I just got a FB message from a German friend in Köln. He said the kölsch is flowing and he's quite drunk, but everything is "so German and pride" right now. I think he means everyone is proud to be German - his English is quite good normally but kölsch is basically the lightest, least-hangovery and easiest to drink beer I've encountered so he's probably 12 litres in.

Happy for the Germans, but happier that Argentina didn't win. Here's a song for the Argentina fans...

Who will win this year's FIFA Ballon Dor?

Messi- didn't win a trophy, played a decent game in the final.
German players? None of them are extremely shiny, not even like Xavi and Iniesta in 2010.
Robben? He played well in the club and World Cup but didn't win ECC/WC.
CRonaldo? He is the best in club level but had a bad WC.

 

Messi was the best player of the tournament... erm okay.

Messi the player of the tournament? I don't see how. Maybe during the group stage he was the most valuable player to his team but he did little in the knockout stage. A lot of people deserved it more. Consolation prize he didn't seem at all happy about.

 

I support Robben.

 

Arjen Robben (and others) actually deserved it. That might be why Messi got it. World Cup? Nope. Falklands? Nope. Player of the tournament - eh, might as well. They need something.

Exactly, it's a consolation prize and it shouldn't be. I agree Robben would have been my choice, maybe Kroos.

 

Argh, I missed half the game because it started an hour earlier than the previous matches. And then I let myself doze off thinking nothing much would happen, and Germany made that one goal.

Btw, why were the teams' uniforms different than before?

Also, will go largely overlooked, but Boateng had a monster game tonight, one huge tackle after another.

 

This is actually the first World Cup win of united Germany and of course first European win on South American soil.
