    Favorite lines?

    1) A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...
    2) Star Wars

Pretty much downhill after that for me.

Argh, where to begin? So many amazing moments.

    A few to start with:

    - Chewie unable to eat his bbq.
    - Rey catching the saber in the throne room.
    - the entire throne room fight
    - Holdo's sacrifice
    - Fathier's running across the moonlit beach
    - Luke spear-fishing
    - Lesson one
    - The Cave
    - Rey's saber training
    - Luke channelling Han in his final lopsided grin to Kylo (I'm convinced this is a thing don't @ Me)
    - the sea monster
    - Finn's hero shot before he takes out Phasma
    - The legend of Luke Skywalker
    - one of my all time moments in the saga - the Rashomon flashbacks, but especially learning of Luke's moment of shame and consequence
    - Yoda burning it all down when Luke can't go through with it (whilst knowing full well Rey has the books anyway).
    - Just all of Yoda
    - Some of DJ's dialogue
    - Leia and Luke's goodbye
    - Leia using the force
    - Luke striding out with a laser sword to face down the entire First Order
    - Captain Kanady - a great Imperial
    - Paige's sacrifice
    - Holdo liking Poe the troublemaker
    - Leia and Holdo's good bye.

    So many more...

    - Snoke's death
    - Kylo and Rey vs Praetorian Guards
    - Holdo suicide scene

One of the moments which had me grinning like an idiot for a few seconds after it happened was Finn's "oh come on!" when their ship is blown on up on the Canto Bight beach. John Boyega really sells it with that exasperated look. It helps make the character endearing and likeable (and that's what important ultimately).

Two of my favourite Finn quotes:

    Rose: “You’re THE Finn!”
    Finn: *confused/proud look* “The Finn?”

    *Millennium Falcon getting shot at*
Finn: “Oh, they hate that ship!”

There were tons of good moments / lines.
Unfortunately there were even more unlogic things, continuity errors, bad cuts and bad plot elements.

After my third viewing I must add Poe touching Leia's hand, and his determination on the bridge. Oscar Isaac played Poe so well!

And Rey in the mirror and the way she was telling her story to Kylo - so well done!

Packed cinema Sunday matinee and loud cheers from the crowd when Luke brushed his shoulder after the barrage XD

Yeah he made an impression in his short appearance. "We need to scramble our fighters...5 minutes ago".
    Agreed. Such as:

"Aah don't judge the wrapper friend. Me & First Order codeage go waay back. For the right price I can break you into old man Snoke's private boudoir"
"Guys, I can do it. But there exists a pre-do it conversation about price."
"Finn, let me learn you somethin' big. It's all a machine partner. Live free. Don't join".
    "Sorry Big F".

Clearly Johnson is great at writing dialogue for weird distinctive characters. Just one in a long line of reasons for why he's perfect for SW.

    "See you round, kid."

On my second viewing I realised that Luke was intentionally channeling Han (immediately after saying "I'll always be with you. Just like your father", and to Leia that "no one's ever really gone"), and it blew my mind.

    The entire opening action sequence
    Snoke being bisected
    'Darth Sidious' mention!
The WHOLE throne room sequence, from the bisecting to one of the best lightsaber battles we've seen
    Holdo going lightspeed
Every second of Luke on Crait, but especially the twins' reunion and the revelation of his projection (Oh, and him brushing his shoulder, which got the biggest laugh each time I've seen it)
    Twin Suns, one last time

    So many.

The opening with Poe throwing that X-Wing around like a boss.
Seeing Leia use the force - sadly something we'll never get an opportunity to see on screen. (although I get why people had issues with the "physics of it" - we've seen similar examples in TCW and Rebels).
All the stuff with Rey and Luke.
Rose: "Now it was worth it".
Finn: "They really hate that ship."
Yoda: "Read them have you? Page turners they were not."
Finding out that the soldier who says "...Salt" is nicknamed "Salty" in the credits. (A definite future Black Series candidate)
Seeing Adrian Edmondson in a Star Wars movie.
The final scene with the kid.

Poe’s x wing maneuvers (this and all the flyboy comments from Holdo gave me a Top Gun flashback vibe)
    Holdo Lightspeeding into the Supremacy
    Chewie smashing in Luke's door
    Luke’s Lesson One
    Luke on the Falcon
    Luke and R2 together again
    R2 playing the Leia hologram
    Luke/Leia reunion
    The Dice
Just the right amount of Porgs
Ren and Rey vs the Praetorian Guards
Ren turning on Snoke especially after Snoke bragging that he can't be betrayed
    Yoda

Luke’s mention of Sidious and the faults of the Jedi Order
The Millenium Falcon flight in the Crait caves
Luke vs Kylo (shoulder brush off, See you around, kid)
New Force Powers (Luke, Leia, Snoke smashing Hux to the deck, Yoda using Force lightning as a FG)

    Colors on Crait

After watching it a second time, I keep remembering the scene between Luke and Yoda. I mean, the relationship between those two is just pure Star Wars.

Yoda knows Luke better than he knows himself. For all of Luke's bluster and downtrodenness, he could not get himself to light fire to that tree. Not only does Yoda know he couldn't do it, but he does it for him! Then when Luke tries to save the books Yoda starts laughing away. My favorite scene easily...I think in the entire saga.

I'm warming up to Canto Bight. It's some of the best worldbuilding we've seen in a Star Wars movie for a while (I'm surprised that so many seem not to like it). The way that we transition from "the worst" to the glasses chinking and that beautiful yacht flying off of the waterfall was nice. There's a cleanliness and polish to that ship and the casino sections that stands in marked contrast to the stables that helps underscore the society that's in place on the planet.

Possibly my favourite line in the film is one Luke says to Rey early on in her training (after the hilarious leaf tickling moment): "to say that if the Jedi die the light dies is vanity, can you see that?"

It just revealed so much about where Luke was and how everything had made him feel, particularly being saddled (by two masters who themselves failed) with the burden of recreating the Jedi Order anew when no one told him how to do it any better than before.

Can I just add - "Blow that ship, OUTTA THE SKY!"

Driver is surely the best performance across the saga (though Hamill comes close in TLJ).

Agreed. I also love that it has that pure goofy SW adventure feel, and the Fathiers on the beach is pure 80s fantasy. At first I felt it was a bit of a diversion, but I now think it's a great thematic piece of plotting that if you strip it out, undermines the whole. Without their kindness and bravery, we don't see the spark spreading through the people on the ground. We don't get the idea of the moneyed and powerful being the true rulers of the galaxy, and we don't get that drill down into one of the main themes. Yes, it's satisfying to destroy and tear down what you hate. But what's truly important is protecting and setting free what you love.

Question - does anyone think that the wink Luke gives Threepio was because he knew Threepio knows he's not really there?

The part with Rose's sister on the bomber was amazing. The whole scene was probably my favorite space battle, but somehow the sequence with the ladder and the button and the stakes involved just about brought a tear to my eye.

I know some have been critical of the "Mary Poppins" feel of Leia returning to the ship, and while that's not my favorite scene in the movie by a long shot I think seeing her use the Force was very important. I like that it happened before she is departed from that universe.

I walked in on Friday night expecting to dislike the movie after a lot of backlash from Thursday night and early Friday morning. But I was surprised with how much I enjoyed this movie.

A lot of things that have stuck with me have to do with the sound effects:

The sound of the lightning from Snoke at the beginning of the movie was so loud and violent. It was perfect.
The silence from Holdo's sacrifice was stunning.
The sound of Ben's lightsaber against the guards... masterful.

Luke at the end... what a treat!
The more I think about this movie, the more I actually like it.
