No wonder....

 

Trek 09 is bad and shows that JJ does not get Star Trek at all. It was very well casted though - JJ seems to be very, very good at casting.

TFA is much better than Trek 09... and not just because JJ gets Star Wars better. The action scenes in TFA are actually understandable..... in Trek 09 half the action is a complete mess that is impossible to follow.

 

I'm not sure how to take it.

If I could put an unflattering adjective between "your" and "complaints" then I'd gladly take ownership.

 

I'll get over the blatant snub eventually, I guess.

Having your character witness an atrocity and say 'no, I'm not going to follow that order', is far more powerful than having an intellectual argument with some guy while on a long walk... which is what you're wanting to see.

except that JJ doesnt get Star Wars. He gets it on an aesthetic level. but he doesnt get it. and i agree he didnt get Star Trek. and somehow, Trek 09 still turned out the better picture. like i said its not a great film by any means, but its still his best picture.

 

Oh dear lord Trek 09 is not a better film than TFA. Not by a long shot. I can't agree with that. TFA has many flaws but it is not nearly as flimsy at Trek 09. These are his two best movies though.
Oddly enough though, they both have weird shots of ridiculous cosmic distances where Spock observes the death of Vulcan while stranded on Hoth and Han and Finn observe the death of the New Republic/Hosnian Prime while at the pirates' castle.

JJ cheated the hell out of those shots.

I think JJ gets Star Wars - he's just not a particularly deep story teller. He's very good at casting and setting up interesting mystery boxes. Luckily we don't have to rely on him to give us the answers... as I don't think he's great at that.

I just disagree about Trek 09.... just the vastly superior filming of the action sequences in TFA is enough to put it over the top for me. I can not stand the action sequences where you can't tell what's going on in Trek 09.

Well, YOU don't think he gets it, which is fair enough, but man, MANY of us think he got it rather well. I hadn't felt that pimped after seeing a Star Wars movie since the 80's.

 

so Finn is all cut up about his stormtrooper pal who got killed etc. then an hour or so later he's blasting dozens of 'em to oblivion and whooping and cheering about it . And these are his 'brothers-in-arms' he's spent pretty much his whole life with them right ?

but I guess like Rey's Jedi abilities : he does what the script requires .
