My first viewing, those things that were total WTF moments have become some of my favorites...

I adore the whole Rey following Luke around the island bit. What was initially the cringiest thing i've ever seen ( the milking ) becomes one of the best because of Lukes look to Rey and her disgust at him haha.

I've typed a list several times in the past day, only to be hit with unexpected (or expected) errors.

    Luke and Leia scene.
Luke and Leia's theme playing their scene.
    Costumes
    The design of Crait.
The hint at the Knights of Ren being Luke's former students.
    The nuns losing their cart.
    Snoke being cut in half.
Captain Kennedy....or Canatty... or whatever his name was.

Just a few off the top of my head:

Holdo's taking as many of her enemies as she can with her.
R2 showing Luke the old hologram.
Leia saving herself from space - amazing visually, considering what happened to Carrie - I was in tears
Luke standing alone - sorta - in front of all those ATATs - incredible.

    Scenes
    - Reunions (Yoda & Luke, Luke & R2, Luke & Leia)
    - The throne room battle.
    - Holdo light speeding through the First Order ships & the silence.
    - Luke's facing down the First Order & Ren, and going out on his own terms, undefeated.

    Lines
Yoda: "The greatest teacher, failure is"
Poe: "We are the spark, that will light the fire, that will burn the First Order down"
Yoda: "We are what they grow beyond. That is the burden of all masters"
Luke: "Amazing. Every word of what you just said was wrong. The Rebellion is reborn today. The war is just beginning. And I will not be the last Jedi".

    and

"Hope is like the Sun, if you only believe in it when you can see it, you'll never make it through the night" - Leia Organa

Another favorite aspect of mine, and food for thought amidst the backlash.

That moment reminds me of the quadjumper being destroyed on Jakku.

"Blast that hunk of junk out of the sky" - Supreme Leader Kylo Ren (on Crait)
"We're going to win this war not by fighting what we hate, but fighting for what we love" - Rose Tico to Finn (on Crait)
"The greatest teacher, failure is" - Grand Master Yoda to Jedi Master Luke Skywalker (on Ach-to)
"Amazing. Every word you just said is wrong. The Rebellion is reborn today. The war is just beginning, And I will not the last of the jedi" - Jedi Master Luke Skywalker to Supreme Leader Kylo Ren.

Yes, for all that on a first watch it can look like he’s throwing TFA under a bus, there are some nice call backs like that. See also “we never cover!”, Finn getting an electric shock again, Kylo and Rey battling over the Saber once more, mention of the forest. I actually think the times the callbacks are used as insults are born from character as well, as opposed to RJ flipping two fingers at JJ.

I love the Star Destroyers appearing from hyperspace viewed from the ground at the start. I was PUMPED at that point. Not much more from then regretably.

I loved seeing Luke's XWing in the water. If they played the Luke appearing physically card at the end, I would have loved to see him take that thing from under the water after he couldn't do that in the OT. We know we can at this point, but seeing him be a pilot again would have been great.

when Rey asks to be trained and Luke says no and she replies saying, "Why? I followed around, you are not busy."

When Hux suggested that Ren shouldn't go out to met Luke and Ren force threw Hux. It was funny cause Hux freaking flew instead of just being a push against something.

And when Rey tried to take her saber and Snoke got it back smacking her in the back of the head.

Favorite scene was probably Kylo killing his annoying master instead of killing the Jedi.

Another detail I like in a weird way I like the fact that Del Toro betrayed Finn. I appreciate characters who operate on a strict policy regardless of how it balances the good or evil in the world. In Del Toro's character, he said from the beginning all he cared about was money. And it was all good and fun, and helpful to the heroes until it worked against them. But he was only doing what he told them from the beginning, and you can't NOT like Del Toro for that, because he never suggested we should trust him. That was pretty cool

I really liked the initial flight scene when Poe went face to face with the star destroyer too.

Finally, seeing Luke's X-wing underwater was cool to see. I kept expecting him to return to the Resistance after raising his X-wing from the water, a la Ep. 5.

I thought that too, but then why would former Jedi have axes & pikes etc as weapons?

Loved when Luke says "The Rebellion is reborn today. The war, is just beginning. And I will not the last jedi". In between each line of that it flashes to the faces of Poe & then Finn. You see light appear on their faces but you don't know why. Then right after the "...last Jedi" line we see Rey. She's moved all of the rocks, creating that light on the faces of her friends. A perfectly written & constructed scene. RJ is a genius.

Luke casually pole-vaulting across the cliffs. Then the shot of his dangerous looking expression as he looks back at Rey.

After Snoke is killed, the slow motion of the PG's rushing towards Rey & Kylo. Then it switches to normal speed & it's on!

Rey's berserker rage during the throne room fight.

Rey about the Force: "It's a power that Jedi have that lets them control people and...make things float."

John Williams' music during the Leia space scene.

The RotJ Battle of Endor music as the Falcon flies into the red caverns on Crait. What a moment! Also: Chewie's awesome piloting.

Snoke's epic dialogue in ordering Kylo to execute Rey. Something like: "Now, my worthy apprentice. Son of darkness. Heir apparent to Lord Vader. Where there was conflict I now sense resolve. Where there was weakness, strength. Complete your training & FULFILL. YOUR. DESTINY."

