The time is ticking -well, it always is, but still...- on the next 6.0+ quake for us here in SoCal; if it could happen during an Academy Awards broadcast, that'd be great. :p

A 7.9 earthquake struck northwest of Kathmandu today. Over 600 people are confirmed dead including a few on Mount Everest. The historic Dharahara Tower has almost completely collapsed and the ancient Durbar Square has been destroyed

This is genuinely heartbreaking to me. I have had an odd obsession with the Himalayas and mountaineering, and the whole community in Nepal is something I love and have always really wanted to visit. This is gutting. Seeing the damage to Kathmandu and the loss of life there is awful.

I was just at a talk by mountaineer Conrad Anker the other day actually. I asked him why anyone ever goes up the South route to Everest because of the avalanche danger on that side, and he said it terrifies him and he'd never go the southern route again... Eerie to have this terrible tragedy happen a few days later. There are still around 100 people trapped above the glacier who now have no idea how to get down. If you walk through that snowpack you could easily fall through a crevase.

Even more eerie, ESPN was going to air a special on the aftermath after the avalanche that killed 16 on Everest just a little over a year ago. Not surprisingly, they pulled the airings of it.

    Edit: GDI ESPN....

We picked it up here on equipment in Australia. Small, but it's there.

Yeah, the shallow depth means a lot of damage potential...

Been seeing footage on the news. BBC says at least 21 dead. Both the village of Pescara del Tronto and the town of Amatrice have been reduced to rubble.

Still waiting for "The Big One" in California that they keep talking about.

Meanwhile, my heart goes out to all of those in Italy and Myanmar.

Anyone else in New England feeling small tremors of something? It's been going on slightly shaking and vibrating everything here nonstop for at least 15 minutes, sometimes a little stronger but not stopping, not a truck or a train, it's keeping me from sleeping. I can feel it upstairs and downstairs in the house. Could it just be a local small quake that my suburban neighborhood can noticeably feel but maybe not much else and doesn't merit an earthquake? I don't exactly have experience here with earthquakes or tremors, but this is something.

Non stop for 15 minutes sounds like something other than an earthquake.
