Thyferra Spaceport, Planetary Surface, Thyferra

The harbourmaster nodded gravely as Kynyard explained his reasons for not contacting Thyferra's planetary security. His eyes flickered over the displays, taking note of the Imperial vessels that were currently docked. There weren't many, apart from a few large freighters. There was no sign of Imperial military craft either, which was odd. If he checked the manifests of the last couple of days he'd find similar results. The way things appeared, apart from a shipments of supplies (most probably bacta), the Empire seemed to hold little in the way of spacecraft on-planet. Would the Empire really leave such a valuable world untouched?

I'm glad you allowed me to post the shipping records. You are correct in that I have ... ideas.

Leaning over to whisper into Leia's ear, Korgrim muttered, "Not that I know anything about politics, but I have to agree with Ceon." The Vice President did not respond, as her words would surely be seen, if not heard. Instead, she nodded slightly, to recognise Korgrim's opinion. Anyone who noticed would merely think that she had nodded as she actively listened to the diplomatic proceedings.

One of the representatives, who had been quiet up until this point, decided to speak up. "Fellow delegates," he began, "please consider the practical approach of Dersk Brey'la. Neither Mon Calamari or New Alderaan would make an ideal base of operations. As you have already pointed out, Mon Calamari is too well known, and too likely a target to be declared our capital. New Alderaan, on the other hand, is unestablished. Surely you are aware of our shortage of funds, especially with the development of our fleets and current territories. The construction of a capital in the Unknown Regions is simply too costly for our time and other resources, not the least of which are our finances. There is also the matter of the dangers that are reported to be present within those regions of space."

He paused for a few moments, knowing that some would be brooding over his words, but before anyone could voice objection, he pressed on. "Since we all recognise the value of Mon Calamari as a military base, I propose that this region of the Outer Rim be further explored. Several planets may pose as having the potential for our capital. Munto Codru and Toong'l for example, and also, Lianna and Dellatt, which are located within the Tion Cluster. Each of these worlds is well away from the Imperial-controlled Core, and near enough to be used to expand the territory around Mon Calamari. And there is also Belderone, which is located along the Prelemian Trade Route. Perhaps we should investigate these planets, and report our findings at the next meeting?" If the others agreed, then the meeting could be called to its end, and the respective diplomats be given a chance to conduct investigations.

Jemile was handed her cup of caf, which she received with pleasure. When she turned to leave the bar, she stopped before the face of an old friend, and fellow commander, Ace Caine. "If I could borrow a few moments of your time," Ace said politely, "I am heading over to speak with Captain Zachian of his plans for Blade Squadron. Perhaps he has something in mind for Yellow Squadron too." He waited for her response, before he made his way over to the Mon Calamari Captain's quarters and requested an audience.

"Hello, brother. It's been a while." he said to A-kaz.

In a moment, her descision was made. "Lt. Jo-Ni Shawa. This is my wingman, Co-Lysard. Please, sit. If you're A-kaz's brother, I want to hear imbarassing things about his childhood."

Cray suddenly found himself istting on the bridge of a starship, the viewer filled with the scean of a starscape. A simulated crew ran about, doing what looked to be their normal duties, while a screen on the chair Cray sat at's right hand was beeping. Looking down at it he saw what appeared to be his orders.

"Commander Cray Mathon, you are to return to base immediately and break off your mission." That was the extent of the message provided. Belwo it was what appeared to be a Map of the galaxy, showing his current position, the position of the base, as well as the position of the Imperial/Republic border. A section of Imperial Space was between Cray's position and the base. He would either have to take a detour around it,which would add days to his travel time, or cross though it, to reach the base.

We'll start out fairly simply, but it won't stay that way, you may be sure of that.

    Ulim Fyar; New Republic Senate

?There is wisdom in words, but is there wisdom in our words?? Ulim asked, the Core heavy on his tongue, rather silently, even more so innocently, from the far side of the room (a seat of relatively insignificant power or status). Only in such a body as the Republic would he have any room to consider speaking at all.

?There is no precedent for establishing an ersatz capital on a world that we alone hold dominance over?not merely militarily but completely from the knowledge of the galaxy. If we hold the coordinates to New Alderaan then it should become a castle, not a capital, and not a counterfeit at that. This subterfuge will be seen for what it is, a simple scam. Then where will that leave the New Republic? Of this, there is no need. We require stability first, stratagems of deceit second, especially to the wants of a beleaguered people, a besieged people, a people in need of strong government before the groundswell of the Galactic Empire. And so I most humbly suggest to the representatives of the free worlds of the New Republic that we begin construction of Senatorial facilities on not the planet of Mon Calamari but on a ship of Mon Calamari?at least in the temporary.

?We must not forget the war we have already fought. Before the beast of Empire we will ebb and fail if we become as they are: stranded on ritual, adrift on proclamations, and marooned on a quiescent island we cannot set sail from. We must remember the decency of mobility and the suitability of fluidity. Without these Rebellion would have been aborted and we would not be here today to discuss artificial capitals and Impression Acts. Without remembering the lessons of Rebellion the Republic will find its ruin.?