They might not have built new lightsabers like Kylo had at that point. It's also possible that when you hear Kylo ignite his lightsaber and stab the one guy, it's the first time he has used it during the battle or they had all put theirs away by then.

If they aren't Luke's former students, then I feel they are heavily connected to them as possibly their prison guards. Vader's fortress on Mustafar would be an excellent place to hold force sensitive, half trained Jedi.

Some new things that come to mind that I love.

    1) Luke’s moment across the chasm to fish reminding of his trip across the chasm on the Death Star in ANH.

    2) Seeing Luke live off the land and spear a giant fish and carry it over his back.

    3) His line about “Well, Rey from nowhere. Why are you here?” I don’t know why but it sounds so cool how he says it.

    2) Luke’s TESB-like reaction on how often he read the ancient texts. Love how Yoda and R2 and Leia all helped him heal. And how the old Luke comes out with them.

    3) I like that the Porgs weren’t used frequently in the manner the Ewoks were and that Johnson was willing to go Dark witn the toasted Porg concept.

    4) I liked the visual of the cave having vines coming out of it.

    5) I loved the shot where Poe puts his foot down on the rickety old skiers and a piece falls out the bottom. Just his facial reaction and the shot up was perfect.

    6) I feel like I could watch the Falcon flying through that mine with all the refractions of Light and the stalagmites crumbling for an hour straight. It’s stunning.

    7) I love how Rey takes a step forward to Ben in the elevator and says “I’ll help you.”

    8) I love how much Snoke seems to be revelling in her fear. He enjoys death of Jedi so much you can see it blinding him and know Kylo senses that too.

    9) The shot of the Praetorian Guard roping the saber and pulling Rey in and then Rey flinging it against the tapestry is just incredible. Then, when the other guy breaks it apart and walks up it’s a geekasm.

    10) Rey’s scream with the saber.

    11) Her acting and pain when she says “Ben, don’t do this.”

    12) The sense of loss in the room when they announce the senior leadership is wiped out. Felt real.

    13) Hux’s frustration at being this bad ass heavy and slow air craft carrier (essentially) and trying to fight off battleships who are able to run enough. Also, his delight on how they will run out of fuel and how it’s only a matter of time.

    14) Being able to see wealth and opulence in Star Wars in the Casino setting. It’s a visual treat.

    15) The stable kids playing with hand made toys and dealing with the Dickens-Esque Falthier boss.

    16) Snokes monologue about how he assumed it would be a Skywalker who’d rise to challenge them and his displays of power while focused.

    17) Spotting and recognizing Snoke’s Arrogance and bravado as weaknesses as he talked. He’s just so thrilled with himself and so confident that he played both of them and that she will soon die. “Such spunk!” That is why you must die.” Strike you down with the cruelest of stokes. Oh, you think he can be turned, do you?” Serkis was great.

    18) Hux realizing he’s no match for Kylo Ren from the “Long live the Supreme Leader” moment on to the end. You can tell he’s not used to having to be this way around Kylo Ren and it pains him.

    19) I love the idea of the Death Star tech leading to other uses.

    20) Love how angry Kylo Ren is when he first sees Luke.

    21) Love the touches Johnson deliberately put in there to show that Luke isn’t physically there. No red movement on the ground. Different sound. The dice disappear. His saber never touches Kylo Ren’s. And him channeling Han at the end with “See ya around Kid” was amazing. Love how confused Kylo Ren is. You can almost sense his intrigue in the Light side power again and his doubt that he’d chosen the wrong path.

    22) Rey having taken the Jedi texts and hiding them on the Falcon with Yoda aware makes his line about “The girl has what she needs” so excellent. Lose Rey, we must not.

    23) The shot of ships exiting hyperspace from the ground up and the villains loving how they caught them mid-evacuation.

    24) The setup of the old tech on Crait and the foxes finding a way out.

    25) The look on the faces of the Resistence as Luke’s legend reaches truly mythical proportions when he walks out there. And how word of that feat spread fast throughout the galaxy.

    26) The light on each of their faces as Rey lifts the rocks at a time and the bookend of the line, "The Force isn't just about moving stones" because she isn't just doing it for fun. She's doing it to save lives.

I loved seeing Yoda laugh again though. All the Yoda stuff is spot on. Especially with him knowing about Rey having the Jedi texts. I love how Luke seems old to us but to Yoda, who's ancient, he's still "Young Skywalker" and like all respected elders in our lives... we sort of feel younger around them.

I can only imagine how much fun kids had with the all the BB8 and BB9E stuff to be honest. When I was a kid I loved the R2 scenes and the Ewok moments where they stole equipment so much. Those were some of the entryway points for me as a very young kid watching these films with my older siblings and then I matured beyond the stuff more tailored toward my younger audience and gravitated more toward the more mature elements. The kids around me in both theatres squeeled with joy when BB8 had taken control of the AT-ST. Talk about a tech update for BB8!

He really is the perfect droid update for a time period 40 years later and I seriously do want a remote control one. [face_laugh]

I like that this film still had some moments for kids of different ages to enjoy (including my own kids) and also some moments for us children of the 80s who still like to feel like children at heart now and then. While also dealing with some mid-life stuff that I think a lot of people wonder about regarding purpose.
