Darth Plagueis: one of the most brilliant Sith Lords who ever lived. Possessing power is all he desires. Losing it is the only thing he fears. As an apprentice, he embraces the ruthless ways of the Sith. And when the time is right, he destroys his Master?but vows never to suffer the same fate. For like no other disciple of the dark side, Darth Plagueis learns to command the ultimate power . . . over life and death.

Darth Sidious: Plagueis?s chosen apprentice. Under the guidance of his Master, he secretly studies the ways of the Sith, while publicly rising to power in the galactic government, first as Senator, then as Chancellor, and eventually as Emperor.

Darth Plagueis and Darth Sidious, Master and acolyte, target the galaxy for domination?and the Jedi Order for annihilation. But can they defy the merciless Sith tradition? Or will the desire of one to rule supreme, and the dream of the other to live forever, sow the seeds of their destruction?

This is going to be so awesome. I've avoided spoilers so far, just another week to go. That preview I read in another novel was already very, very good, can't wait to read the entire book next week.

Is it just me or has this novel instantly made The Phantom Menace a thousand times more interesting, what with the creation of Anakin by the Sith, Plagueis' and Sidious' direct plotting of Veruna's demise and the Blockade of Naboo.
I hated Episode I when I first watched it, but the additions and connections that Luceno has drawn are nothing short of amazing. I think my feelings for TPM are growing fonder.... oh wait is that Maul surviving I hear?

But seriously, Luceno is undoubtly the king of the EU!

from what i read the Sith had no hand whatsoever in the creation of Anakin. It was the Force balancing itself.

From what I've read on the forum, SHOT is correct I think, yeah.

Having said that, from a certain point of view, I suppose because the Force had to balance itself because of what the Sith were doing, it means that the Sith were -- indirectly -- responsible for the Chosen One's birth, albeit it was an unintentional byproduct of their activities, rather than something they actually did directly themselves. :-B

But then that enters the general realm of cause-and-effect of who's responsible for bad things happening. :p

This book explains the bias of the Empire.

    Agreed.

Anakin's creation was the (in)direct result of Plagueis' experiments.

For me, the fate of Veruna was never in doubt; just to have been connected to Palpatine was enough in my book to tip off what had happened to him. What I don't have - and won't for another week, unfortunately - is the full story behind that death. That it served Sidious' ends is obvious, but what about the details? Who specifically killed him? How? With what? Where (obviously in exile, but where in exile?)? The beautiful thing is we're in fact likely to get a lot more than just that; based on what I have seen, it looks like we're getting a full exploration of Veruna as a character, as well as of his death. That's value for money talking.

Veruna's death is personal, clearly an intimate moment....

I think that happens around page 320 or so.

Palpatine and newly crowned Queen Amidala discuss Veruna in Cloak of Deception:
"Dead, your majesty?" Palpatine frowned in apparent disquiet. "Of course, I was aware he had gone into hiding following his abdication. But I understood he was in good health."

    [face_thinking]

Luceno had set the stage for this novel years ago, very Palpatine-like.

So how exactly do so many people already have this? O:) . It's usually just a few people, seems like everyone on the block has read it.

Can't wait for it... comes out two days before I go back to college. May just try to finish it in those two days.

    @ InstantDeath:
1.) Advance copies for online reviews, and book reading programs.
2.) The novel has been indexed* on Amazon & GoogleBooks for approximately two weeks.
3.) Some were mistakenly given early access on Kindle, Nook and others.
4.) Couple of random bookstores reportedly sold their copies on Dec 27th.

*Apart from the free previews, I got to read the novel backwards. How's that for a glitch?
Hard to process, all that jumbled info was.
    :p

Veruna's death befits the character, IMO.

This is NOT Darth Maul's mother.

Is Plagueis' death before, during or after the Blockade of Naboo? It'd have to be close....

The book (basically) outlines the past five hundred years of Bane's heirs. Not much in the way of great details, but enough for us to get a sense of how we've reached this point in GFFA history. The point about Ben, is a subtle one, hence the page # drop.:)

STAR WARS: DARTH PLAGUEIS Final mini-excerpt (ES):
?That is most welcome news,? Sidious said into the device, as if in a daze. ?I didn't expect this . . . A good choice, I think . . . I am certain of it, Supreme Chancellor . . . Yes, I'm sure she meant every word of it.?

?What now?? Plagueis asked the moment Palpatine broke the connection.

Sidious shook his head in disbelief. ?Valorum somehow managed to persuade the Council to send two Jedi to Naboo.?
