Thanks to The Attackinator for the idea for this thread. Just thought I'd clean up the thread a bit.

The Chilling Season Finale Introduces a Deadly New Enemy

    <img src="http://www.starwars.com/img/theclonewars/news20090317/cadbane_bg.jpg">

The heroes of the Republic have repeatedly beaten back the assaults orchestrated by the evil Separatist forces, but an entirely new threat -- lethal mercenary Cad Bane -- will emerge from the shadows in "Hostage Crisis," the thrilling conclusion to the first season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, airing at 9 p.m. ET/PT Friday, March 20 on Cartoon Network.
Count Dooku seeks to spring a Separatist prisoner from Republic captivity, but his profile prevents him from getting close enough to set in motion his malevolent plan.

Enter Cad Bane, the galaxy's most fearsome bounty hunter, as ruthless as he is deadly. He is quintessentially cold, cruel and calculating -- and when the price is right, he can't be stopped. Backed by Dooku and the Separatists, he's bringing his unique skill set and impressive arsenal to bear against the very heart of the Republic. Bane brazenly brings the fight to the Senate's doorstep, with a rogues gallery of galactic scum as his allies.

"This episode gave us the chance to do something totally different, to go in a new direction with the series," says supervising director Dave Filoni. "We've seen the good guys and the bad guys, from the top of the food chain to the cannon fodder on the front lines. Now we get to look at some of the opportunists, at the mercenaries operating without a side. It's a whole new dynamic we haven't seen yet, and at the same time it's very Star Wars."

Patterned after the laconic gunslingers of spaghetti Westerns, Bane is lethally cool and relishes being a bad guy. He is unflappable in the face of danger, and even welcomes the opportunity to pit his formidable skills against the legendary prowess of the Jedi Knights. Filoni says the inspiration from the red-eyed bounty hunter came directly from George Lucas.

"He had a clear idea for this bad guy who plays by his own set of rules, whose moral code is dictated by his fee," says Filoni. "And he had sketches and concepts dating back to the original films. If Boba Fett was sort of the Man With No Name of the Star Wars galaxy, then Cad Bane is his counterpoint -- his Lee Van Cleef. So that's how we built the character, with that in mind. It's a cool parallel to our world, and a cool balance in theirs."

Making his Star Wars: The Clone Wars debut in Friday's season finale, Bane has already established a place as a fan-favorite -- among the series' creators and crew.

"The crew loves Cad Bane, and I really think the fans will, too," says episode director Giancarlo Volpe. "He brings a serious bad-ass sensibility to Star Wars. He's a lethal and ruthless bounty hunter, and you see that right away in the episode. Unlike Boba Fett, Cad doesn't take prisoners."

He was pretty good, I thought.

I guess he was exactly what I expected, for better or worse.

I do like the idea of a "gunslinger" bounty hunter, and I like the idea of his "posse". Aurra Sing was pretty cool.

Cad Bane was badass.... When he shot the Senator trying to leave, and cracked the Senate Guard's neck, I was like "Woah. This guy DOES mean business."

Cad Bane in season II looks AWESOME.

I like him more than Grievous already, and will be happy to see more of him. His posse brings a colorful element to the show. And he as yet has no embarrassing failures to is discredit, so he comes off as a bit more of a credible threat. It will be interesting to see how the other heroes interact with him.

That said, I hope they don't sideline the other villains too much in favor of Bane & Crew. It is the Clone Wars; it seems that the focus should be more on military commanders and personnel than mercenaries (who seem like they're probably going to figure prominently in the LAS anyhow). And I will not stand to have the Obi-Wan / Ventress sauciness diminished!

Can't quite draw a bead on Bane's voice-- seemed to veer between "cowboy" and "Eastern European (vampire?)" rather liberally. But I assume it'll settle down into its own thing over time.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing when I saw those scenes. I am glad though they made Cad Bane have less moral standing then Jango or Boba Fett.

Cad Bane was Kriffing awesome. And I do love the banner.

