All right, you've undoubtedly noticed that for the last two years, we have been discussing, on and off, the Move i.e. the migration from the boards hosted by IGN to a new website. Initially vbulletin, we're going with Xenforo. IGN have been snowed with their other million boards while doing the same, and as such various facilities have been stopped e.g. password recovery, and the access of new users.

Or you may not have noticed, and this is the first you've heard of it, at which point I'd recommend you read this thread here, in Communications.

    The Jist

Here's what IGN is going to do: IGN is planning to export our forum data at some point in the coming weeks. We have not yet decided on an exact date.
Here's the effect it will have: The JC is about to undergo a major upgrade. After the move, all the current glitches like new user registrations and email notifications will finally work again.
Here's how you'll get to the temp board: Once the boards are officially shut down for the move, boards.theforce.net will automatically forward you to the temp board.
Here's how the temp board will work: This will basically just be a place to hang out until the move has been completed. The temp board is going to be a brand new board - nothing from this board is going to be transferred to it, which means you will have to register a new temporary account in order to post. No threads or posts will be transferred either. After the move is completed, the temp board will be shut down.
Here's how the conversion will work and how long we expect it to take: IGN will be exporting all the data from this forum and converting it into a database compatible with Xenforo. They will then mail us the data on a hard drive, which will then be imported into the new board set up on TFN's servers. We expect it to take somewhere between 1 to 3 weeks, depending on how long each step of the process takes to complete.
Here's how the boards will go back up again: When the move has been completed and we've had the chance to verify the import process, boards.theforce.net will automatically switch over to the new board.
Here's what you can expect when the new board opens: Your password will not be transferred, so in order to log in for the first time, you will need to have your password emailed to you via the email associated with your account.

    The Buddy System

A nifty little idea suggested by a user named s65horsey is that you find yourself a buddy for the move. Know someone who doesn't post as often as you? Then contact them, and update them when everything happens. Know someone who hasn't settled in quite yet? Ask them if they need a hand. Just want to play-out the novelty of a summer holiday/move online? Go for it. I'll be adding a line to my signature to state who I'm buddied with.

You're more than welcome to grab more than one moving buddy, if you're that popular.

Or, of course, you can go solo and do it by the seat-of-your-pants. Or, join the board's Facebook page. Which works too. :p

    Questions Asked Elsewhere

What do you need me do?

Nothing, per se, just to keep an eye out and grab yourself a Buddy, like suggested above.

So just so I've got this right: when the new boards (not the temp boards) come up, a new password will be automatically sent to the account I specified while I was still on these boards?

The password will not be automatically sent. You will have to initiate the password recovery when you attempt to log in for the first time. (More in-depth details on how this process will work will be provided in the near future once we've had a chance to test out the process for ourselves.)

    Can I Help?

If you have particular technical expertise, please, PM Grimby (the head admin) and introduce yourself. There may be something the tech guys need some help with, so any contribution you can make would be delightful.

    If you're less technica

whats to stop somebody registering as say, daft and pretending to be him?

what happens if you don't have a working e-mail address? I suppose i'd best make one up

All sounds a bit of a headache if you ask me, but, I won't complain if the temp board can have uit';s own Charn city cantina O:)

We'll be on the look out for those kind of things. If you're suspicious of any foul play (or your account has been stolen) please contact your Mod (who will still be me, incidentally). But I imagine there are very, very few users who would do that so hopefully it doesn't happen. If it does, the punishments will be severely harsh, and we'll know by way of your IP Address (which we can check) if you're not the right one. I'll be taking down IP Addresses of all the users in the SWC to compare, as it is.

And I imagine the CCC will remain as is, name-wise. :p

Thanks for the detailed information Sinre it sounds very straight forward.

Do you feel it's necessary to back up all threads, or just the active ones, or just the ones we like? :p

    I think I could do that...maybe...possibly.

Umm...ok so....where all back now? I seem to be missing a lot of my stats...the starts near my name are gone...how do I get them back? I am most certainly not a "jedi youngling" I had 4 starts before the move...?

they're probably still messing around with things

if I'm not mistaken, the change in your rank isn't with the amount of posts but with how many trophies you received

Post counts are getting transferred other, and the system is slowly updating, so we should be updated soon. Further issues, head to Communications as there is a place to enquire.

How do I get my stars back? They still aren't showing up, is it something I need to do or what?

I found that my stars appeared after I'd been logged in for a long while. I suggest trying to stay logged in for as long as possible (several hours)- that seems to nudge the system into remembering that they exist.

    EDIT:
You'll have to keep posting every so often if you do this; the system does seem to automatically log you out after a long period of inactivity.
