on all the details after I've finished the book.

He turned 75 last July, and for the occasion they published a little book called "The Spark", written in the 70s but eventually it would become "The Discovery Of Heaven". Interesting little thing.

Is there a photo of Mulisch on the back?


EDIT: I did, yes. I just love the quote. I mean, it's an old joke, but I could just see some kind of old wizard getting zapped, which is hilarious.

Oh, well not really. Just got really tired all of a sudden and had to take a quick nap.

I saw that Peter Sellers documentary last night, Tom. Great stuff.

 

Oh man, I have to see it, I hope they release it on video or something. I bet I'll at least be able to order it.

 

It had all these obscure home videos of him.

In one, he imitated Alec Guinness -- spookily real. The voice was just spot-on.

It's a pity he didn't do too many great roles, but self-destructively opted for those Pink Panthers instead.

 

Yeah, that's kind of strange. Of course he is great in those movies however silly they are, or The Magic Christian, have you seen that one? I love that movie.

 

Yeah, I've seen it once. With Ringo as his little sidekick, Sellers as Guy Grand. He's worthwile in every film.

Have you read the biography on him by Roger Lewis? Best book on him there is.

And hey, hear "Every Grain Of Sand" here. One of my favourite songs of all time. Do you know it?

I think my favorite part of the Magic Christian is when out of nowhere Yul Brynner does a song and dance routine in drag. I'va always been sort of fascinated with Yul Brynner for some reason. But it's just classic... Yul Brynner is lip syncing this song sung by some sultry lady and this business man type guy is getting super turned on, then at the end he takes off his wig to reveal his bald head. The business man shreiks in horror, "Oh no!" Then Yul utters his only line of the movie, "Oh yes!"

We're off to grab dinner, back in a bit...