Does anyone feel like him in season 2 isn't the best idea? I mean, he was badass and I want to see him more, but not so much that we get inside his head. The best villians are the ones we know nothing about.

I look forward to seeing Cad Bane next season, but I only hope they don't:
1- Over-use him. A little Bane goes a long way. With so many villains (Dooku, Ventress, Grievous, Tactical Droid and other Generals) they can mix things up and keep the bounty hunter fresh.
2- Make him an uber-awesome kick-ass fighter. Cad is much more interesting as a cunning, ruthless criminal than as a precision kung-fu killing machine. What they've set up with this episode is great, just stick with that.

I kinda thought his voice reminded me of someone from Louisiana, if that makes sense.

    Think Gambit from the X-Men.

I also got a cajun vibe from him.

Cad was really cool, I thought. The "Duros with a wide brim hat" concept, surprisingly, works a lot better on screen than it did on my head when first hearing of the character.

It is interesting that the episode guide says that this was the fourth episode produced for season 2. I could have sworn that Cad was always intended to be intro'd in season 1.

Yeah, I'm in agreement with Gry. I hope that they don't overdo him and burn out.
I certainly think it would be an affront to the competent bounty hunter archetype to make him a super kung-fu fighter who does things like 'The Matrix', but I've certainly no trouble with him being around Jango's level of competence. Being a good marksman, full of gadgets he'll use anytime he can, and fighting with both resourcefulness and dirty tricks all the way!

Judging from the preview of season 2, the slo-mo kick at the end might not bode well for martial arts, but he certainly seems to have the underhanded space gunslinger thing right, in that he'll use any and every trick in the book to get one up on the Jedi.

Yeah, Cad Bane does look like a promising bad guy. Before he came around the only serious evil threat was General Greivous and Assaj. And they can only be in two places at once. So here's a question, I know that Cad is a bounty hunter, but do you think he will ultimately end up working for the Seps? I'm really looking forward to season two!

His hat is sexy. He's like Indiana Jones, but much, much cooler.

Cad Bane is the anti-Ahsoka. Maybe Grievous will get a hat just like his to look cool.

Is it just me or does Cad Bane's premier appearance feel underwhelming given how No Disintegrations, Please already set the bar so high for Star Wars bounty hunters?

I prefer to think Bane was indirectly hired by Ziro himself. I just don't see why the Seps would be interested in freeing Ziro. Even those Commando Droids working with the bounty hunters didn't seem like normal models, it looked more like they had been appropriated and reprogrammed by Cad to serve him. They had a very "independent" paint job.

I expected the character to be lame and over hyped, but I was really impressed. He is certainly a little too deadly for a kids show. I don?t think Megatron and Skelletor have had the chance to tell him that all weapons should be set to stun.

Since he knew Anakin already in this episode, "Cargo of Doom" must be set before this in time. Since they showed this one first could that mean that they are unhappy with COD? Maybe they are holding the episode for s2 so that they can change/tweak it.

I'm a huge Grievous fan but Cad Bane could become the second favorite villian or tie(oh gods, did I just say that?[face_worried] ) Well, I have to wait and see what they do with this character. And I hope they don't overuse him either, he's a bounty hunter, so his range is somewhat limited but perhaps he could work exclusively for the Seps toward the end sort of like Boba Fett working for Jabba.

If Dooku had hired him, Bane would be asking Dooku for money, rather than Ziro as he does at the end of Hostage Crisis. Though I suppose Dooku could have still hired him.

Bane is cool, but so far I don't see him as anything more then a filler between the death of Jango (who was the top bounty hunter in his lifetime) and the rise to prominence of Boba (who we can assume at the time of this series is still too young to be having a massive impact therefore more experienced bounty hunters are best until he takes over).

He has a chilling tone and a cool look and is clearly very smart. From the clip for season 2 it looks like he is capable to some extent of holding his own against Jedi and is certainly not afraid of them. I hope he will have less of a reliance on assistance from others to do most of the leg-work for him in the next series.

I've got to think that as of now he is not working for the Seps, but I'm interested in seeing if he will eventually. [face_thinking]
