Now I know why "Two and a Half Men" keeps getting renewed.

And I'm surprised to see "Men in Trees" so high...

A definite overabundance of CIS, a show I grew bored with very rapidly...

Jesus, American Idol is huge. Heroes is a huge hit for NBC seeing as they've put out nothing but duds for about the last five years now.

The Nielsen Ratings System is a flawed ratings system that ignores key demographics. Those numbers mean nothing (IMO). Unfortunetly, everyone in the television business looks to them as the end-all be-all.

How does it ignore key demographics? This sounds interesting.

My understanding of how the Neilsen's work is that they have two methods of gathering information. The first is the Neilsen "families". These are people that have a special box in their home that keeps track of what channel is being watched when. IIRC, each household gets one box, regadless of how many TVs they own. There are something like 40,000 of these households accross the country. People can also sign up to recieve "notebooks" and manually enter their television viewing habits. These two systems are used to gauge how many people across the entire US were watching a given program.

Since only a small fraction of the country is recording thier viewing habits, it's possible for a show to get a 0 in the ratings and still have an audience. This most often happens for shows that target younger audiences. There are no boxes, and this no data, for college dormitories (or most college students for that matter), or other public viewing areas such as bars. Since there is only one box per household, one could assume that the head of the house (i.e parents) would have their television viewing recorded, while their children's shows go un-recorded. So while mom and dad sit down to watch CSI or Two and a half men, their kids who are watching some sitcom goes unnoticed. And since people are aware that they're TV watching is being recorded, it can cause customer bias.

    Exactly.

The significance of the raw Nielsen numbers has been declining significantly in the past ten or fifteen years or so. Advertisers know they're flawed, and in any case, they no longer really care about how many eyeballs are on the screen - they only care about how many of the right eyeballs are on the screen.

In other words, they want to know how they're doing in specific target demographics. The major networks keep trying to push the significance of the Nielsens because that's the only arena where they win.

That was my first thought on reading through that list.

My second was that I can't believe there are so many CBS shows on it.

I was surpised by all the crap people suposedly watch. The only new shows I watch are Heroes, Lost, Smallville, Psych, and Battlestar Galactica. Other than that I watch reruns of L&O and lots of cable news.

The only surprising thing on there to me is AFV. It just proves that watching people get hit in the gonads will never get old.

I regularly watch exactly zero shows on that list.

The Nielsen notebooks are pretty flawed too. I've done the notebooks three times (once when I worked in television which should've excluded me, but I did it anyway because they don't actually follow up on your occupation). I never filled out the book when I was actually watching TV and inevitably did it by memory a week or two later. I almost always just put what I "would've" watched even when I wasn't actually watching those shows.

Men in Trees is so high on the list because it follows Grey's Anatomy. It should be donig better with such a strong lead in show.

I can't believe so many people are watching Deal or No Deal. I can see the appeal, but come on. One can only take so much of that show, right?

Neilsens, while not perfect, are able to give the networks stats on key demographics, including the all important 18-35 age group. What I don't understand, in the age of digital cable, why can't the networks get exact information from the cable companies as to what stations are being watched? I'd bet that those cable companies are figuring out how to make the most money from such a service.

I don't know about other people, but I don't turn my cable box off, just my TV. Therefore, when I stopped watching Heroes last night, I just left it on NBC until I decide to watch TV sometime the next day. If the cable companies were sending in the info, they would think I watched NBC for 12 hours or something.

Im not sure of the exact rating but 24 bounced back the following week.

Unfortunately the same cant be said for Lost. Apparently the February 14th episode was their lowest rated episode since the show debuted.

Survivor is still on the air? Some of these shows I haven't even heard of. Apart from that, I am simultaneously shocked, saddened, and not surprised by the mountain of crap that dominate this list.
