There semm to be a lot of musicians in our little family, so I figured we could come here to discuss music stuff. (Those that aren't musicians can post here in worship! ;))

Guitarists: Who is your favorite guitarist (besides yourself :p) and favorite solo? Mine is Nuno Bettencort (formerly of Extreme) and my favorite solo is also by Extreme in the song Play With Me.

Y'know, I was thinking of starting a very similar thread.

    Favorite Guitarist(s)

David Gilmour from Pink Floyd, and
Warren Haynes from Gov't Mule/Allman Bros. Band/Phil Lesh and Friends. (Busy man)

My favorite solo is from Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd.

ALSO - What is your favorite piece(s) of gear?

Ken, I could answer your question about me being ok, but that would be off-topic here.

I like bands. I don't necessarily go for one specific person of the band, and Mark was the first to pop into my mind. I really liked the band Creed (although a LOT of people didn't like them), and I thought he did very well in it.

My favorite bands consist of Queen, Van Halen, that kind of stuff. But since they all play so well, it's hard for me to pick a fav. So, I listed one off the top of my head.

The best guitarist, hands down is Jimmy Page. Eddie Van Halen is probably the most skilled guitarist ever. A couple of extremely underrated guitarists are Randy Rhoads (played for Ozzy in the 80s) and Tom Morrello (played for Rage Against the Machine).
If you've ever heard some of the stuff Rhoads did outside of his stuff with Ozzy, you'll know what I'm talking about. Many of his solos and even main riffs have classical progressions in them. He was actually planning on leaving the music industry to study classical guitar before he died in a plane crash. There's a nice little history lesson, kids.

One of my best friends says that Hendrix is the best. I totally disagree. He did some stuff that, at the time, nobody else was doing. That's revolutionary, but it doesn't make him a great guitarist.

As far as favorite solos, my two favorites ever are in Jump and Stairway to Heaven. I cannot play either one all the way through. Just little bits and pieces.

Edit: Mark Tremonti is actually a good guitarist, but there's no way I'd ever classify him as one of the greats.

My fav guitarists: Phil Collen/Steve Clark from Def Leppard, Brian May, Eddie Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Prince, Gary Hoey.

Fav gear: I'd love to get a Jackson PC-1 or a decent Les Paul.

Fav solo: the outro Vivian Campbell does for "Love Bites" live.
"The Green Room" from Hoey is one of my fav instrumental pieces ever.

Bass- Les Claypool, Flea, Stu Hamm

Drummer-Gregg Bissonette or the guy from Slipknot. :p

    Hardly anyone gives Prince credit.

Yeah, I think that's because they let his image & his whole symbol as a name thing get in the way. But for me, the Purple Rain stuff sealed it as him being one of my fav artists.

And while I don't listen for the bass & drums quite as much, I think Stu Hamm did some great work with Satrianni. And Rick Allen is a great drummer, especially since he has returned to the "accoustic" drum kits. (Yes, I do have a bit of a Def Lep bias...lol)

I having a hard time picking guitarists. I agree, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Randy Rhodes, and Jimi Hendrix are all great guitarists.

Also want to throw in Eric Clapton, Steve Howe, Steve Hackett, and B.B. King. Cause none of these are anything short of genius!

None can top celloists Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, and Perttu Kivilaakso. :D
I lost faith in modern rock music a while back, I don't listen to the radio anymore, so I find stuff that is more my style. No bad lyrics (cursing OR poorly written, one doesn't top the other), no lame sounds, etc. Movie soundtracks and cello rock are for me. And older bands, the good bands.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is good too, btw, as well as The Beatles, and Metallica (don't care for much of their lyrics though, the guitars just sound cool. Prince's guitar stuff is ok, I just don't like the sound of his voice. My parents like him a lot. Oh yeah, STYX is good too. And E.L.O.

I haven't heard him do anything aside from Ozzy except Quiet Riot? Did I release other stuff?

I totally forgot to mention my favotite drummer right now. Arthur Latin II (Harry Connick, Jr.) He is AMAZING!!!!

Are you really Randy Rhoads? Your confusing me. First your were a guy, then a 60 year old lady, and now Randy Rhoads.

Maybe you should seek psychiatric help. [face_worried] ;)

KOB - I'm sorry man, but I don't get half the stuff on here. Are you talking about a high school band, or a rock show. The ones I really don't understand are under the bass guitar categories. No sweating? Not allowed to be audible? No fretless bass guitar?.

Where did you get this list?
    "Mr. Uptight's House of Boredom"?

It's just a joke playing on the stereotypes of certain band members. The more you play out (and the more bands you play in), the more you get it... :p
