After a weekend series which saw the Red Sox break a 9-game losing streak @ Safeco Field and win their first series in Seattle since 1999, the team heads to Anaheim for a 3-game series with the Angels. Curt Schilling (6-4, 4.20 ERA) comes off of the DL to make the start for the Sox tonight, and will be opposed by the Angels' Jered Weaver (7-5, 3.68 ERA).

In a move that may (and that's a very big "may") upgrade the outfield situation, the Red Sox signed Bobby Kielty to a minor league contract. Kielty hit .200 in 13 games for the Oakland A's this season, but spent significant time on the disabled list with a meniscus tear in his left knee. He may be an upgrade b/c his numbers last season were .270/8/36...with the exception of the RBIs, better than what J.D. Drew and Wily Mo Peña have been doing this year. The plan is to get Kielty some at-bats in Pawtucket with the hope he can join the big club when he can prove he's ready to play.

The Patriots have reportedly acquired CB Dante Wesley from the Chicago Bears for a conditional draft pick. A new player was spotted wearing #38 in practice today, which is assumed to be Wesley. The new pickup adds depth to the defensive back situation, and Wesley also figures to be a contributor on special teams.

Don't look now...after a couple of losses to the Angels and a couple of Yankee wins in Toronto, the Sox' AL East lead is now only 5 games. :(

And Barry Bonds hitting a record setting HR last night?

Ugh.... what a sad day for sports!

(Sorry, no support for Bonds here, as you all know.)

Patriots owner Robert Kraft and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA), which governs high school sports in the Commonwealth, have entered into an agreement to play the Eastern Mass. Super Bowls at Gillette Stadium through at least 2009, with the kickoff of the agreement set to play this year on Dec. 1. Six of the seven Eastern Mass. divisions will play at Gillette Stadium, with the seventh division rotating annually.

With the tight end position thin due to injuries to David Thomas (on the PUP list), Kyle Brady, and Benjamin Watson (the latter two injured in training camp), the Patriots yesterday signed Marcellus Rivers, who last appeared in a game for the Houston Texans in 2005 and was also with the Raiders (in training camp) and Saints (for a few weeks in December) last year without getting into a game. Rivers was at yesterday's second practice and will be with the team for the preseason opener in Tampa Bay tomorrow night.

The Celtics may not be done making major moves even with Kevin Garnett now in the fold, as a report published by the Globe indicates that the C's are now talking to long-time Indiana Pacers All-Star Reggie Miller about coming out of retirement.

And, oh by the way, with a Sox win in Anaheim last night and a Yankees loss in Toronto, the AL East lead is now back up to 6 games.

WEEI has reported that the Red Sox will open the 2008 season with a pair of games in Japan. Oakland and Seattle are likely opponents, and the Yankees are also a possibility. After playing in Japan, the Sox will complete a west coast road trip before returning home.

Congratulations to the Walpole American Little League, as they defeated Shelton, CT 14-4 yesterday in the title game of the New England regional tournament. Walpole will now be the first team from Massachusetts to represent New England in the Little League World Series since Saugus in 2003.

Good luck in Williamsport, Walpole! :D

Unfortunately, you are right about that.....

However, we can rename him GAG-MAN.... right?

I know that if he shows his face tomorrow night while I am at the game he will get some jeers from me - and I am going to be seated near the bull pen too!

    What was Theo thinking?

Come on now... Gagne will be fine. Granted he blew it this weekend (twice ), but if you take away what happened this weekend he's still one of the best in the AL. Give him a chance to adjust to his new role as a setup guy and he'll be a major asset to the bullpen come the end of September. You'll see...

Well, as it turns out, I won't be going to the game anyhow.

I read an interesting article about Gagne this morning. Basically saying that when he adjusts, he will be just fine.

Guess I expected too much of him by expecting him to be on his game upon arrival but, wait... his ERA was low before then anyhow.

