I wrote a dark Yoda story once and it was amazing how many problems with the storyline were fixed by Dark Yoda I finally had to stop the story it was freaking me out.

does anyone have any theories on the dark-side cave and why Yoda set up camp near there?

EU or personal opinions are appreciated

 

I know the EU has a lot to say about it, but I'll let someone more informed explain all that.

My personal fanon has always been that Dagobah is an "enchanted" world where pockets of the dark side (and the light) are relatively common. The cave in ESB is therefore just Yoda's local dark side feature, not something unique caused by a specific event. Is it established in the films how near the cave is to Yoda's hut? I always figured it was within several miles, but not necessarily next door.
When I was young (before the PT, or even TTT), I believed Yoda had used the cave in training other Jedi, but I've willingly jettisoned that part of my theory in light of the PT.

I know this goes against pretty much everything said in the EU, but I'm sticking to it.

The cave is, I believe, an excavation that leads to an entrance of a dark side temple that has been buried for many millennia.
