Kind of an ugly weekend in Boston sports...the Bruins had their 10 game winning streak (and 14 @ home) snapped, the Celtics played perhaps their worst game of the season @ MSG against the Knicks, and no Patriots in the NFL playoffs. At least the BC men's basketball team pulled off the upset against #1 North Carolina at the "Dean Dome."

Also, the Patriots will be losing the man who called the plays for the most prolific offense in history, as offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has agreed to a 4-year deal to become head coach of the Denver Broncos.

Just a round-up of the major things that have happened with the local teams the last few weeks...

Bruins: Three Bruin players will be in Montreal this weekend representing the Eastern Conference in the NHL All-Star Game: D Zdeno Chara (a starter), G Tim Thomas, and F Marc Savard. Also, as the coach of the team with the Eastern Conference's best record at the halfway point of the season, Bruins head coach Claude Julien will have the honor of coaching the Eastern Conference All-Stars.

Celtics: F Kevin Garnett was voted a starter for the Eastern Conference in the NBA All-Star Game, which will take place on Feb. 15 in Phoenix. Garnett joins Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic, Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat, LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Allen Iverson of the Detroit Pistons.

Patriots: VP of Player Personnel Scott Pioli was hired as GM of the Kansas City Chiefs, ending a very memorable partnership with head coach Bill Belichick. Director of Player Personnel Tom Casoli has moved into Pioli's former position.

Wide receivers coach Bill O'Brien was named as Josh McDaniels' replacement as quarterbacks coach. O'Brien will also assume some of McDaniels' old duties as offensive coordinator, but it is expected that head coach Bill Belichick will call most of the offensive plays in 2009.

QB Matt Cassel said in a recent interview on Comcast Sports Net that he would be willing to accept his old backup role with the Patriots, but that the team hasn't discussed a possible franchising with him yet.

Red Sox: 1B Kevin Youkilis signed a 4-year, $40M extension, keeping him with the Red Sox through the 2012 season. The deal also includes a fifth-year club option. The Sox have also avoided arbitration with closer Jonathan Papelbon, signing him to a one-year, $6.25M deal, the highest salary ever for an arbitration-eligible reliever.

Pitchers and catchers report to Ft. Myers in 20 days. :D

An erratum from my last post...the name of the person replacing Scott Pioli as VP of Player Personnel for the Patriots is Nick Caserio, not Tom Casoli.

Bruins forward Marc Savard had three assists and goaltender Tim Thomas earned the win with 2 saves in the shootout in the Eastern Conference's 12-11 win in last night's NHL All-Star Game. Unfortunately, Montreal Canadiens forward Alexei Kovalev played hometown hero by potting the game-winner in the shootout and was named the game's MVP.

According to multiple published reports, the Bruins have won the right to host the 2010 NHL Winter Classic on New Year's Day at Fenway Park. The Bruins' opponent had yet to be named, but the Montreal Canadiens and the New York Rangers appear to be the two most likely ones.

Congrats to the Boston University Terrier hockey team, as they defeated Miami (Ohio) 4-3 in overtime last night in DC to win the NCAA men's ice hockey national championship, their 5th title overall and 1st since 1995. The game featured an improbable comeback by the Terriers, as they scored 2 goals in the final minute to force overtime, with Colby Cohen scoring the game-winner 11:37 into the extra period.

Bruins sweep the dreaded Habs in the first round of the playoffs, the Red Sox take a 7-game winning streak into the first series against the Yanks, and the Celtics are having trouble with the Bulls without Kevin Garnett in the lineup...oh well, two out of three ain't bad. :)

In a move that the Red Sox hope links their past to their future, the club drafted St. John's Prep outfielder Michael Yastrzemski, grandson of Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski, today in the 36th round.