I don't know what to think about the guy. =)

Nice little come-from-behind win last night, which was made all the better by the urgency made by the Orioles spanking the Yankees. And Gagne did not GAG, either, getting the win while striking out the side in the 9th inning. :D

The Patriots will have a new punter in 2007, as the team released veteran Josh Miller today, leaving only rookies Danny Baugher and Tom Malone to battle for the job. Both Baugher and Malone were members of the practice squad last year, and both were allocated to NFL Europa this past season. Baugher is considered the favorite to win the job, though the gap is not considered significant enough that it can't be closed through the remainder of training camp and the preseason.

The Red Sox announced that right-handed pitching prospect Clay Buchholtz will be called up from Pawtucket and make his major league debut by starting the afternoon game of tomorrow's day/night doubleheader against the Angels. A roster spot will have to be created for Buchholtz, and it is widely speculated that outfielder Wily Mo Peña will be either traded or designated for assignment to open the spot. It has also been reported that Jacoby Ellsbury will be in Boston tomorrow, and will take a spot on the roster when Buchholtz is optioned back to Pawtucket following the afternoon start. Ellsbury is not expected to stay long, as Bobby Kielty is reportedly almost ready to join the Red Sox.

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network reported that Patriots DL Ty Warren has signed a contract extension that will take him through 2011. According to NFLPA calculations, the deal contains $18M in guarantees, and reportedly has a total value of $35M.

The Sox got about as much as they could've expected out of Clay Buchholz, as he went 6 innings, giving up 4 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits while striking out 5 in picking up the win in the 8-4 afternoon game of the day/night doubleheader against the Angels. All did not go according to plan today, as the Red Sox had to revise their plan of calling up Jacoby Ellsbury for the night game after backup catcher Doug Mirabelli strained his right calf running the bases in the first inning. As a result, Kevin Cash has been called on a flight from Ottawa, where the PawSox are playing, and should join the team in time for the night game. Cash needs to be added to the 40-man roster, and the expected move is Brendan Donnelly being transferred from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL.

    A Willy Mo Pena update....

At 1:19, the team made an announcement, a trade presumably consummated before the game's first pitch. Wily Mo Pena, who cleared waivers, had been traded to the Washington Nationals with cash considerations for a player to be named later, thus ending the 25-year-old outfielder's short-lived career in Boston.

Update on the post-game roster moves...

Doug Mirabelli has been placed on the 15-day DL with a right calf strain and will be replaced by C Kevin Cash, whose contract was purchased from Pawtucket. Clay Buchholz was optioned to Pawtucket after the first game, as expected, and OF Jacoby Ellsbury has been called up from Pawtucket; Ellsbury will lead off and play center field in the night game.

The good news is that Kevin Cash has experience catching the knuckleball, as he caught PawSox knuckleballer Charlie Zink twice in the last month. Cash will likely start on Monday in Tampa Bay, catching Tim Wakefield. Earlier in the day, the Red Sox announced that Julian Tavarez will make a spot start on Sunday against the Angels.

Walpole defeated West Side (Hamilton, OH) 3-2 in the first game of the Little League World Series today, and the game was not short on dramatics. Walpole rallied from a 1-0 deficit by scoring their 3 runs in the top of the 6th inning (the last regulation inning in Little League), then Walpole center fielder Mike Rando robbed West Side's John Cornett of a certain game-winning home run to end it. Walpole manager Brian Oberacker admitted to being worried about Cornett, who hit 4 homers in the Great Lakes regional.

"Big Papi" showed he's still got it, as he hit a 5th inning grand slam that put the Red Sox in the lead and eventually proved to be the game-winner last night in a 10-5 win over the Angels. While Curt Schilling continued to struggle, he did last 6 innings and picked up the win.

Walpole had a chance to tie or win again in the 6th inning in yesterday's Little League World Series game against Lake Oswego, OR, having runners on first and second with two out, but Lake Oswego induced a game-ending fielder's choice, preserving a 1-0 win. All four Pool A teams are now 1-1, and the Walpole Americans play Warner Robins, GA tonight.
