Well, perhaps I just approached the novel wrong. I had just heard so much about how amazing Darth Plagueis was, I guess I let it influence how i would perceive the book from the start.

Also, this is the Lit forum. I am not the most prolific person here, but from what I have seen: We don't give up on books unless they are garbage (Jedi Trial) or mediocre (Rogue Planet, The Approaching storm). Luceno is one of the best authors writing for the EU, to give up on him would be sacrilege!

Have him go back and forth arguing with himself about every evil deed he performs, like Gollum.

TCW Dooku - less "muah ha ha ha kill da wommin and da chilren" and a little more "it may be difficult to secure your release". Less psychotic Sith Lord, more political idealist. He can still be both.

[MileyCyrus]It's like he's evil but like he doesn't look evil because he's well dressed also he speaks well and has manners but he's still like evil but it's pretty cool because maybe he's not totally evil okay and you think maybe he could be good again and like he says he's on your side but he's not on your side but you think like maybe you should be on his side because it's pretty cool.[/MileyCyrus]

We've never seen Dooku's actual turn to the dark side, or what he was doing before the Separatist crisis started, or any narrative to connect all of the events in his life together.

A good timeframe for a Dooku/Tyranus novel would be the ending of Episode I, the Epilogue of Plagueis, anything in-between, during Episode II and immediately after Episode II where Tyranus and Sidious meet at the Works. If they really want to delve into Dooku, then perhaps stuff that features his brief youth on Serenno, his time and relationships with Yoda, Thame Cerulian and Lorian Nod could be touched upon too. Perhaps all the scenes in the Plagueis novel where he meets with the Muun, and his meetings with Sidious could be retreated from Dooku's POV.

With that in mind, what possible references could they utilize?

From videogames, Jedi Starfighter, and foreshadowing to Galactic Battlegrounds The Clone Wars and The New Droid Army. And of course, Bounty Hunter.
From TV, the two Clone Wars series, possibly even putting Dooku's first encounter with Ventress in book form.
From Comics, take your pic. There's tons of possibilities.
From the novels and juvenile stories, again, there's tons. Jedi Quest, Rogue Planet, Outbound Flight, The Approaching Storm, etc.

Stuff like Dooku's murder of Sifo Dyas., the erasure of Kamino from the archives, Dooku acquiring Grevious, etc can be done here as well. And for Palpatine's side, stuff like his continuting temptation of Anakin., contending with Outbound Flight, meeting Thrawn, Zonama Sekot and the buildup to the Death Star can be touched upon.

The point is that Dooku is supposed to be a sophisticated, charismatic intellectual leading a popular movement against the Republic by posing as a principled ex-Jedi firebrand political idealist. Showing some of that would be a good idea, rather than all the "I AM EVIL! SERVE ME EVILLY!"

Expecting one thing, and getting another can be frustrating with a book. I felt similarly with Knight Errant. I kept hearing amazing things about the storyline as a whole and the novel. I was bored to tears with the novel. I liked that the Plagueis novel focused more on the plotting and planning as opposed to the action. To much action would have felt out of place. You couldn't have the sith cause to much noticable mischief at that point in the timeline.

If I don't enjoy a book then I give up on it. My experience with the author doesn't change that.

I first saw the DP book at Walmart whilst waiting for my mom to finish shopping, at that point I did not have a job so I was unable to buy it but I was very engrossed while at the store and later decided to get it on the Kindle. I loved the well written nature of i t, it was intelligent, the vocabulary was great and the story was intricate. What really got me was listening to the audio book- Daniel Davis' voice performance was utterly amazing. I found it to be VERY entertaining and have listened to it more than three times. (I work graveyard so I listen to audiobooks a lot lol)

With that figure coming out, this bears a reread. I definitely wouldn't mind reading about him smacking down the assassins again!

I had to read that chapter over twice the first time I read the book. I hear I was thinking a Sith couldn't possibly get a chance to do anything cool between Bane and Sids in the EU.

Looks a little...like a carved stick with some cloth on it. But hey, it's Plagueis the Muun.

In book related news, after reading the book again recently, I went and read the Plagueis entry in book of sith. Really delves further into his mindset and experiments.

You've got to admire Palpatine's audacity. He messes with the Force so much that the Force creates a being to stop him, then Palpatine just goes and bends that being to his will.

I recently reread this book via audiobook. The two best scenes are without a doubt the assassin scene and, of course, the verbal smackdown. While there's some great action in the former, what I love even more is the abrupt change in Plagueis; the way it's written, it conveys this terrifying image of a meek banker rising amidst a field of corpses, and dispassionately slaughtering everything. I felt the best prose in the novel could be found in that section: in that moment, Plagueis, and by extension the Sith, was truly a nightmare.

That scene really is a great example of how mood and tone can sell an action sequence more than a body count ever can. With scenes like this, I can see why the Sith become the stuff of folklore and scary children's stories. The Bane books? Not so much.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!

I've been fairly critical of the book on subsequent rereads and wouldn't grade it any higher than an 8/10, but the chapter with the Maladians and Palpatine's retribution is easily the standout. Luceno's approach is more mature and cerebral than Karpyshyn's, but Plagueis desperately needed action as much as politics.

I really think it was not necessary to kill that fortune teller after she agreed to work for him.

On the contrary, it was utterly and completely necessary. Plagueis was set on eliminating every individual who could have had any idea that he was a Sith Lord-at that point in time, the only Sith Lord. Plagueis had no idea how much Venamis had told his potential apprentices about the Sith, and the last thing Plagueis wanted was another rival to deal with. Venamis was strong enough as it was, and nearly beat Plagueis.

Also, the Iktotchi prophetess's message went against Plagueis's plan. She was shouting her message for all to hear, the complete opposite of what the Sith were doing, hiding in the shadows. She had to die.

What I'm confused with is why Hego let the shape-shifter live. Admittedly, that scene at the casino is one of the parts of the book I tend to forget, so I don't remember the full details. Something about business?
