What began as a quest for truth has become a struggle for survival for Luke Skywalker and his son, Ben. They have used the secrets of the Mindwalkers to transcend their own bodies and speak with the spirits of the fallen, risking their very lives in the process. They have faced a team of Sith assassins and beaten the odds to destroy them. And now the death squad?s sole survivor, Sith apprentice Vestara Khai, has summoned an entire fleet of Sith frigates to engage the embattled father and son. But the dark warriors come bearing a surprising proposition that will bring Jedi and Sith together in an unprecedented alliance against an evil more ancient and alien than they can imagine.

While the Skywalkers and their Sith allies set off on their joint mission into the treacherous web of black holes that is the Maw, Han and Leia Solo risk arrest and worse to aid the Jedi imprisoned back on Coruscant. Tyrannical Chief of State Natasi Daala has issued orders that will open a permanent schism between her government and the Jedi Order?a schism that could turn all Jedi into renegades and wanted criminals.

But it is in the depths of the Maw that the future of the galaxy will be decided. For there the Skywalkers and their Sith allies will engage a true monster in battle, and Luke will come face-to-face with a staggering truth

I don't like the colors on the book. The characters look sick.

384 pages... is that longer than the other books in the series so far. I know they said they were going back and adding some plot stuff to the series (which hopefully isn't just filler).

Longer, definitely. I find myself being more and more interested in the Daala plotline, actually. Abeloth best come through as a the Big Baddie!

Hey guys, remember when I had my hypothesis that they were setting up the novels in 3 three-part trilogies -- so this would be the middle portion of Empire Strikes Back and that Backlash was seemingly slow because there'd be a ton of stuff happening in Allies and then EVEN MORE in Vortex...

    Yeah...

"Get ready for a bumpy ride..."

Also, I say this, much, much unexpected in the novel and Cartographer Junkies will be happy as The Treaty of Vontor takes center stage in this one...

I don't like how Luke has now gotten onto a third cover (out of 5 so far) for the series. OUTCAST, back of OMEN, and ALLIES.

It isn't even recognizable as Luke, and just looks bad, they shouldn't have included him there.

Gavar Khai is an interesting choice, though.

As for the actual plot, it sounds like it will be much more interesting than OUTCAST, OMEN, and BACKLASH.

I predict that Abeloth will thoroughly trash their fleet.

Wonder what Daala is up to on Coruscant, especially now that there's an even crazier Senator from Kuat who's out to replace her.

    That... would be telling?

But suffice it to say, I'm a bit pissed at the audio excerpt. >.<

Also: don't bother PMing me (this is for everyone, not fanboyskywalker), these are not the spoilers you are looking for. ;)

This, more than anything, is what I'm excited for. I can't wait to see more of Abeloth and her being a "true monster."

I think dp4m's comparison to the OT is very apt description of how FOTJ is going to proceed. Backlash ended probably just around the time of the Battle of Hoth. A decent sized battle between the good guy (Witches/Rebellion) against the bad guys (Nightsisters+Rancors/Empire), then it ends with things looking down for the heroes (Han and Leia limping around/Luke and Ben getting caught by the Sith fleet).

I think in Allies we're going to see a number of discussions between Ben and Vestara about the nature of the force through their eyes with Luke guiding them into their own choices.

I, too, think that this is an excellent comparison. I just hope Ms. Golden is up to the task.

Good to see a book over 330 pages, but I'm worried that most of it will be filler. The plot sounds average and the audio clip was disappointing, so I'm not going in with high hopes. But maybe it'll be good. Who knows. Hopefully Golden can step up and prove she's got the chops for good storytelling in SW, as Omen just felt like Outcast's younger brother.

Really looking forward to this one. I've managed to hold off picking up Abyss or Backlash so far focusing on studies, but that's all over soon and I get to plough through three without having to wait in between!

Even managed to stay (mostly) spoiler free for a change. But i'm mostly liking the direction they seem to be taking the series in.

I'm too cynical/pessimistic to expect much or have high hopes, though Omen wasn't horrible, just wasn't that great either, but I will honestly say that the Allies preview at the end of Backlash had me more excited than most of Backlash did mainly because Luke and Ben were finally off Dathomir. Half of Abyss turned out better than I expected, so maybe Allies will too, but I try not to get my hopes up too high.

Haven't listened to the audio excerpt yet, and not sure I want to, based on what others have said. Now just have to be careful not to read too many spoilers over the next few weeks.

    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Treaty_of_Vontor

Essentially, it's the treaty that forced the Klatoonians, Vodrans, and Nikto into "eternal" slavery with the Hutts, giving the Hutt kadijics three useful sources of labor. The treaty was critical for the Hutt success over Xim the Despot, legendary warlord of the Tion Hegemony, at the Third Battle of Vontor, where the Klatoonians, Vodrans, and Nikto helped the Hutts overcome Xim's droid army and enslave Xim. Im looking forward to this novel. It sounds like it will be better than Outcast/Backlash as both were, in my opinion, total garbage.

Crazy fan theory; the various hordes of the cluster entered eternal servitude with the Hutts because they were afraid of Abeloth?

Large crazy fan theory; the reason there are so many mind trick-proof creatures in Hutt Space is due to Abeloth? Or their survival is due to their resistance?

Does everyone else just ignore 'GrandMasterKatarn' full blown hate of Aaron Allston, or are we allowed to pay out authors when ever we feel like it, and for whatever reason?
