JCC The OFFICIAL Earthquake Thread

First time I've been nervous in... damn, probably at least 10 years, if not since Northridge. It was really close. Actually knocked some things off shelves. I felt a preshock about an hour earlier and a few aftershocks.

 

Was her reaction at all like this?:

That was at least the 6th aftershock I felt.

 

It figures that all these quakes are happening shortly after my never-experienced-an-earthquake self moved away from Long Beach.

 

Could all these quakes be a prelude to the Big One?

 

My mother, aunt & brother are convinced of that.

 

It's quite the mind **** of course... obviously after such an event* I'd be cognizant of the ills, damage, etc that would follow; wouldn't be joyful (DUH) about that. But during the actual shaking? I'd be grinning like a mad man, with an adrenaline rush that would last for many minutes.



*Assuming I'd survive the quake.

 

That's a hypothetical that's been around for 50 years. And it's supposed to come from the San Andreas Fault. The faultline that caused the earthquakes in Orange County is not San Andreas.

In other words, no.

8.2 Chile. Big one, Tsunami warning around South America, people heading for the hills...

 

I thought that was an April Fools joke until I went to USGS.

Well, at least Chile is as capable as any country of weathering 8.0+ quakes, as they've demonstrated fairly recently.

 

Right? I mean there's currently no reported serious injuries or deaths? I'd say that's a win.

 

I mean, the last major one killed hundreds of people, but if it had been a less-prepared country (see: Haiti, where hundreds of thousands died in a 7.0), it would've been a lot worse.

 

We'll see how bad the situation is when the impending tsunami hits. Terrible.

NBC is reporting 5 dead from the quake.

The difference is amazing but of course Hati was as about the least prepared country in the world.

Edit: just checked the news and experts are expecting a large quake? Yikes

 

If you're in southern Mexico you had a 6.4 quake today.
