I know I'm jumping in a little late in the discussion here, but I completely agree. After reading the book it gives this scene so much more depth and meaning. And the look on his face is just so perfect. I mean you can pretty much see him remembering all of this and reveling in it. After the book the real depth of this scene is so much more...Palpable >.>...

    Sorry...I couldn't help myself [face_rofl]

One thing that confuses me. As he kills Plagueis, Palpatine says that Plagueis turned him to the Dark Side. Palpatine wasn't already a darksider?

In some ways yes, but Plagueis completed his turn imo

    He was a serial killer.

Well...not really. When Plagueis finds Palpatine he's ambitious, intelligent, and dark, but he wasn't a darksider. He was a youth struggling to cast off the shackles of his father and family. He was almost desperate and vulnerable which of course let Plagueis easily manipulate him.
It was probably when Palpatine murdered his family that he became a darksider.

So Palpatine was tricked into becoming a darksider?

No. More like...seduced. He came willingly because he liked what he saw.

If I'm understanding you correctly, the Dark Side was Palpatine's soulmate.

Not quite how I'd put it.

Haha, what a great way to phrase that. It pretty much was, but that doesn't mean he was always a darksider. I mean before all of this he never knew of it so how could he be one? Once Plagueis showed up and began whispering in his ear of all the things he could teach him and what not he fell in love...with the dark side. It was like love at first thought. xD

Him always being a darksider wasn't possible. He was destined for it of course, but before he knew of it he couldn't be a part of it. That's like being a Star Wars fan before you've even seen a movie or read a book. You have no knowledge of it so how could you be a fan?

I would have gotten the impression that Palpatine was aware of and a user of the Dark Side before meeting Plagueis, but was untrained (if it wasn't for that comment at the end of the novel).

Well going from the book he doesn't. Plagueis introduced him to it.

Palpatine from the get-go was a sociopathic, dark side worshipping bugger, but he always needed to be careful where to tread given his standing.

Plagueis just simply...pushed the right buttons to make Plaps finally go nuts and unleash everything.

Did Palpatine know that the Maladians were going to attack at the Canted Circle meeting?

I don't remember but I doubt it. Pretty sure he saved Plagueis' butt. If he knew that implies Sidious wanted Plagueis dead, but he still needed Plagueis' pull to arrange his ascension to chancellorship.

The attack resulted in Plagueis becoming a pawn of Sidious and Maul.

I don't have the book with me ATM, but wasn't the scene preceding the big bust from Palpatine's perspective? I remember him seeming genuinely surprised about the attack. But I could be wrong -- maybe he just said he was surprised or something.

The book makes Palpatine seem like a pawn of Plagueis until he makes a speech at the end revealing the truth.

Palpatine, and Sith in general, aren't the most honest of individuals.

But Palpatine was lying a lot in his speech at the end.
