And why is it that so many OT characters are in this film, but Luke pretty much isn't? I keep hearing there was no room for him in the movie, but there certainly seems to be enough room for lots of other characters from the OT, not to mention newly created ones like Rose who seems to have been given a role that could have been Luke's.

Dear god, do not let JJ recast young Luke. It will look as good as CGI Jabba in ANH special edition.

I heard they didn't want Luke in it because his eyes are too googly. True story.

    Oh, don't act all high-and-mighty.

I had a kid once--it was okay. Turns out it wasn't really my thing.

    OFF-TOPIC:

Q: How many hipsters does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

A: It's a pretty cool number; you've probably never heard of it...

ON-TOPIC: I actually agree with the "generic plot point" thing. I mean, every fanboy and his cat (which was probably named something like Darth Meowlevolence or Grand Moff Not-Barkin or Mon Meowthma or Pawssk or something) just assumed Han and Leia lived happily ever after with two kids (boy and girl, of course) and were more than happy to hand them over to Luke's Jedi school so they could risk life and limb and perhaps essentially become possessed and murder innocent people, including Luke. C'mon.[/quote]

I don't think it's they couldn't find a role for him. I'm pretty sure they wrote the role the way they wanted it. They could have given Luke a huge role where he leads the new trio, faces the villain and kicks their butt. That honestly doesn't sound as interesting to me as the plot they went with though. Taking Luke out of the equation for the first film ups the danger for the new crew considerably since they have no one but themselves to face off against Kylo Ren. But instead of just not using Luke at all in the story they've rather ingeniously made him absolutely central to the plot. It keeps his importance while not taking any of the tension from the film. It's pretty brilliant IMO.

My theory on why Luke took absence from the galaxy at large:

After the destruction of the second Death Star and the death of Palpatine and Darth Vader, Luke finally got a breather and a chance to talk to Force Ghost Obi-Wan to learn the truth about his father, Anakin. Obi-Wan finally spilled all the beans and told Luke EVERYTHING. Not from a certain point of view, but the REAL truth.

Luke got mad, threw is hands up, told Obi-Wan to walk-off and yelled "I'M OUT!" and was not heard from again.

Well, that is what he SHOULD have done.

And then we have those who accept every rumor, no matter how ridiculous, as absolutely wonderful, and chastise those of us who disagree, and pretty much tell us to shut up and go away.

I'm just saying I can't judge until I see the movie. A movie that may be a complete disaster or it may be great.

The general beat that Luke may only show as a cameo does not mean that the movie is garbage. Its bold for sure. But, taken in context it may be great.

    I can't know until I see it.

Dave Filoni said Yoda isn't seen much in The Clone Wars because if he showed up the problem would be solved. Luke is powerful. Either he has to be the central character or the storyteller must invent a reason for why he isn't around.

Well two things first how are the rebels losing ground. They had no ground to begin with even after they took out the 2nd Death Star. This basically seems to put us back at Square 1, and then Luke wanders off while the Rebels are getting pounded not much of a Hero.

Lol, my issue is this if u want write Luke off the stage, there seem to be way better options then what we have been hearing. Luke sense a threat in the unknown region goes to investigate preferably before the Rebel Alliance starts losing massively again. Still a hero but off stage tactfully and respectfully. Plus plenty of fodder for some books or videogames.
