So, today, you come home to find that someone has left the TFA novelization and graphic novel adaption in your mailbox. What do you do?

I half expect Hasbro to try and sell an empty box and you get the figures in March 2016. :)

Give it to someone who is capable of standing up to me, and tell them, "No matter what I say, do not give this to me until I show you the ticket stub that I have seen the movie. No matter how mad I get, and no matter how much I beg and plead, do not give it to me until then."

We might need to start a buddy system on this. I really don't know if I can stop myself.

You forgot to begin your post with 'Pop quiz, hotshot' and a pic of Dennis Hopper.

That would probably be my wife that left it for me. She's a fast reader, so I generally let her read things first. And, no, I wouldn't read it... I'd DEVOUR it. And then I'd go to the theater and watch the movie. I'd revel at the wonderful sights and sounds and UNDERSTAND what the characters motivations are when time in the movie sacrifices some exposure they didn't have time to include.

If any of you have time, get the boxed set of any of the Lord of the Rings movies. The movies in the theater were truncated for your viewing pleasure. The box set DVDs are twice the movie that the theater had - literally. Four hours runtime each. You get to see the Mouth of Sauron in the final movie - such an incredible character, but he ended up on the cutting room floor for movie theater runtime.

Honestly, I hear a lot of folks complain bitterly about all the "unanswered questions." Really. Read the book.

DarthIshyZ, the problem with that is the LOTR books were written first, whereas movie novelizations are written based on and around the script. In some cases (like the completely amazing ROTS novel), they make the movie better and serve to enhance the experience. In others (mainly the ESB and ANH ones), it's just a bare-bones retelling of the story with no extra content to help with "unanswered questions." I'd love it if the TFA novelization is more like ROTS, and has some amazing depth that adds to the movie. But we'll see.

Alan Dean Foster wrote it. I know you're contrary, but it'd be unwise to pursue the idea that he didn't. He did.

So will his be canon in the sense of the other novelizations of the films, where it's only canon if it's like the film?

I agree with you completely. The OT novelizations are simple retellings. I don't see it as a "problem," though. I see it as a lesson for the publishers. I prefer to think that the powers that be learned from that lessun. That's why the later publications are much more. I am so looking forward to the novelization.

That's a good question. The difference is, here it's written AFTER the Story Group Initiative, so ADF will have their input and won't make mistakes like
    Owen being Obi-Wan's brother
or the crystal being outside the lightsaber in the ANH novelization
or Padme dying when Luke and Leia were four

Not as far as I know- only Leia's more detailed memories when she's saying "she died when I was very young" suggest an older age than "infant" - no actual figure is given.
