Is that actually a substantial enough phonetic difference to quibble over?

 

Funny, I always pronounced it like Lucas did, and when people started speculating on "which pronunciation Lucas would use" when Episode I scripts started leaking, I was baffled as to what other pronunciation they might be talking about.

 

I don't speak Cantonese, but according to the Mandarin Chinese, the closest pronunciation of "Tsui" can be found in the word "tsunami"

 

I said it as Sue-e too, until I once saw Ostrander say Choy.

 

Well, a Cantonese friend of mine says it's "zooy", as in the case of "Tsim Sha Tsui", a famous place in Hong Kong.

 

Well, I created the character, and he has always been "Choy Choy" (rhymes with "joy joy") to me. I based the "choy" pronunciation for "Tsui" after hearing director Tsui Hark's name pronounced that way. Whether or not it's correct Mandarin or Cantonese pronunciation of the word "tsui" is rather beside the point, since this is Star Wars.

Imagine that the name is based on two Aleenas words which sound the same but which have different meanings, and that these different meanings are indicated by the different spellings with which the words in Basic are transliterated into English.

and English is called Basic right in the SW universe & spoken by about 90% of sentient beings ?

 

How about "Kuat". I always say "kuwait". I don't think that's right...

 

I always read it as "koo-aht, almost like squat. But what do I know, I'm just a silly Texan.

From an earlier one: I've always pronounced Ulic like "Ulysses".

Here's one: Saleucami, I vaguely rememeber not particularly caring for the way Obi-Wan said it in ROTS.

I don't understand why anyone would continue to debate the pronunciation of the name of a character after the creator of said character has already put the matter to rest.

The way Kenobi says it in the movie is pronounced differently to fans, who in turn pronounces his acting voice differently to his native accent. ah never mind

 

Kuat in my country's language means ' strong' but its pronounced as ' Coo-utt '.

 

I've been saying it "Koo - at" and "Koo - wati."

Hell, I mispronounce everything. If I want to pronounce "Exar Kun" as "Exar K-uhn," I darn straight will!

 

I think I probably pronounce everything oddly. I say Jack-in, Jay-anna, Exar Kun (as in gun).

 

Jay-anna??? Me too!!! I heard someone say it that way years before I started reading novels and never lost the habit.

 

haha that's so funny. Yeah I always pronounce them weirdly in my head, and then when I go to say a word or name, I stumble over it, realizing I have no idea how to pronounce it. Do you ever do the thing where you read the word, but you don't really read it? I do that all the time.

another funny one for me is "Alema Rar" i always like to say it like "RAWRRR!"

Yep me too. When I try to discuss something with someone, I usually say the same word with 3 different pronunciations, just to make sure that we understand each other.

I say it Koo-ot and Koo-oti rhymes with too-hot and too-hottie.
