The Official JCC Game of the Year 2009 Thread [Nominations CLOSED]

Now that the year is drawing to a close, it's time to start thinking about your nominations for the JCC's official Game of the Year 2009!

Here's how it works:

1) There are eight categories. Six for each of the big platforms, one for Best New Game, and one for Overall Game of the Year.

2) Post THREE nominations for each category. You don't need to fill each category, so skip the platforms you don't own/use.

3) Please confine your nominations to one post. This makes it easier for everyone (and me) to follow. Apart from that, this thread can be used for general GOTY discussion.

4) You may PM your nominations to me if you'd prefer not to post them.

5) The cut off date for nominations is the end of 31 December 2009 (PST).

6) You may change your nomination before the cut off date. PM me to make the change.

7) You may nominate games for platforms not listed here (PS2, iPhone etc). If I get more than five game nominations for a platform not listed here, I'll create a category for it in the final vote.

8) Please do not use multiple usernames/socks to post nominations. I'll be keeping an eye out!

Once the nominations close, I'll post the top five nominations for each category. We'll then hold a secret vote (via PM) to decide the winners.

A note on downloadable console games: downloadable games may be included in your nominations for each platform. They must be new or updated games released in 2009. Re-released and back catalogue games are not eligible.

*I played these 3 games on PS3, but they are multiplatform so I'm assuming it is OK for me to put them in the 360 category instead?

 

Ideally you should only fill a platform category if you've played that platform's versions, since there can be slight differences.

 

PlayStation 3, PSP, DS, Wii - Abstained due to not owning either of them. Ihaven't played any decent PC game in ages.

Xbox 360:

3) Modern Warfare 2 (and only due to the shock value of some campaign scenes, otherwise I wouldn't even list it here).

Yeah, my choices are extremely limited but so have been my purchasing options throughout this wretched, recession laden year.

Everything else was merely okay, overhyped, or badly ported. MW2 as a PC nomination? How cynical. Borderlands sure looked fun, but it could have been much more if it wasn't for the obvious limitations of the XBox. Mirror's Edge (09 PC release, if it counts), FEAR2, Street Fighter IV & Prototype had too many flaws. Granted, I missed a few big titles, especially recent ones (Dragon Age might be good, but I don't care), but ... there's a reason I didn't get them.

Therefore:

I can see a trend here and it's one I hope others and websites/publications pick up on: that the Dark Knight's latest video game outing is the sweetest thing that has come out this year.

I bought two 2009 games this year. Lord of the Rings Conquest and TFU for PC. I own no consoles and only play on the PC. Conquest was a great for a drooling LOTR fanboy (read: myself) but did not have a massive amount of lasting appeal and was underwhelming compared to its predecessor of 3.5 years, BFII. I am utterly enthralled by TFU and have been playing it whenever I can since its belated PC release. The top-notch cinematics and fun levels (USE makes it a long enough experience to not be finished too quickly, as Republic Commando was). 1st playthrough on Apprentice, 2nd on Sith Warrior and now I'm having fun with Sith Lord. As I have played I've found that the targeting system gets easier with time and the use of the mouse to look around makes grabbing certain objects possible with ease and accuracy. I enjoy the good range of combos and the cool factor of the Force just never diminishes. I get a kick out of playing the levels in a myriad of costumes (Jedi Luke!) and the story levels present enough enemies to make it a novel experience every time as I select alternate ways to dispatch from the impressive arsenal of powers. Furthermore, I enjoy trying to push the assorted abilities and not just spam repulse on the bosses: pulling of an Aerial slam on a Shadow Guard is soooo satisfying.

Thus, yes, I am serious.

 

Very well then, I guess we can all agree to disagree about the merits or flaws of TFU. Though when you think about it, if the game was originally released last year I don't think it should qualify for this list, just like (as much as I would've loved to vote for it here) Fallout 3's recent repackaging with all DL content a few months back.

 

Abstain for PS3, Wii, PC, PSP, since I don't own a PS3 or Wii, and I haven't played any outstanding games for the PSP or PC this year. I'm basically here to vote for Scribblenauts.