Without another word, he announced himself for the speaker, informing the Captain of his desire to meet with him.

DarthSeti5, completely understandable. I know what that can be like ;) I have a quick OOC for you ... do you truly think a mobile base is a good idea (for our capital)? I'm just curious I guess, and you don't have to answer if you don't want to.

I'll make an update in there accordingly, feel free to reply once it is up. I do hope it won't be an inconvenience. :)

Gorin_Zachian, in order to eliminate any delays from travel time it seemed best for the Blades to begin on the Watery Depths. Hopefully it won't be any trouble.

Mon Calamari cruiser; NR Senate meeting

Korgrim continued to listen. He considered himself a relatively simple man, and thought that he felt a headache coming on from all the ideas being tossed around. The ideas of Senator Fyar were intriguing, but in the days of the Rebellion there were few enough people for guerilla tactics to work--it would be far more difficult now, with a galactic government at stake, to use such strategies. Still, Fyar had a point about the fact that they needed some sort of interim center of government while more shipyards and such were being established. The Senator who had spoken before Fyar about exploring more of the Outer Rim had raised a good point. While such reconnaisance took place, the Senate would have to be restricted to meeting onboard a mobile base, as Fyar had suggested.

Korgrim realized that his thoughts were going in circles, and decided to stop thinking. He'd leave this all to the bureaucrats--all that mattered was that once a place was chosen, he would be tasked with making it secure for the Vice President to inhabit.

    as Jayden Sarn

Jayden furrowed his brow as the debate began to head onto a cyclic path.

"We had come so close to coming to an agreement," he thought to himself, "These young councillors know little, if anything of experience. He looked at Fyar and the bothan, Brey'la, and realised that both would have been no more than newborn children when he was starting his political career. He also realised that he was becoming impatient. He began aligning all the information in his head - Mon Calamari, the fleets, New Alderaan and the bothans. The matter of funds and resources, and tactics, and alliances, and treaties. The future that lay before them... and the past."

Jayden took the floor again and began pacing back and forwards.

"I would not waste our time and credits exploring the region. What do you hope to gain? Some small insight, a sliver of information unknown to the Empire? For nearly fifty years I have travelled the stars, from the Core to the Outer Rim and back again. If anyone seeks information on the planets in this system then perhaps you could indulge an old man and simply ask me.

"We are agreed that Mon Calamari cannot serve as both a political and military capital. How much better then, is any other planet in this system, or the next? New Alderaan is perfect, no further from the Core than Mon Calamari, and yet, it's location completely unknown to the Empire. The planet itself will provide us with numerous resources, and will most likely self sustain a large enough shipyard to rival even the beautiful watery planet below."

He paused momentarily, scanning the faces of everyone in the room before quickly continuing,

"Of course, I'm sure we have quite enough excess resources to expend on scouring this corner of the galaxy for a planet. No doubt we could send one of our un-needed squadrons off in search of a planet in one of the nearby systems. I'm sure they will relish the challenge."

Jayden paused again, his face was set in a grim smile.

"Or perhaps we could be so bold as to take action now and make the right decision.

"I have great faith in Mon Mothma, but I do not have faith in a peace proposal from the Empire. I do not expect a treaty. We need to expand our forces and New Alderaan IS the key."

"Ah... Mon Mothma... if only she were here, she would agree with me. She can remember the dawn of the Empire. They are too young....

There cannot be peace while the Empire remains."

    Audience Chamber

    [ul]Kair Ceon

Kair sat back in his seat, intrigued by the words of Fyar, Brey'la the other representative who had spoken up.

Did they not understand what the Impression Act was? The young politican that had chosen to speak before Fyar had- a young politician that he did not know- spoke as if the Impression Act was to establish the "actual" capital on New Alderaan- which is what the Act wanted the Imperials to think, for it would actually be a ploy.

Fyar at least understood the half of it- but he seemed to think that the tactics used in the old Rebellion would be best here. Dersk seemed to agree with him a bit- even going as far as to agree with the other politician in the area of further exploring the area around New Alderaan. Kair knew, of course, that Brey'la wasn't agreeing because it was the best course of action- he was agreeing because it best fit into his private plans.

And then there was Jayden, one of the oldest members of the Senate. He seemed to support the Impression Act with his whole heart- not surprising, since he stood to gain much from it-, even going as far as posing his own counter-debate towards Fyar and the other politician before Kair himself finally stood up.

"Mr. Fyar, you bring up some interesting points." he began, standing up. "You propose that we actually move the Senate to a 'ship', in order to provide an aura of safety amongst arguably our highest and most influential government officials, as well as preserve the 'deceny of mobility'.

"You are right that we must not be inattentive to the war that we've already fought- the war that many lost their lives to fight, and many more sacrificed to the ends of their abilities to set up the Republic as it is today.

"But rememberence does not mean we have to relive those times and that war, Mr. Fyar. Moving a hierarchy of revolutionary activist leaders onto a captial-class ship is one thing- moving the basis of a galactic government onto one is another.

"Sure, old Alliance strategy can produce positive results, employing tactics that would provide quite tempting opportunities- for freedom-fighting groups committing acts of terrorism, but not for democratic administrations.

"Alliance tactics are no longer effective, especially in the setting that we are currently in. Whatever ship our Senate would be located on would be the prime target of any attack, and should that ship be destroyed, the New Republic leadership is dead. Attacking a planet, where the Senate- unless convened- would be scattered, along with a fleet and planetary defense systems, is much harder than shooting down a ship full of the enemy's management personnel.

"Mon Calamari is great in the way of a standard government capital- just as New Alderaan is for an ersatz capital that would also double to serve as a military outpost and hold a sizable fleet.

"If you would like to further explore the area, feel free- I support Jayden's suggestion to send a squadron of starfighters to scout the system. However, as Mr. Sarn can assure you, there is hardly much out there around New Alderaan- don't forget that I once was the head of the New Alderaan Commission, and more than once I approved funding to inner and outer system exploration, all missions coming up blank.

"The Impression Act is not something to be taken lightly, I agree. But at the same time, every second that we don't make a decision is a second that the New Republic is without a capital. And the citizens of government- whether it be a tyrannical empire or a dem

    OOC:

After dicussing it with Goran, here's the final draft of my new NR Navy character. :)

    Name: Ridely Bomaar
    Species: Human
    Gender: Male
    Age: 30
    Height: 6'0"
    Hair Color: Black
    Force-sensitive: No
    Division: New Republic Navy
Description: A veteran of the New Republic Navy, Ridely Bomaar joined the military just in time to participate in the Rebellion's retaking of Coruscant, although his role was minimal in the form of a starfighter pilot for the growing Green Ops.

Flying under Lieutenant Commander Kilch Kanomin, his major achievement came in the form of the destruction of the Imperial Star Destroyer Event Horizon, a mission directly linked with the retaking of Coruscant. He later fought, and killed, the same Imperial commander as he destroyed the ISD Event Horizon II, this time however leading the Green Ops as their Cmmander.

This was a rather trivial victory in terms of the bigger picture, as just days later he participated in the fall of Coruscant to the Imperials. His job in protecting evacuating Rebel officials earned him a promotion to Captain, but it was a somber time nonetheless.

Following the beginnings of establishing peace with the Empire, Ridely opted to join the New Republic Military Academy, where he recently graduated and awaits further orders from Fleet Command...

[hl=blue]Ken Kenobi- And you have a nice day ;)[/hl]

    OOC:

I already have an Diplomat (Who I'm quite sure might be one of the first casualties of IBOP; see main IBOP thread), but I want a Senator because they look like fun. I'm sure Sullust is a New Republic System but correct me if I'm wrong.

    Name: Yuik Mien
    Gender: Male
    Age: 36
    Species: Sullestan
    Force Sensitive: None
Division: New Republic Senate (Senator: Sullust)
    Current Location: Awaiting Orders

    Strike Cruiser, Watery Depths

Quinn jogged into the confrerence room, panting for breath.

"Sorry.....I was in.....a simulator," he gasped, sitting down in a chair.

After catching his breath, he walked up to the two new people in the room, who he guessed were the new members of the squadron.

A-kaz fell to the floor, and Quinn was the first to his side, holding his fellow pilot's head in his hands.

"Someone grab something for him to drink!" the bothan yelled.

OOC: With regard to the IBOP thread, if anyone wishes to OOC discuss the IC occurances, I'll be more then willing to do so via PM, despite LSA's verdict. Obviously the conversation will be strictly OOC; let NRI work out the rest. ;)

    IC as William Shard

As he handed the cup of caf to Feylis and took a long sip of his own, he heard Quinn's yelp.

Looking down at his cup of caf for a ludicrous second before discarding it as a suitable drink, he grabbed a water dispenser and a mug and jogged over to his fallen comrade, handing a full cup of water to A-kaz as Quinn helped her up.

Feylis was nearby, and Will proped on a knee looking at his squadron mate.

    "Are you alright there?"

    TAG: fellow blades.

    IC as Dersk Brey'la

He looked squarely at the ageing man and heard his gruff tones, hearing an infinite sadness not unlike that of their Chief of State at times.

His craft is long honed and well scripted, I should do well to watch him.

Dersk listened again to the detailing of the Impression act, and came to a decision.

"I will again, re-iterate my support for the New Alderaan venture should it prove the most pragmatic, but perhaps now is a good time to toss up as many alternatives as we might be able to do, discuss each in turn and then come to a decision.

Democracy my dear fellows, as we all know, thrives on diversity of opinion and idea."

    TAG: NR lads and lasses.
